Śīrāyudha then duly married Revatī, the daughter of King Raivata; after giving away his daughter, the self-controlled king went to Hemālaya for ascetic practice.
Śrī Parāśara said: While Kakudmī Raivata had not yet returned from Brahmaloka, the righteous city of Kuśasthalī, so named for its virtuous people, was destroyed by Rākṣasas of the Tamas class.
Because of fear of the Rākṣasas, his hundred brothers scattered in all directions.
And their descendants became Kṣatriyas throughout all regions.
From Vṛṣṭa came the Vārṣṭaka Kṣatriya lineage.
Nābhāga's son was Nābhāgasaṃtra.

His son was Ambarīṣa.
Ambarīṣa's son was Virūpa.
From Virūpa was born Pṛṣadaśva.
Then came Rathītara.
Here is a verse: These, born of Kṣatriya lineage, are also remembered as descendants of Aṅgiras; among the Rathītaras, the foremost are those twice-born who have adopted the Kṣatriya order.
From Manu, who was hungry, was born his son Ikṣvāku from his nose.

His three principal sons were Vikukṣi, Nimi, and Daṇḍa.

And forty-eight were kings of the southern regions.
Ikṣvāku, having performed the śrāddha for his fathers, ordered Vikukṣi: 'Bring meat suitable for the śrāddha.'
He, having received the command, said 'so be it,' took up his bow and, entering the forest, killed many animals; exhausted, extremely hungry, and afflicted, Vikukshi ate a hare alone, and bringing the hare's meat, offered it to his father.
Vasiṣṭha, the preceptor of the Ikṣvāku lineage, was instructed to purify it, but said: 'This meat has been defiled by your wicked son, for he has eaten a hare, and thus it is impure.'
Then, having been thus addressed by his teacher, Vikukshi received the name 'Śaśāda' and was abandoned by his father.

Long ago, in the Tretā age, there was a most terrible battle between the gods and the demons.
There, the gods were defeated by the exceedingly powerful demons, and they worshipped the blessed Viṣṇu.
Nārāyaṇa, the eternal refuge of all the worlds, who has neither beginning nor end, was pleased and spoke to the gods.
'I know what you desire; listen now to what is to be done for that purpose.'
'Purañjaya, the son of Śaśāda, a royal sage and foremost of kṣatriyas, will be my own portion descended into his body; I will destroy those demons. Therefore, you must make preparations with Purañjaya for the destruction of the demons.'
Hearing this, the gods bowed to the blessed Viṣṇu, went to Purañjaya, and spoke to him.
'O best of kṣatriyas, we, having been entreated by you, seek your help in the destruction of our enemies. Since we have come to you, you must not refuse us.' Thus addressed, Purañjaya replied:
'If Indra, the lord of the three worlds, Śatakratu himself, bears me on his shoulders in battle against your enemies, then I will be your ally.'
