Amāvasu had a son named Bhīma; Bhīma's son was Kāñcana, Kāñcana's son was Suhotra, and his son was Jahnu; seeing the entire sacrificial ground flooded by the waters of the Ganges, Jahnu, his eyes red with anger, through supreme concentration placed the sacrificial person within himself and drank up the Ganges completely.
Then the divine sages appeased him, and brought forth the Ganges as his daughter; Jahnu had a son named Sujahnū, whose son was Ajaka, then Balākāśva, then Kuśa; Kuśa's sons were Kuśāśva, Kuśanābha, Amūrtarayas, Āvasu, Aśvatāra.
Of them, Kuśāśva performed austerities, desiring, 'May I have a son equal to Indra'; seeing his severe penance, Indra himself, thinking, 'Let there be no other equal in strength to me,' entered him as his own son.
He became known as Gādhi, the Kauśika; Gādhi begot a daughter named Satyavatī, whom the Bhārgava Ṛcīka chose as his wife.
Gādhi, unwilling to give his daughter to the exceedingly aged and ascetic Brahmin, demanded as bride-price a thousand horses, dark-eared, with a single white spot, swift as the wind and the moon's radiance.
That sage, having obtained such a thousand horses from Varuṇa, gave them as the bride-price.
Then Ṛcīka married the maiden; for the sake of offspring, Ṛcīka prepared a sacrificial oblation for his wife, and, being pleased, prepared another oblation for her mother to obtain a kṣatriya son.
He said, 'This oblation is for you; the other is for your mother. Use them properly,' and then went to the forest.
At the time of use, her mother said to Satyavatī, 'Everyone desires that her own son be superior; the qualities of a daughter's son or brother are not so highly valued. Therefore, you should give me your oblation and use mine yourself.'
'For by my son, the entire earth must be protected.'
When she asked, 'How great is the strength and power of this Brahmin's son?' Satyavatī gave her own oblation to her mother.
Then, returning from the forest, the sage saw Satyavatī and said to her, 'O most sinful one! What is this improper act you have done? Your form appears exceedingly fierce; surely you have used the oblation intended for your mother. This is not proper.'
Indeed, I have established all valor and strength in your son’s conduct, and in your son’s conduct also I have placed the complete wealth of Brahmin qualities such as peace, knowledge, forbearance, and so on. If she acts contrary to this, then your son will possess the fierce, weapon-bearing, and destructive conduct of a Kshatriya; but if she desires tranquility, he will have the conduct of a Brahmin.
Hearing this, she immediately grasped his feet. Bowing down, she said to him: 'Revered one! I have done this out of ignorance; please show me your grace. May such a son not be born to me; let such a grandson be born instead.' Thus addressed, the sage also said, 'So be it.'
Afterwards, she gave birth to Jamadagni. His mother gave birth to Viśvāmitra. Satyavatī became the river called Kauśikī. Jamadagni, son of Reṇu of the Ikṣvāku lineage, married Reṇukā. From her, Jamadagni begot Paraśurāma, the destroyer of all Kshatriya power, who is a portion of the divine Nārāyaṇa, the teacher of all the worlds.

Then he obtained a horse named Kuvalaya, and thus he became widely known on this earth as Kuvalayāśva.
