तस्यापि रुक्मकवचस्ततः परवृत् ॥ ४,१२.
His son was Rukmakavaca, and then Paravṛt.
तस्य परावृतो रुक्मेषुपृथुज्यामघवलितहरितसंज्ञास्तस्य पञ्चात्मजा बभूवुः ॥ ४,१२.
Parāvṛta's sons were Rukmeṣu, Pṛthujyāma, Aghavālita, and Harita; he had five sons.
तस्माद्यापि ज्यामघस्य श्लोको गीयते ॥ ४,१२.
Even now, the verse about Jyāmagha is sung.
भार्यावश्यास्तु ये केचिद्भविष्यन्त्यथ वा मृताः । तेषां तु ज्यामघः श्रेष्ठः शैव्यापतिरभून्नृपः ॥ ४,१२.
Of all those who have wives, whether living or deceased, Jyāmagha was the best; he was the king, husband of Śaivyā.
अपुत्रा तस्य सा पत्नी शैव्या नाम तथाप्यसौ । अपत्यकामोऽपि भयान्नान्यां भार्यामविन्दत ॥ ४,१२.
His wife, named Śaivyā, was childless; yet, although he desired offspring, out of fear he did not take another wife.
स त्वेकदा प्रभूतरथतुरगगजसंमर्दातिदारुणे महाहवे युद्ध्यमानःच सकलमेवारिचक्रमजयत् ॥ ४,१२.
Once, in a fierce great battle with a crush of many chariots, horses, and elephants, he fought and conquered all his enemies.
तच्चारिचक्रमपास्तपुत्रकलत्रबन्धुबलकोशं स्वमधिष्ठानं परित्यज्य दिशः प्रतिविद्रुतम् ॥ ४,१२.
Those enemies, abandoning their sons, wives, relatives, troops, and wealth, fled from their own territory in all directions.
तस्मिंश्च विद्रुतेतित्रासलोलायतलोचनयुगलं त्राहित्राहि मां तातांब भ्रतरित्याकुलविलापविधुरं स राजकन्यारत्नमद्राक्षीत् ॥ ४,१२.
As they fled, the king saw a royal maiden, her wide eyes trembling with fear, crying out in distress, 'Save me, save me, father, mother, brother!'
तद्दर्शनाच्च तस्यामनुरागनुगतान्तरात्मा स नृपोऽचिन्तयत् ॥ ४,१२.
Upon seeing her, the king's heart was filled with affection for her.
साध्विदं ममापत्यरहितस्य वन्ध्याभर्तुः सांप्रतं विधिनापत्यकारणं कन्यारत्नमुपपादितम् ॥ ४,१२.
He thought, 'Indeed, for me, who am childless and whose wife is barren, fate has now brought this jewel of a maiden as the cause of offspring.'
तदेतत्समुद्वहामीति ॥ ४,१२.
'Therefore, I shall marry her.'
अथ वैनां स्यन्दनमारोप्य स्वमधिष्ठानं नयामि ॥ ४,१२.
Then, placing her upon his chariot, he brought her to his own abode.
तयैव देव्याशैव्ययाहमनुज्ञातःसमुद्वहामीति ॥ ४,१२.
With the consent of Queen Śaivyā, he married her.
अथैनां रथमारोप्य स्वनगरमगच्छत् ॥ ४,१२.
Then, placing her upon the chariot, he went to his own city.
विजयिनं च राजानमशेषपौरभृत्वयरिजनामात्यसमेता शैव्या द्रष्टुमधिष्ठनद्वारमागता ॥ ४,१२.
The victorious king, accompanied by all the citizens, relatives, army, and ministers, was approached at the palace gate by Shaivya, who had come to see him.
सा चावलोक्य राज्ञः सव्यपार्शववर्त्तिनीं कन्यामीषदुद्भूतामर्षस्फुरदधरपल्लवा राजानमवोचत् ॥ ४,१२.
And seeing a maiden standing at the king’s left side, her lips trembling slightly with the stirrings of indignation, Shaivya spoke to the king.
अतिचपलचित्तात्र स्यन्दने केयमारोपितेति ॥ ४,१२.
Who is this girl, so fickle-minded, seated here in the chariot?
असावप्यनालोचितोत्तरवचनोतिभयात्तामाह स्नुषा ममेयमिति ॥ ४,१२.
Out of fear of being questioned further and without considering his reply, he said to her, 'She is my daughter-in-law.'
अथैनं शैव्योवाच ॥ ४,१२.
Then Shaivya said to him:
नाहं प्रसूता पुत्रेण नान्या पत्न्यभवत्तव । स्नुषासंबन्धता ह्योषा कतमेन सुतेन ते ॥ ४,१२.
I have not borne a son for you, nor have you had another wife; so by which son of yours does this woman have the relation of daughter-in-law?
श्रीपराशर उवाच इत्यात्मेर्ष्याकोपकलुषितवचनमुषितविवेको भयाद्दुरुक्तापरिहारार्थमिदमवनीपतिराह ॥ ४,१२.
Śrī Parāśara said: Thus, with words tainted by jealousy and anger, and having lost his discernment out of fear and wishing to avoid harsh speech, the king replied as follows:
यस्ते जनिष्यत्यात्मजस्तस्येयमनागतस्यैव भार्या निरूपितेत्याकर्ण्योद्भूतमृदुहासा तथेत्याह ॥ ४,१२.
She is appointed as the wife of that son of yours who is yet to be born—hearing this, Shaivya, with a gentle smile arising, replied, 'So be it.'
प्रविवेश च राज्ञा सहाधिष्ठानम् ॥ ४,१२.
And she entered the palace together with the king.
अनन्तरं चातिशुद्धलग्नहोरांशकावयवोक्तकृतपुत्रजन्मलाभगुणाद्वयसः परिणाममुपगतापि शैव्या स्वल्पैरेवाहोभिर्गर्भमवाप ॥ ४,१२.
Soon after, due to the auspiciousness of the pure conjunction of the moment, the hour, and the divisions of time, Shaivya conceived with only a few days passing.
कालेन च कुमारमजीजनत् ॥ ४,१२.
In due course, she gave birth to a son.
तस्य च विदर्भ इति पिता नाम चक्रे ॥ ४,१२.
And his father named him Vidarbha.
स च तां स्नुषामुपयेमे ॥ ४,१२.
He married that daughter-in-law.
तस्यां चासौक्रथकैशिकसंज्ञौ पुत्रावजनयत् ॥ ४,१२.
And from her, he begot two sons named Kratha and Kaishika.
पुनश्च तृतीयं रोमपादसंज्ञं पुत्रमजीजनद्यो नारदादवाप्तज्ञानवान्भविष्यतीति ॥ ४,१२.
Again, she bore a third son named Romapada, who would become one endowed with knowledge obtained from Narada.
रोमपादाद्बभ्रुः बभ्रोर्धृतिर्ः धृतेः कैशिकः कैशिकस्यापि चेदिः पुत्रोऽभवत्यस्य संततौ चैद्या भूपालाः ॥ ४,१२.
From Romapada came Babhru; from Babhru, Dhriti; from Dhriti, Kaishika; and from Kaishika, Cedi was born. In his line were the kings of Cedi.
