Anaraṇya's son was Pṛṣadaśva; Pṛṣadaśva's son was Haryaśva.
His son was Hasta.
Then Sumanā was his son, and Tridhanvā was Sumanā's son, and Trayyāruṇi was Tridhanvā's son.
Trayyāruṇi's son was Satyavrata, who became known as Triśaṃku.
He attained the state of a caṇḍāla.
During a twelve-year drought, for the sustenance of Viśvāmitra's wife and children, and to avoid accepting gifts from caṇḍālas, he daily hunted deer meat at the banyan tree on the bank of the Jahnavi.
He was taken to heaven in his body by the greatly pleased Viśvāmitra.
From Triśaṃku came Hariścandra; from him, Rohitāśva; then Harita; from Harita, Caṃcu; from Caṃcu, Vijayavasudeva; from Vijayavasudeva, Ruruka; from Ruruka, Vṛka.
Then Vṛka's son was Bāhu, who, defeated by the Haihayas, Tāla-jaṃghas, and others, entered the forest with his wife.
And poison was given to his co-wife to prevent conception.
By her, his embryo remained in the womb for seven years.
And that Bāhu, due to old age, died near the hermitage of Aurva.
His wife, having prepared the funeral pyre and placed him upon it, resolved to follow him in death.
Then the venerable Aurva, knower of the threefold time—past, future, and present—came out from his hermitage and spoke to her.
Enough, enough of this wrongful resolve! Within your womb abides a universal emperor, lord of the whole earth, of immense strength and valor, performer of many sacrifices, destroyer of enemy hosts.
Told thus, 'You must not act so rashly and determinedly,' she abandoned her intention to follow her husband in death.
By that very sage, she was brought to his hermitage.
There, within a few days, a boy of great brilliance was born from that very embryo.
Aurva performed his birth rites and other ceremonies, and gave him the name Sagara.
When his sacred thread was invested, Aurva taught him the Vedas, scriptures, and the Bhārgava missile called Āgneya.
When his understanding had arisen, he spoke to his mother.
‘Mother, tell me—where are we? Where is our father?’ Thus he questioned, and his mother told him everything.
Then, angered by the usurpation of his father's kingdom, he vowed to destroy the Haihayas, Tālajaṅghas, and others.
He slew most of the Haihayas and Tālajaṅghas.
The Śakas, Yavanas, Kāmbojas, Pāradas, and Pahlavas, being slain, sought refuge with their family preceptor, Vasiṣṭha.
Then Vasiṣṭha, making them as living dead, spoke to Sagara.
‘My child, enough of these living dead and those who have followed them in death.’
‘These, by me alone, for the sake of upholding your vow, have been made to abandon their own duties and the company of twice-borns.’
So be it—having gladly accepted the words of their teacher, he caused them to adopt different appearances.
He made the Yavanas shave their heads, the Shakas shave the tops of their heads, the Paradas wear their hair long, the Pahlavas keep beards, and he made them, and other Kshatriyas, abandon recitation of sacred texts and ritual utterances.
