नरः ख्यातिः केतुरूपो जानुजङ्घादयस्तथा । पुत्रास्तु तामसस्यासन्नाजानः सुमहाबलाः ॥ ३,१.
Nara, Khyāti, Keturūpa, Jānujaṅgha, and others—these were the sons of Tāmasa, all of great strength.
पञ्चमे वापि मैत्रेय रैवतो नाम नामतः । मनुर्विभुश्च तत्रेन्द्रो देवांश्चात्रान्तरे शृणु ॥ ३,१.
In the fifth, O Maitreya, Manu was named Raivata, and Vibhu was the Indra; now hear of the gods in that interval.
अमिताभा भूतरया वैकुण्ठाः सुसमेधसः । एते देवगणास्तत्र चतुर्दश चतुर्दश ॥ ३,१.
Amitābhā, Bhūtarayā, Vaikuṇṭhas, and Susamedhas—these were the groups of gods there, fourteen in number.
हिरण्यरोमा वेदाश्रिरूर्ध्वबाहुस्तथावरः । वेदबाहुः सुधामा च पर्जन्यश्च महामुनिः । एते सप्तर्षयो विप्र तत्रासन्रैवतेन्तरे ॥ ३,१.
Hiraṇyaroma, Vedāśri, Ūrdhvabāhu, Vedabāhu, Sudhāma, Parjanya, and Avyaya—these were the seven sages, O sage, in the Raivata interval.
बलबन्धुश्च संभाव्यः सत्यकाद्याश्च तत्सुताः । नरेन्द्राश्च महावीर्या बभूवुर्मुनिसत्तम ॥ ३,१.
Balabandhu, Saṃbhāvya, Satyakā, and others—these sons became kings of great might, O best of sages.
स्वारोचिषश्चौत्तमश्च तामसो रैवतस्तथा । प्रियव्रतान्वया ह्येते चत्वारो मनवः स्मृताः ॥ ३,१.
Svārociṣa, Uttama, Tāmasa, and Raivata—these four Manus are remembered as descended from Priyavrata.
विष्णुमाराध्य तपसा स राजर्षिः प्रियव्रतः । मन्वन्तराधिपानेताल्लंब्धवानात्मवंशजान् ॥ ३,१.
Having worshipped Viṣṇu through austerity, the royal sage Priyavrata obtained as rulers of the Manvantaras his own descendants.
षष्ठे मन्वंरते चासीच्चाक्षुषाख्यस्तथा मनुः । मनोजवस्तथैवेन्द्रो देवानपि निबोध मे ॥ ३,१.
In the sixth Manvantara, the Manu was known as Cākṣuṣa; Manojava was the Indra. Now hear from me of the gods as well.
आप्याः प्रसूता भव्याश्च पृथुकाश्चा दिवौकसः । महानुभावा लेखाश्च पञ्चैते ह्यष्टका गणाः ॥ ३,१.
Āpyā, Prasūta, Bhavyā, Pṛthukā, and Lekhā—these five, together with three others, formed the eight groups of gods.
सुमेधा विरजाश्चैव हविष्मानुत्तमो मधुः । अतिनामा सहिष्णुश्च सप्तासन्निति चर्षयः ॥ ३,१.
Sumedhā, Virajā, Haviṣmān, Uttama, Madhu, Atināmā, and Sahiṣṇu—these seven were the sages.
ऊरुः पूरुः शतद्युम्नप्रमुखाः सुमहाबलाः । चाक्षुषस्य मनोः पुत्राः पृथिवीपतयोऽभवन् ॥ ३,१.
Ūru, Pūru, and Śatadyumna, foremost among the mighty—these were the sons of Cākṣuṣa Manu, who became rulers of the earth.
विवस्वतः सुतो विप्र श्राद्धदेवो महाद्युतिः । मनुः संवर्तते धीमान् सांप्रतं सप्तमेन्तरे ॥ ३,१.
O sage, the illustrious and wise Manu now presiding in the seventh interval is Śrāddhadeva, the son of Vivasvat.
आदित्यवसुरुद्राद्या देवाश्चात्र महामुने । पुरन्दरस्तथैवात्र मैत्रेय त्रिदशेश्वरः ॥ ३,१.
O great sage, here are the gods such as the Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, and others; Purandara, the lord of the thirty gods, is also present here, Maitreya.
वशिष्ठः काश्यपोथात्रिर्जमदग्निः सगौतमः । विश्वामित्रभरद्वाजौ सप्त सप्तर्षयोऽभवन् ॥ ३,१.
Vasiṣṭha, Kāśyapa, Atri, Jamadagni, Gautama, Viśvāmitra, and Bharadvāja—these seven became the seven great sages.
इक्ष्वाकुश्च नृगश्चैव धृष्टः शर्यातिरेव च । नरिष्यन्तश्च विख्यातो नाभागोरिष्ट एव च ॥ ३,१.
Ikṣvāku, Nṛga, Dhṛṣṭa, Śaryāti, Nariṣyanta, the renowned Nābhāga, and Iṣṭa—these are also mentioned.
करूषश्च पृषध्रश्च सुमहांल्लोकविश्रुतः । मनोर्वैवस्वतस्यैते नव पुत्राः सुधार्मिकाः ॥ ३,१.
Karūṣa, Pṛṣadhra, and Sumahān, famed throughout the worlds—these are the nine righteous sons of Manu Vaivasvata.
विष्णुशक्तिरनौपम्या सत्त्वोद्रिक्ता स्थितौ स्थिता । मन्वन्तरेष्वशेषेषु देवत्वेनाधितिष्ठति ॥ ३,१.
The power of Viṣṇu, incomparable and abundant in purity, remains established in existence; in every Manvantara, it presides as divinity.
अंशेन तस्या जज्ञेऽसौ यज्ञःस्वायंभुवेन्तरे । आकूत्यां मानसो देव उत्पन्नः प्रथमेन्तरे ॥ ३,१.
In the Svāyambhuva Manvantara, a portion of that power was born as Yajña; in the first Manvantara, the mind-born god was produced from Ākūti.
ततः पुनः स वै देवः प्राप्ते स्वारोचिषेन्तरे । तुषितायां समुत्पन्नो ह्याजिषस्तुषितैः सह ॥ ३,१.
Then again, when the Svārociṣa Manvantara arrived, that god was born from Tuṣitā, known as Ājita, together with the Tuṣitas.
औत्तमप्यन्तरे देवस्तुषितस्तु पुनः स वै । सत्यायामभवत्सत्यः सत्यैः सह सुरोत्तमैः ॥ ३,१.
In the third Manvantara, called Uttama, that god was again Tuṣita; in Satyā, he became Satya, along with the excellent Satyas.
तामसस्यान्तरे चैव संप्राप्तो पुनरेव हि । हर्यायां हरिभिः सार्ध हरिरेव बभूव ह ॥ ३,१.
And in the Tāmasa Manvantara, when it arrived again, Hari was born from Haryā, together with the Haris.
रैवतेप्यन्तरे देवःसंभूत्यां मानसो हरिः । संभूतो रैवतैः सार्ध देवैर्देववरो हरिः ॥ ३,१.
In the Raivata Manvantara, the divine Hari was born from Saṃbhūti, together with the Raivata gods, as the foremost among them.
चाक्षुषे चान्तरे देवो वैकुण्ठः पुरुषोत्तमः । विकुण्ठायामसौ जज्ञे वैकुण्ठैर्दैवतैः सह ॥ ३,१.
In the Cākṣuṣa Manvantara, the supreme god Vaikuṇṭha was born from Vikuṇṭhā, together with the Vaikuṇṭha gods.
मन्वन्तरेत्र संप्राप्ते तथा वैवस्वते द्विज । वामनः काश्यपाद्विष्णुरदित्यां संबभूव ह ॥ ३,१.
And when the Vaivasvata Manvantara arrived, O twice-born, Viṣṇu appeared as Vāmana, born from Aditi and Kāśyapa.
त्रिभिः क्रमैरिमांल्लोकाञ्जित्वा येन महात्मना । पुरन्दराय त्रैलोक्यं दत्तं निहतकण्टकम् ॥ ३,१.
By three strides, the great soul conquered these worlds, and gave the three realms, cleared of obstacles, to Purandara.
इत्येतास्तनवस्तस्य सप्तमन्वन्तरेषु वै । सप्तस्वेवाभवन्विप्र याभिः संवर्धिताः प्रजाः ॥ ३,१.
These are the forms of his in the seven Manvantaras; O sage, by which the peoples have been nurtured.
यस्माद्विष्टमिदं विश्वं यस्य शक्त्या महात्मनः । तस्मात्स प्रोच्यते विष्णुर्विशोर्धातोः प्रवेशनात् ॥ ३,१.
Because this universe is pervaded by the power of that great soul, he is called Viṣṇu, from the root 'viś', meaning 'to enter'.
सर्वे च देवा मनवः समस्ताः सप्तर्षयो ये मनुसूनवश्च । इन्द्रश्चयोऽयं त्रिदशेशभूतो विष्णोरशोषास्तु विभूतयस्ताः ॥ ३,१.
All the gods, Manus, the seven sages, the sons of Manu, and Indra, who is lord of the thirty gods—these are all manifestations of Viṣṇu's inexhaustible powers.
मैत्रेय उवाच प्रोक्तान्येतानि भवता सप्त मन्वन्तराणि वै । भविष्याण्यपि विप्रर्ष ममाख्यातुं त्वमर्हसि ॥ ३,२.
Maitreya said: You have described these seven Manvantaras; O sage among the twice-born, you should also tell me about those that are yet to come.
श्रीपराशर उवाच सूर्यस्य पत्नी संज्ञाभूत्तनया विश्वकर्मणः । मनुर्यमो यमी चैव तदपत्यानि वै मुने ॥ ३,२.
Śrī Parāśara said: Saṃjñā, daughter of Viśvakarma, became the wife of Sūrya; Manu, Yama, and Yamī are her children, O sage.
