बृहस्पतिमिंदुं च तस्य कुमारस्यातिचारुतया साभिलाषौ दृष्ट्वा देवस्समुत्पन्नसंदेहास्तारां पप्रच्छुः
Bṛhaspati and Soma, seeing the extraordinary beauty of the boy, both desired him, and the gods, filled with doubt, questioned Tārā.
सत्यं कथयास्माकमिति सुभगे सोमस्याथ वा बृहस्पतेरयं पुत्र इति
Tell us the truth, O fortunate one: is this child Soma's or Bṛhaspati's son?
एवं तैरुक्ता सा तारा ह्रिया किंचिन्नोवाच
Thus questioned by them, Tārā, embarrassed, said nothing.
बहुशोप्यभिहिता यदाऽसौ देवेभ्यो नाचचक्षे ततस्स कुमारस्तां शप्तुमुद्यतः प्राह
Though repeatedly asked by the gods, she did not reveal it; then the boy, about to curse her, spoke.
दुष्टेंव कस्मान्मम तातं नाख्यासि
Why, wicked woman, do you not tell me who my father is?
अद्यैव ते व्यलीकलज्जावत्यास्तथा शास्तिमहं करोमि
Today, because of your unjust shame, I will punish you accordingly.
यथा च नैवमद्याप्यतिमंथरवचनाभविष्यसीति
So that you will never again speak with such excessive hesitation.
अथाह भगवान् पितामहः तं कुमारं सन्निवार्य स्वयमपृच्छत्तां ताराम्
Then the blessed Pitāmaha, restraining the boy, himself questioned Tārā.
कथय वत्से कस्यायमात्मजः सोमस्य वा बृहस्पतेर्वा इत्युक्ता लज्जमानाह सोमस्येति
Tell me, child, whose son is this—Soma's or Bṛhaspati's? Thus addressed, she, ashamed, replied: 'He is Soma's.'
ततः प्रस्फुरदुच्छ्वासितामलकपोलकांतिर्भगवानुडुपतिः कुमारमालिंग्य साधु साधु वत्स प्राज्ञोसीतिबुध इति तस्य च नाम चक्रे
Then, with his cheeks shining and breath quickened, the blessed Moon Lord embraced the boy, saying, 'Well done, well done, child, you are wise.' He named him Budha.
तदाख्यातमेवैतत् स च यथेलायामात्मजं पुरूरवसमुत्पादयामास
Thus, as was told, he begot a son, Pururavas, in Ilā.
पुरूरवास्त्वतिदानशीलोऽतियज्वातितेजस्वी यं सत्यवादिनमतिरूपस्विनं मनस्विनं मित्रावरुणशापान्मानुषे लोके मया वस्तव्यमिति कृतमतिरुर्वशी ददर्श
Pururavas was exceedingly generous, a great sacrificer, possessed of extraordinary brilliance, truthful, intelligent, handsome, and thoughtful; because of the curse of Mitra and Varuna, Urvashi resolved, 'I must dwell among humans,' and saw him.
दृष्टमात्रे च तस्मिन्नपहाय मानमश्षोमपास्य स्वर्गसुखाभिलाषं तन्मनस्का भूत्वा तमेवोपतस्थे
Upon seeing him, abandoning pride and the desire for heavenly pleasures, Urvashi became wholly absorbed in him and approached him.
सोऽपि च तामतिशयितसकललोकस्त्रीकांतिसौकुमार्यलावण्यग-तिविलासहासादिगुणामवलोक्य तदायत्तचित्तवृत्तिर्बभूव
He too, beholding her surpassing all women of the world in beauty, delicacy, charm, playfulness, laughter, and other qualities, became wholly captivated by her.
उभयमपि तन्मनस्कमनन्यदृष्टि परित्यक्तसमस्तान्यप्रयोजनमभूत्
Both became absorbed in each other, seeing nothing else, abandoning all other purposes.
राजा तु प्रागल्भ्यात्तामाह
The king, emboldened, spoke to her.
सुभ्रु त्वामहमभिकामोऽस्मि प्रसीदाऽनुरागमुद्वहेत्युक्ता लज्जावखंडितमुर्वशी तं प्राह
O beautiful-browed one, I desire you; be gracious, for I bear affection for you.' Thus addressed, Urvashi, her modesty overcome, replied to him.
भवत्वेवं यदि मे समयपरिपालनं भवान् करोतीत्याख्याते पुनरपि तामाह
'So be it, if you uphold my conditions,' she said; then he spoke to her again.
आख्याहि मे समयमिति
'Tell me your conditions,' he said.
अथ पृष्टा पुनरप्यब्रवीत्
Then, when asked, she spoke again.
शयनसमीपे ममोरणकद्वयं पुत्रभूतं नापनेयम्
'Near my bed, my two lambs, who are like sons to me, must not be taken away.'
भवांश्च मया न नग्नो द्र ष्टव्यः
'You must not be seen naked by me.'
घृतमात्रं च ममाहार इति
'My food must be only clarified butter.'
एवमेवेति भूपतिरप्याह
The king replied, 'So be it.'
तया सह स चावनिपतिरलकयां चैत्ररथादिवनेष्वमलपद्मखंडेषु मानसादिसरस्स्वतिरमणीयेषु रममाण एकषष्टिवर्षाण्यनुदिनप्रवर्द्धमानप्रमोदोऽनयत्
With her, the king spent sixty years, delighting daily in increasing joy, in Alaka, in the forests of Chaitraratha and others, in the pure lotus groves, and in the charming lakes like Manasa.
उर्वशी च तदुपभोगात्प्रतिदिनप्रवर्द्धमानानुरागा अमरलोकवासेऽपि न स्पृहां चकार
Urvashi, from enjoying him, grew more attached to him each day, and even while dwelling in the world of the immortals, felt no longing for it.
विना चोर्वश्या सुरलोकोऽप्सरसां सिद्धगंधर्वाणां च नातिरमणीयोऽभवत्
Without Urvashi, the world of the gods was not very delightful for the apsaras, siddhas, and gandharvas.
ततश्चोर्वशी पुरूरवसोस्समयविद्विश्वावसुर्गंधर्वसमवेतो निशि शयनाभ्याशादेकमुरणकं जहार
Then, Urvashi, disregarding her agreement with Pururavas, together with Vishvavasu and the gandharvas, took one lamb from beside the bed at night.
तस्याकाशो! नीयमानस्योर्वशी शब्दमशृणोत्
As he was being led away, Urvashi heard a sound, O Akasha!
एवमुवाच च ममानाथायाः पुत्रः केनापह्रियते कं शरणमुपयामीति
She spoke thus: 'My son, who is helpless, is being taken by someone; to whom shall I go for refuge?'
