विदितलोकापवादवृत्तांतश्च भगवान् सर्वयदुसैन्यपरिवारपरिवृतः प्रसेनाश्वपदवीमनुससार
The Blessed Lord, aware of the rumors spreading among the people, set out along with all the Yadu army to follow the trail of Prasena's horse.
ददर्श चाश्वसमवेतं प्रसेनं सिंहेन विनिहतम्
He saw Prasena, together with his horse, slain by a lion.
अखिलजनमध्ये सिंहपददर्शनकृतपरिशुद्धः सिंहपदमनुससार
Having been cleared of suspicion before all people by the sight of the lion's tracks, he followed the lion's trail.
ऋक्षपतिनिहतं च सिंहमप्यल्पे भूमिभागे दृष्ट्वा ततश्च तद्र त्नगौरवादृक्षस्यापि पदान्यनुययौ
Then, seeing the lion killed by the lord of the bears in a small patch of ground, and out of regard for the jewel, he followed the tracks of the bear as well.
गिरितटे च सकलमेव तद्यदुसैन्यमवस्थाप्य तत्पदानुसारी ऋक्षबिलं प्रविवेश
On a mountain slope, leaving the entire Yadu army stationed there, he followed those tracks and entered the bear's cave.
अन्तः प्रविष्टश्च धात्र्! याः सुकुमारकमुल्लालयन्त्या वाणीं शुश्राव
And, O Sustainer, having entered within, he heard the words of a nurse soothing little Sukumāra.
अत्र श्लोकः। सिंहः प्रसेनमवधीत्सिंहो जाम्बवता हतः । सुकुमारकमा रोदीस्तव ह्येष स्यमंतकः
Here is a verse: 'The lion killed Prasena; the lion was slain by Jāmbavat; do not weep, Sukumāra, for this is your Syamantaka.'
इत्याकर्ण्योपलब्धस्यमंतकॐतःप्रविष्टः कुमारक्रीडनकीकृतं च धात्र्! या हस्ते तेजोभिर्जाज्वल्यमानं स्यमंतकं ददर्श
Hearing this, Krishna entered and saw the Syamantaka, made into a plaything for the boy, shining with radiance in the nurse's hand.
तं च स्यमंतकाभिलषितचक्षुषमपूर्वपुरुषमागतं समवेक्ष्य धात्री त्राहित्राहीति व्याजहार
Seeing the unprecedented man who had come, with eyes desiring the Syamantaka, the nurse cried out, 'Help! Help!'
तदार्त्तरवश्रवणानंतरं चामर्षपूर्णहृदयः स जांबवानाजगाम
Immediately upon hearing her distressed cry, Jāmbavat, his heart filled with anger, arrived.
तयोश्च परस्परमुद्धतामर्षयोर्युद्धमेकविंशतिदिनान्यभवत्
And between the two, both inflamed with mutual wrath, a battle lasted for twenty-one days.
ते च यदुसैनिकास्तत्र सप्ताष्टादिनानि तन्निष्क्रांतिमुदीक्षमाणास्तस्थुः
Meanwhile, the Yadu warriors waited there for seven or eight days, watching for his return.
अनिष्क्रमणे च मधुरिपुरसाववश्यमत्र बिलेऽत्यंतं नाशमवाप्तो भविष्यत्यन्यथा तस्य जीवतः कथमेतावंति दिनानि शत्रुजये व्याक्षेपो भविष्यतीति कृताध्यवसाया द्वारकामागम्य हतः कृष्ण इति कथयामासुः
When Krishna did not emerge, they concluded, 'Surely the slayer of Madhu has perished in this cave; otherwise, how could so many days pass without him returning victorious over the enemy?' So, having resolved thus, they went to Dvārakā and reported that Krishna had been killed.
तद्बांधवाश्च तत्कालोचितमखिलमुत्तरक्रियाकलापं चक्रुः
And his relatives performed all the appropriate final rites as was fitting at that time.
ततश्चास्य युद्ध्यमानस्यातिश्रद्धादत्तविशिष्टोपपात्रयुक्तान्नतोयादिना श्रीकृष्णस्य बलप्राणपुष्टिरभूत्
Meanwhile, for Krishna, who was fighting, nourishment of food and drink, specially prepared with utmost devotion, restored his strength and life-force.
इतरस्यानुदिनमतिगुरुपुरुषभेद्यमानस्य अतिनिष्ठुरप्रहारपातपीडिताखिलावयवस्य निराहारतया बलहानिरभूत्
But for the other, whose body was daily battered by the mighty blows of a powerful man, and whose limbs were afflicted by extremely harsh strikes, the lack of food caused a loss of strength.
निर्जितश्च भगवता जांबवान्प्रणिपत्य व्याजहार
And having been defeated by the Blessed Lord, Jāmbavān bowed down and spoke.
सुरासुरगंधर्वयक्षराक्षसादिभिरप्यखिलैर्भवान्न जेतुं शक्यः किमुतावनिगोचरैरल्पवीर्यैर्नरैर्नरावयवभूतैश्च तिर्यग्योन्यनुसृतिभिः किं पुनरस्मद्विधैरवश्यं भवताऽस्मत्स्वामिना रामेणेव नारायणस्य सकलजगत्परायणस्यांश्नो भगवता भवितव्यमित्युक्तस्तस्मै भगवानखिलावनिभारावतरणार्थमवतरणमाचचक्षे
Even all the gods, asuras, gandharvas, yakṣas, rākṣasas, and others together are unable to conquer you—how much less, then, could mere mortals of little strength, or those born as animals, or beings composed of human elements? What to say of people like us? Surely, you, our master, must be none other than Rāma himself, a portion of Nārāyaṇa, the refuge of all the worlds. Thus addressed, the Blessed Lord revealed to him his descent for the removal of the burden of the earth.
प्रीत्यभिव्यंजितकरतलस्पर्शनेन चैनमपगतयुद्धखेदं चकार
And with a touch of his hand, expressing affection, he relieved him of the fatigue of battle.
स च प्रणिपत्य पुनरप्येनं प्रसाद्य जांबवतीं नाम कन्यां गृहागतायार्घ्यभूतां ग्राहयामास
Then, bowing down again and having propitiated him, Jāmbavān offered him his daughter Jāmbavatī, who had come home and was worthy of being honored.
स्यमंतकमणिरत्नमपि प्रणिपत्य तस्मै प्रददौ
He also, bowing down, gave him the precious Syamantaka jewel.
अच्युतोप्यतिप्रणतात्तस्मादग्राह्यमपि तन्मणिरत्नमात्मसंशोधनाय जग्राह
And Acyuta, though the jewel was not to be accepted from one so deeply submissive, took it for the sake of clearing himself.
सह जांबवत्या स द्वारकामाजगाम
Together with Jāmbavatī, he went to Dvārakā.
भगवदागमनोद्भूतहर्षोत्कर्षस्य द्वारकावासिजनस्य कृष्णावलोकनात्तत्क्षणमेवातिपरिणतवयसोपि नवयौवनमिवाभवत्
At the sight of Kṛṣṇa, the people of Dvārakā, overwhelmed with joy at the Lord's arrival, instantly appeared as if in fresh youth, though they were of advanced age.
दिष्ट्यादिष्ट्येति सकलयादवाः स्त्रियश्च सभाजयामासुः
All the Yādavas and the women honored him, saying, 'By fortune, by fortune!'
भगवानपि यथानुभूतमश्षॐ यादवसमाजे यथावदाचचक्षे
And the Blessed Lord recounted in the Yādava assembly all that had happened, just as he had experienced it.
स्यमंतकं च सत्राजिताय दत्त्वा मिथ्याभिशस्तिपरिशुद्धिमवाप
He returned the Syamantaka jewel to Satrājit and was cleared of the false accusation.
जांबवतीं चांतःपुरे निवेशयामास
He settled Jāmbavatī in the inner quarters.
सत्राजितोपि मयास्याभूतमलिनमारोपितमिति जातसंत्रासात्स्वसुतां सत्यभामां भगवते भार्यार्थं ददौ
And Satrājit, frightened because he had falsely accused him, gave his daughter Satyabhāmā to the Blessed Lord as a wife.
तां चाक्रूरकृतवर्मशतधन्वप्रमुखा यादवाः प्राग्वरयाम्बभूवुः
But before that, Akrūra, Kṛtavarman, Śatadhanvan, and the other Yādavas had sought her hand.
