अनुदिनञ्च उपभोगतश्व कामानतीव रम्यान् मेने ।। ४-१०-
And day by day, through enjoyment, he considered the pleasures to be exceedingly delightful.
न जातु कामः कामानामुपभोगेन शाम्यति । हविषा कृष्णवर्त्मेव भूय एवाभिवर्द्धते ।। ४-१०-
Desire is never satisfied by the enjoyment of objects; like fire fed with ghee, it only grows all the more.
यत् पृथिव्यां व्रीहियवं हिरण्यं पशवः स्त्रियः । एकस्यापि न पर्य्याप्तं तदित्यतितृषं त्यजेत् ।। ४-१०-
Even all the rice, barley, gold, cattle, and women on earth are not enough for a single man; therefore, one should abandon excessive craving.
यदा न कुरुते भावं सर्व्वभूतेषु पापकम् । समदृष्टेस्तदा पुसः सर्व्वा एव सुखा दिशः ।। ४-१०-
When a person does not harbor evil intent toward any being, and sees all with equal vision, then all directions become pleasant for him.
या दुस्त्यजा दुर्म्मतिभिर्या न जीर्य्यति जीर्य्यतः । तां तृष्णां सन्त्यजन् प्राज्ञः सुखेनैवाभिपूर्य्यते ।। ४-१०-
That craving, which is hard to give up by those of misguided mind, and does not age even as the body ages—by abandoning that, the wise one is easily fulfilled.
जीर्य्यन्ति जीर्य्यतः केशा दन्ता जीर्य्यन्ति जीर्य्यतः । धनाशा जीविताशा च जीर्य्यतोऽपि न जीर्य्यति ।। ४-१०-
As a person ages, his hair and teeth grow old, but the desire for wealth and life does not grow old, even as he does.
पूर्णां वर्षसहस्त्रं मे विषयासक्तचेतसः । तथाप्यनुदिनं तृष्णा ममैतेष्वेव जायते ।। ४-१०-
Even after a full thousand years, with my mind attached to pleasures, still, day by day, my craving for these only increases.
तस्मदितामहं त्यक्त्वा ब्रह्मण्याधाय मानसम् । निर्द्रन्द्रो निर्म्ममो भूत्वा चरिष्यामि मृगैः सह ।। ४-१०-
Therefore, abandoning this craving, fixing my mind on the divine, becoming free from attachment and possessiveness, I will wander with the deer.
पूरोः सकाशादादाय जरां दत्त्वा च यौवनम् । राज्येऽभिषिच्य पूरुञ्च प्रययौ तपसे वनम् ।। ४-१०-
Taking old age from Puru and giving him youth, he anointed Puru as king and departed to the forest for penance.
दिशि दक्षिणपूर्व्वंस्यां तुर्व्वसुं प्रत्यथादिशत् । प्रतीच्याञ्च तथा द्रु ह्यु दक्षिणापथतो यदुम् ।। ४-१०-
He assigned Turvasa to the southeastern direction, Druhyu to the western, and Yadu to the southern path.
उदीच्याञ्च तथैवानुं कृत्वा मणडलिनो नृपान् । सर्व्वपृथ्वीपतिं पूरु सोऽभिषिच्य वनं ययौ ।। ४-१०-
He likewise assigned Anu to the northern direction, making them rulers of regions, and after anointing Puru as lord of all the earth, he went to the forest.
श्रीपराशर उवाच क्रोष्टोस्तु यदुपुत्रस्यात्मजो ध्वजिनीवान् ॥ ४,१२.
Śrī Parāśara said: Kroṣṭu, the son of Yadu, had a son named Dhvajinīvan.
ततश्च स्वातिः ततो रुशङ्कुः रुशङ्कोश्चित्ररथः ॥ ४,१२.
From him came Svāti; from Svāti, Ruśaṅku; from Ruśaṅku, Citraratha.
तत्तनयः शशिबिन्दुः चतुर्दशमहारत्नेशश्चक्रवर्त्यभवत् ॥ ४,१२.
His son was Śaśibindu, who became a universal monarch, lord of fourteen great treasures.
तस्य च शतसहस्रं पत्नी नामभवत् ॥ ४,१२.
He had a hundred thousand wives.
दशलक्षसंख्याश्च पुत्राः ॥ ४,१२.
And his sons numbered one hundred thousand.
तेषां च पृथुश्रवाः पृथुकर्मा पृथुकीर्तिः पृथुयशाः पृथुजयः पृथुदानः षट्पुत्राः प्रधानाः ॥ ४,१२.
Among them, Pṛthuśravāḥ, Pṛthukarmā, Pṛthukīrtiḥ, Pṛthuyaśāḥ, Pṛthujayaḥ, and Pṛthudānaḥ were the six principal sons.
पृथुश्रवसश्च पुत्रः पृथुतमः ॥ ४,१२.
Pṛthutamaḥ was the son of Pṛthuśravasa.
तस्मादुशना यो वाजिमेधानां शतमाजहार ॥ ४,१२.
From him came Uśanā, who performed a hundred horse sacrifices.
तस्य च शितपुर्नाम पुत्रोऽभवत् ॥ ४,१२.
His son was named Śitapūrṇa.
तस्यापि रुक्मकवचस्ततः परवृत् ॥ ४,१२.
His son was Rukmakavaca, and then Paravṛt.
तस्य परावृतो रुक्मेषुपृथुज्यामघवलितहरितसंज्ञास्तस्य पञ्चात्मजा बभूवुः ॥ ४,१२.
Parāvṛta's sons were Rukmeṣu, Pṛthujyāma, Aghavālita, and Harita; he had five sons.
तस्माद्यापि ज्यामघस्य श्लोको गीयते ॥ ४,१२.
Even now, the verse about Jyāmagha is sung.
भार्यावश्यास्तु ये केचिद्भविष्यन्त्यथ वा मृताः । तेषां तु ज्यामघः श्रेष्ठः शैव्यापतिरभून्नृपः ॥ ४,१२.
Of all those who have wives, whether living or deceased, Jyāmagha was the best; he was the king, husband of Śaivyā.
अपुत्रा तस्य सा पत्नी शैव्या नाम तथाप्यसौ । अपत्यकामोऽपि भयान्नान्यां भार्यामविन्दत ॥ ४,१२.
His wife, named Śaivyā, was childless; yet, although he desired offspring, out of fear he did not take another wife.
स त्वेकदा प्रभूतरथतुरगगजसंमर्दातिदारुणे महाहवे युद्ध्यमानःच सकलमेवारिचक्रमजयत् ॥ ४,१२.
Once, in a fierce great battle with a crush of many chariots, horses, and elephants, he fought and conquered all his enemies.
तच्चारिचक्रमपास्तपुत्रकलत्रबन्धुबलकोशं स्वमधिष्ठानं परित्यज्य दिशः प्रतिविद्रुतम् ॥ ४,१२.
Those enemies, abandoning their sons, wives, relatives, troops, and wealth, fled from their own territory in all directions.
तस्मिंश्च विद्रुतेतित्रासलोलायतलोचनयुगलं त्राहित्राहि मां तातांब भ्रतरित्याकुलविलापविधुरं स राजकन्यारत्नमद्राक्षीत् ॥ ४,१२.
As they fled, the king saw a royal maiden, her wide eyes trembling with fear, crying out in distress, 'Save me, save me, father, mother, brother!'
तद्दर्शनाच्च तस्यामनुरागनुगतान्तरात्मा स नृपोऽचिन्तयत् ॥ ४,१२.
Upon seeing her, the king's heart was filled with affection for her.
साध्विदं ममापत्यरहितस्य वन्ध्याभर्तुः सांप्रतं विधिनापत्यकारणं कन्यारत्नमुपपादितम् ॥ ४,१२.
He thought, 'Indeed, for me, who am childless and whose wife is barren, fate has now brought this jewel of a maiden as the cause of offspring.'
