तदाकर्ण्य राजा मां नग्नं देवी वीक्ष्यतीति न ययौ
Hearing this, the king thought, 'The queen will see me naked,' and so he did not go.
अथान्यमप्युरणकमादाय गंधर्वा ययुः
Then the Gandharvas took another drum and departed.
तस्याप्यपह्रियमाणस्याकर्ण्य शब्दमाकाशो! पुनरप्यनाथास्म्यहमभर्तृका कापुरुषा श्रयेत्यार्त्तराविणी बभूव
As that one too was being carried away, hearing the sound, O Akasha, she again cried out, 'I am helpless, without a husband, seeking shelter among the unmanly,' and her lament became even more anguished.
राजाप्यमर्षवशादंधकारमेतदिति खड्गमादाय दुष्टदुष्ट हतोसीति व्याहरन्नभ्यधावत्
The king, overcome by anger, thinking, 'This is darkness,' took up his sword and, shouting 'Wicked! Wicked! You are slain!' rushed forward.
तावच्च गंधर्वैरप्यतीवोज्ज्वला विद्युज्जनिता
Meanwhile, the Gandharvas shone exceedingly bright, like lightning.
तत्प्रभया चोर्वशी राजानमपगतांबरं दृष्ट्वापवृत्तसमया तत्क्षणादेवापक्रान्ता
By their radiance, Urvashi saw the king without his garments, and, realizing the time had passed, she instantly vanished.
परित्यज्य तावप्युरणकौ गंधर्वास्सुरलोकमुपगताः
Abandoning both drums, the Gandharvas went to the world of the gods.
राजापि च तौ मेषावादायातिहृष्टमनाः स्वशयनमायातो नोर्वशीं ददर्श
The king, taking those two lambs, returned to his bed with a heart full of joy, but did not see Urvashi.
तां चापश्यन् व्यपगतांबर एवोन्मत्तरूपो बभ्राम
He saw her, too, without garments, and wandered about in a state of madness.
कुरुक्षेत्रे चांभोजसरस्यन्याभिश्चतसृभिरप्सरोभिस्समवेतामुर्वशीं ददर्श
In Kurukshetra, at the lotus-filled lake, he saw Urvashi together with four other Apsaras.
ततश्चोन्मत्तरूपो जाये हे तिष्ठ मनसि घोरे तिष्ठ वचसि कपटिके तिष्ठेत्येवमनेकप्रकारं सूक्तमवोचत्
Then, in his madness, he spoke many kinds of verses: 'O wife, stay! Stay in your fierce mind! Stay in your deceitful speech! Stay!'
महाराजालमनेनाविवेकचेष्टितेन
The great king, with actions lacking discernment, was bewildered.
अंतर्वत्न्यहमब्दांते भवताऽत्रागंतव्यं कुमारस्ते भबिष्यति एकां च निशामहं त्वया सह वत्स्यामीत्युक्तः प्रहृष्टस्स्वपुरं जगाम
She said, 'At the end of the year, you must come to me in the inner chamber; your son will be born. And I will spend one night with you.' Thus addressed, he joyfully returned to his city.
तासां चाप्सरसामूर्वशी कथयामास
Urvashi spoke among the Apsaras.
अयं स पुरुषोत्कृष्टो येनाहमेतावंतं कालमनुरागाकृष्टमानसा सहोषितेति
'This is the distinguished man with whom, drawn by affection, I have lived for so long.'
एवमुक्तास्ताश्चाप्सरस ऊचुः
Thus addressed, the Apsaras replied.
साधुसाध्वस्य रूपमप्यनेन सहास्माकमपि सर्वकालमास्या भवेदिति
May this form of virtue and fearlessness always remain with us as well, together with him, at all times.
अब्दे च पूर्णे स राजा तत्राजगाम
When the year was complete, that king came there.
कुमारं चायुषमस्मै चोर्वशी ददौ
And Urvashi gave him a son and long life.
दत्त्वा चैकां निशां तेन राज्ञा सहोषित्वा पंच पुत्रोत्पत्तये गर्भमवाप
Having given one night, she stayed with the king, and by him she conceived for the birth of five sons.
उवाच चैनं राजानमस्मत्प्रीत्या महाराजाय सर्व एव गंधर्वा वरदास्संवृत्ताः व्रियतां च वर इति
And she said to the king, 'Out of affection for me, all the Gandharvas have become grantors of boons to you, O great king; let a boon be chosen.'
विजितसकलारातिरविहतेंद्रि यसामर्थ्यो बंधुमानमितबलकोशोऽस्मि नान्यदस्माकमुर्वशीसालोक्यात्प्राप्तव्यमस्तितदहमनया सहोर्वश्या कालं नेतुमभिलषामीत्युक्ते गंधर्वा राज्ञेऽग्निस्थालीं ददुः
Having conquered all enemies, with unobstructed senses and power, possessing relatives and immeasurable strength and wealth, I desire nothing else but to spend time with Urvashi in her world—when this was spoken, the Gandharvas gave the king a fire vessel.
ऊचुश्चैनमग्निमाम्नायानुसारी भूत्वा त्रिधा कृत्वोर्वशी सलोकतामनोरथमुद्दिश्य सम्यग्यजेथाः ततोऽवश्यमभिलषितमवाप्स्यतीत्युक्तस्तामग्निस्थालीमादाय जगाम
And they said to him, 'Following the injunctions of the scriptures, perform a proper sacrifice with this fire vessel, dividing it into three, with the desire for union with Urvashi in her world; then you will surely obtain what you desire.' Thus instructed, he took the fire vessel and departed.
अंतरटव्यामचिंतयत् अहो मेऽतीव मूढता किमहमकरवम्
In the midst of the forest he thought, 'Alas, how foolish I have been! What have I done?'
वह्निस्थाली मयैषानीता नोर्वशीति
'I have brought this fire vessel, not Urvashi.'
अथैनामटव्यामेवाग्निस्थालीं तत्याज स्वपुरं च जगाम
Then, in that very forest, he left the fire vessel and returned to his own city.
व्यतीतेऽर्द्धरात्रे विनिद्रश्चाचिंतयत्
When midnight had passed, sleepless, he reflected.
ममोर्वशीसालोक्यप्राप्त्यर्थमग्निस्थाली गंधर्वैर्दत्ता सा च मयाटव्यां परित्यक्ता
'The Gandharvas gave me the fire vessel for the sake of attaining Urvashi’s world, but I abandoned it in the forest.'
तदहं तत्र तदाहरणाय यास्यामीत्युत्थाय तत्राप्युपगतो नाग्निस्थालीमपश्यत्
'Therefore, I will go there to retrieve it.' Rising, he went there, but did not see the fire vessel.
शमीगर्भं चाश्वत्थमग्निस्थालीस्थाने दृष्ट्वाऽचिंतयत्
Instead of the fire vessel, he saw a Sami tree and a fig tree, and pondered.
