अन्नशाकाम्बुदानेन स्वशक्त्या पूजयेत् पुमान् । शयनप्रस्तरमहीप्रदानैरथवापि तम्
A man should honor him according to his ability with food, vegetables, and water, or with the gift of a bed, a mat, or even land.
कृतपादादिशौचस्तु भुक्त्वा सायं ततो गृही । गच्छेच्छय्यामस्फुटितामपि दारुमयीं नृप
Having cleansed the feet and so on, and having eaten in the evening, the householder should go to bed, even if it is a simple wooden one, O king.
नाविशालां न वै भुग्नां नासमां मलिनां न च । न च जन्तुमयीं शय्यामधितिष्ठेदनास्तृताम्
He should not lie on a bed that is too large, broken, uneven, dirty, made of living beings, or without bedding.
प्राच्यां दिशि शिरश्शस्तं याम्यायामथ वा नृप । सदैव स्वपतः पुंसो विपरीतं तु रोगदम्
It is best to sleep with the head to the east or south, O king; always sleeping otherwise brings disease.
ऋतावुपगमश्शस्तस्स्वपत्न्यामवनीपते । पुन्नामर्क्षे शुभे काले ज्येष्ठायुग्मासु रात्रिषु
Approaching one’s wife at the proper season is recommended, O lord of the earth, at an auspicious time under the male constellation, on nights when Jyeshtha and other paired stars are present.
नाद्यूनां तु स्त्रियं गच्छेन्नातुरां न रजस्वलाम् । नानिष्टां न प्रकुपितां न त्रस्तां न च गर्भिणीम्
One should not approach a woman who is too young, ill, menstruating, inauspicious, angry, frightened, or pregnant.
नादक्षिणां नान्यकामां नाकामां नान्ययोषितम् । क्षुत्क्षामां नातिभुक्तां वा स्वयं चैभिर्गुणैर्युतः
One should not approach a woman who is not one's wife, who is desired by another, who is unwilling, who is emaciated by hunger, who has eaten excessively, or who is endowed with these faults oneself.
स्नातस्स्रग्गन्धधृक् प्रीतो नाध्मातः क्षुधितोऽपि वा । सकामस्सानुरागश्च व्यवायं पुरुषो व्रजेत्
Having bathed, adorned with garlands and fragrance, pleased in mind, not bloated nor hungry, with desire and affection—thus should a man approach intercourse.
चतुर्दश्यष्टमी चैव तथामा चाथ पूर्णिमा । पर्वाण्येतानि राजेन्द्र रविसङ्क्रान्तिरेव च
The fourteenth day, the eighth day, the new moon, and the full moon—these are sacred occasions, O king, as is the sun's passage into a new sign.
तैलस्त्रीमांससम्भोगी सर्वेष्वेतेषु वै पुमान् । विण्मूत्रभोजनं नाम प्रयाति नरकं मृतः
A man who indulges in oil, meat, or intercourse on all these occasions surely goes, upon death, to the hell called Viṇmūtra-bhojana.
अशेषपर्वस्वेतेषु तस्मात् संयमिभिर्बुधैः । भाव्यं सच्छास्त्रदेवेज्याध्यानजप्यपरैर्नरैः
Therefore, on all such sacred days, the wise and self-controlled should engage in study of true scriptures, worship of the gods, meditation, and recitation.
नान्ययोनावयोनौ वा नोपयुक्तौषधस्तथा । द्विजदेवगुरूणां च व्यवायी नाश्रमे भवेत्
One should not approach a woman of another species, nor in an improper place, nor after taking medicine; nor should intercourse occur with the wives of twice-born, gods, or teachers, nor in a place of ascetic practice.
चैत्यचत्वरतीरेषु नैव गोष्ठे चतुष्पथे । नैव श्मशानोपवने सलिलेषु महीपते
Not at shrines, crossroads, cattle pens, cremation grounds, groves, or in water, O king, should intercourse take place.
प्रोक्तपर्वस्वशेषेषु नैव भूपाल सन्ध्ययोः । गच्छेद्व्यवायं मनसा न मूत्रोच्चारपीडितः
On the remaining sacred days, O king, and at twilight, one should not engage in intercourse, nor when pressed by the urge to urinate or defecate, even in thought.
पर्वस्वभिगमोऽधन्यो दिवा पापप्रदो नृप । भुवि रोगावहो नॄणामप्रशस्तो जलाशये
Intercourse on sacred days brings misfortune; by day, it gives sin, O king; on the ground, it brings disease to men; in water, it is considered blameworthy.
परदारान्न गच्छेत मनसापि कथञ्चन । किमु वाचास्थिबन्धोऽपि नास्ति तेषु व्यवायिनाम्
One should never, even in thought, approach another man's wife; what need to say by word or deed? For those who do so, there is no bond of righteousness.
मृतो नरकमभ्येति हीयतेऽत्रापि चायुषः । परदाररतिः पुंसामिह चामुत्र भीतिदा
Such a man, upon death, goes to hell and even in this life his lifespan is diminished; union with another's wife brings fear both here and hereafter.
इति मत्वा स्वदारेषु ऋतुमत्सु बुधो व्रजेत् । यथोक्तदोषहीनेषु सकामेष्वनृतावपि
Knowing this, the wise man should approach his own wife at the proper season, free from the faults described, with desire, even if not in the fertile period.
(गृहस्थाचारकथनम्) और्व उवाच देवगोब्राहमणान् सिद्धान् वृद्धाचार्यांस्तथार्चयेत् । द्विकालञ्च नमेत् सन्ध्यामग्नीनुपचरेत् तथा
Aurva said: One should honor the gods, cows, brahmins, perfected beings, elders, and teachers; one should bow to the twilight twice daily and serve the sacred fires accordingly.
सदानुपहते वस्त्रे प्रशस्ताश्च महौषधीः । गारुडानि च रत्नानि बिभृयात् प्रयतो नरः
A man should always wear unsoiled garments, use excellent herbs, and, with devotion, wear gems of the Garuḍa class.
प्रस्निग्धामलकेशश्च सुगन्धिश्चारुवेषधृक् । सिताः सुमनसो हृद्या बिभृयाच्च नरः सदा
He should keep his hair smooth and clean, be fragrant, wear pleasing attire, and always bear white, delightful, and charming flowers.
किञ्चित् परस्वं न हरेन्नाल्पमप्यप्रियं वदेत् । प्रियञ्च नानृतं ब्रूयान्नान्यदोषानुदीरयेत्
He should not take even a little of another's property, nor speak even a little unpleasantly; he should not speak falsehoods to please, nor point out the faults of others.
नान्यश्रियं तथा वैरं रोचयेत् पुरुषर्षभ । न दुष्टं यानमारोहेत् कूलच्छाया न संश्रयेत्
He should not covet another's wealth or enmity, O best of men; he should not ride in a faulty vehicle nor take shelter under a riverbank's shade.
विद्विष्टपतितोन्मत्तबहुवैरादिकीटकैः । बन्धकी बन्धकीभर्तुः क्षुद्रानृतकथैस्सह
He should avoid association with those who are hated, fallen, mad, hostile, or infested with insects, as well as with prostitutes, their clients, and those who tell base lies.
तथातिव्ययशीलैश्च परिवादरतैश्शठैः । बुधो मैत्रीं न कुर्वीत नैकः पन्थानमाश्रयेत्
A wise person should not make friends with those who are excessively wasteful, fond of slander, or deceitful; nor should he travel alone.
नावगाहेज्जलौघस्य वेगमग्रे नरेश्वर । प्रदीप्तं वेश्म न विशेन्नारोहेच्छिखरं तरोः
O king, one should not enter the swift current of a river, nor enter a burning house, nor climb to the top of a tree.
न कुर्याद्दन्तसङ्घर्षं कुष्णीयाच्च न नासिकाम् । नासंवृतमुखो जृम्भेच्छ्वासकासौ विसर्जयेत्
One should not grind the teeth together, nor pick the nose; when yawning, the mouth should not be left uncovered, and one should expel breath and cough away from others.
नोच्चैर्हसेत् सशब्दं च न मुञ्चेत् पवनं बुधः । नखान्न खादयेच्छिन्द्यान्न तृणं न महीं लिखेत्
A wise person should not laugh loudly or make noise, nor pass wind audibly; he should not eat with his nails, cut grass, or scratch the ground.
न श्मश्रु भक्षयेल्लोष्टं न मृद्नीयाद्विचक्षणः । ज्योतींष्यमेध्यशस्तानि नाभिवीक्षेत च प्रभो
A discerning person should not eat beard or clay, nor knead them; he should not look at fire, impure things, or forbidden acts, O lord.
नग्नां परस्त्रियं चैव सूर्यं चास्तमयोदये । न हुङ्कुर्याच्छवं गन्धं शवगन्धो हि सोमजः
One should not look at a naked woman who is not his wife, nor at the sun during sunrise or sunset; one should not sniff a corpse, for the smell of a corpse is of Soma.
