And when seven years had passed with that one in the womb, then that queen struck her womb with a stone.
A son was born.
And his name became Ashmaka.
Ashmaka had a son named Mulaka.
When the Kshatriya line was being destroyed on this earth, he was protected by women, who surrounded him unclothed; therefore, he is called 'protected by a shield of women.'
From Mulaka came Dasharatha, from him Ilivila, and then Vishvasaha.
From him was born Khatvanga, who, when requested by the gods in the battle between gods and demons, slew the demons.
And in heaven, the gods, pleased by his deeds, urged him to choose a boon.
He said, 'If a boon must be accepted, then let my lifespan be declared to me.'
Immediately, they told him, 'Only one moment of life remains for you,' and thus, with unwavering steps, endowed with lightness and other qualities, he came to the world of mortals in his celestial chariot and spoke this.
Never has even my own self been dearer to me than the Brahmins, nor have I ever transgressed my own duty, nor has my vision ever been marked by distinction among all gods, humans, animals, birds, trees, and others, as is the case with the unchanging Lord; thus, with unwavering steps, remembering that blessed Lord as the sages do, I shall attain him—so, meditating on the Supreme Soul, the Guru of the gods, whose form cannot be described, who is pure existence, in the one called Vāsudeva, he merged his self into the Supreme Self and attained dissolution there itself.
Here too is recited a verse, sung of old by the Seven Sages: 'No one equal to Khatvanga will ever exist on earth.'
Having come here from heaven, and obtaining life for only a moment, he, by intelligence and truth, united the three worlds.
From Khatvanga was born Dīrghabāhu.
Then Raghu was born.
From him came Aja.
From Aja came Dasharatha.
To him, the blessed Lord, lotus-naveled, for the sake of the world's preservation, entered into fourfold sonship as Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna, being a portion of his own Self.
Even while still a boy, Rāma went, at Viśvāmitra’s request, to protect the sacrifice and slew Tāṭakā.
And during the sacrifice, he struck Mārīca with an arrow and cast him into the ocean.
He brought destruction upon Subāhu and the others.
By his mere sight, he freed Ahalyā from her sin.
And at Janaka’s house, he effortlessly broke the great bow of Śiva.
He obtained Sītā, born from the earth, daughter of King Janaka, as his bride by winning the trial of strength.
He humbled Paraśurāma, who was the terror of all kṣatriyas and the blazing banner of the Bhārgava line, removing his pride in his strength and power.
Obeying his father’s command, disregarding all desire for the kingdom, he entered the forest accompanied by his wife and brother.
He slew Virādha, Khara, Dūṣaṇa, Kabandha, and Vāli.
He bridged the ocean, destroyed the entire race of Rākṣasas, and, after slaying Rāvaṇa, brought back his wife—who had been abducted—purified by the ordeal of fire, praised by the hosts of gods, and free from all blemish, to Ayodhyā.
Then, Maitreya, the auspicious ceremony of his coronation cannot be described even in a hundred years; listen to it briefly.
