शशादस्य तस्य पुरंजयोनाम पुत्रोभवत्
Śaśāda had a son named Purañjaya.
तस्येदं चान्यत्
And this, too, is related to him.
पुरा हि त्रेतायां देवासुरयुद्धमतिभीषणमभवत्
Long ago, in the Tretā age, there was a most terrible battle between the gods and the demons.
तत्र चातिबलिभिरसुरैरमराः पराजितास्ते भगवंतं विष्णुमाराधयांचक्रुः
There, the gods were defeated by the exceedingly powerful demons, and they worshipped the blessed Viṣṇu.
प्रसन्नश्च देवानामनादिनिधनोखिलजगत्परायणो नारायणः प्राह
Nārāyaṇa, the eternal refuge of all the worlds, who has neither beginning nor end, was pleased and spoke to the gods.
ज्ञातमेतन्मया युष्माभिर्यदभिलषितं तदर्थमिदं श्रूयताम्
'I know what you desire; listen now to what is to be done for that purpose.'
पुरंजयो नाम राजर्षेश्शशादस्य तनयः क्षत्त्रियवरो यस्तस्य शरीरेहमंश्नो स्वयमेवावतीर्य तानश्षोआ!नसुरान्निहनिष्यामि तद्भवद्भिः पुरंजयोऽसुरवधार्थमुद्योगं कार्यतामिति
'Purañjaya, the son of Śaśāda, a royal sage and foremost of kṣatriyas, will be my own portion descended into his body; I will destroy those demons. Therefore, you must make preparations with Purañjaya for the destruction of the demons.'
एतच्च श्रुत्वा प्रणम्य भगवंतं विष्णुममराः पुरंजयसकाशमाजग्मुरूचुश्चैनम्
Hearing this, the gods bowed to the blessed Viṣṇu, went to Purañjaya, and spoke to him.
भोभोः क्षत्त्रियवर्यास्माभिरभ्यर्थितेन भवतास्माकमरातिवधोद्यतानां कर्तव्यं साहाय्यमिच्छामः तद्भवतास्माकमभ्यागतानां प्रणयभंगो न कार्य इत्युक्तः पुरंजयः प्राह
'O best of kṣatriyas, we, having been entreated by you, seek your help in the destruction of our enemies. Since we have come to you, you must not refuse us.' Thus addressed, Purañjaya replied:
त्रैलोक्यनाथो योयं युष्माकमिंद्र ः! शतक्रतुरस्य यद्यहं स्कंधाधिरूढो युष्माकमरातिभस्सह योत्स्ये तदहं भवतां सहायः स्याम्
'If Indra, the lord of the three worlds, Śatakratu himself, bears me on his shoulders in battle against your enemies, then I will be your ally.'
इत्याकर्ण्य समस्तदेवैरिंद्रे ण च बाढमित्येवं समन्विच्छितम्
Hearing this, all the gods, along with Indra, agreed, saying, 'So be it.'
ततश्च शतक्रतोर्वृषरूपधारिणः ककुदि स्थितोऽतिरोषसमन्वितो भगवतश्चराचरगुरोरच्युतस्य तेजसाप्यायितो देवासुरसंग्रामे समस्तानेवासुरान्निजघान
Then, Indra, assuming the form of a bull, stood with Purañjaya on his hump, filled with great energy by the power of the blessed, imperishable teacher of all beings, and in the battle between gods and demons, he slew all the demons.
यतश्च वृषभककुदि स्थितेन राज्ञा दैतेयबलं निषूदितमतश्चासौ ककुत्स्थसंज्ञामवाप
Because the king, standing on the bull's hump, destroyed the army of the daityas, he became known as Kakutstha.
ककुत्स्थस्याप्यनेनाः पुत्रोऽभवत्
Kakutstha also had a son named Anenāḥ.
पृथुरनेनसः
Pṛthu's son was Anenasa.
पृथोर्विष्टराश्वः
Anenasa's son was Viṣṭarāśva.
तस्यापि चांद्रो युवनाश्वः
His son was Cāṃdra Yuvanāśva.
चांद्र स्य तस्य युवनाश्वस्य शावस्तः यः पुरीं शावस्तीं निवेशयामास
The son of Cāṃdra Yuvanāśva was Śāvasta, who established the city of Śāvastī.
शावस्तस्य बृहदश्वः
Śāvasta's son was Bṛhadaśva.
तस्यापि कुवलयाश्वः
His son was Kuvalayāśva.
योसावुदकस्य महर्षेरपकारिणं दुंदुनामानमसुरं वैष्णवेन तेजसाप्यायितः पुत्रसहस्रैरेकविंशद्भिः परिवृतो जघान दुंदुमारसंज्ञामवाप
He, empowered by Viṣṇu's energy and surrounded by his twenty-one thousand sons, slew the asura named Duṃdhu, who was an enemy of the great sage Uḍaka, and thus gained the name Duṃdumāra.
तस्य च तनयास्समस्ता एव दुंदुमुखनिश्वासाग्निना विप्लुष्टा विनेशुः
All his sons perished, scorched by the fire of Duṃdhu's breath.
दृढाश्वचंद्रा श्वकपिलाश्वाश्च त्रयः केवलं शो!षिताः
Only three survived: Dṛḍhāśva, Candra, and Kapilāśva.
वृढाश्वाद्धर्यश्वः
From Vṛḍhāśva came Haryaśva.
तस्माच्च निकुंभः
From him was born Nikuṃbha.
निकुंभस्यामिताश्वः
Nikuṃbha's son was Amitāśva.
ततश्च कृशाश्वः
From him came Kṛśāśva.
तस्माच्च प्रसेनजित्
From him was born Prasenajit.
प्रसेनजितो युवनाश्वोभवत्
Prasenajit's son was Yuvanāśva.
तस्य चापुत्रस्यातिनिर्वेदान्मुनीनामाश्रममंडले निवसतो दयालुभिर्मुनिभिरपत्योत्पादनायेष्टः कृता
He, being sonless and deeply dejected, dwelt in the hermitage circle of the sages, where compassionate sages performed a sacrifice for the birth of a child.
