रौरवः सूकरो रोधस्तालो विशसनस्तथा । महाज्वालस्तप्तकुम्भो लवणेथ विलोहितः ॥ २,६.
Raurava, Sūkara, Rodha, Tāla, Viśasana, Mahājvāla, Taptakumbha, Lavaṇa, and Vilohita—
रुधिराम्भो वैतरणिः क्रिमिशः क्रिमिभोजनः । असिपत्रवनं कृष्णो लालाभक्षश्च दारुणः ॥ २,६.
Rudhirāmbha, Vaitaraṇī, Krimiśa, Krimibhojana, Asipatravana, Kṛṣṇa, and the dreadful Lālābhakṣa—
तथा पूयवहः पापो वह्निज्वालो ह्यधः शिराः । संदंशः कालसूत्रश्च तमश्चावीचिरेव च ॥ २,६.
Also Pūyavaha, Pāpa, Vahnijvāla, Adhaḥśirā, Saṃdaṃśa, Kālasūtra, Tamaḥ, and Avīci—
श्वभोजनोथाप्रतिष्ठश्चाप्रचिश्च तथा परः । इत्येवमादयश्चान्ये नरका भृशदारुणाः ॥ २,६.
Śvabhojana, Athāpratiṣṭha, Āpraci, and others—thus, there are many other hells, exceedingly terrible.
यमस्य विषये घोराः शस्त्राग्निभयदायिनः । पतन्ति येषु पुरुषाः पापकर्मरतास्तु ये ॥ २,६.
In the realm of Yama, these dreadful places bring fear from weapons and fire, into which those devoted to sinful acts fall.
कूटसाक्षी तथासम्यक्पक्षपातेन यो वदेत् । यश्चान्यदनृतं वक्ति स नरो याति रौरवम् ॥ २,६.
He who gives false testimony, or speaks with partiality, or utters other lies, that man goes to Raurava.
भ्रूणहा पुरहन्ता च गौघ्नश्च मुनिसत्तम । यान्ति ते नरकं रोधं यश्चोच्छ्वासनिरोधकः ॥ २,६.
He who kills a fetus, destroys a city, slays a herd of cows, or restrains another's breath, O best of sages, they go to the hell called Rodha.
सुरापो ब्रह्महा हर्ता सुवर्णस्य च सूकरे । प्रयान्ति नरके यश्च तैः संसर्गमुपैति वै ॥ २,६.
One who drinks liquor, kills a Brāhmaṇa, steals gold, or associates with such, goes to Sūkara hell.
राजन्यवैश्यहन्ता च तथैव गुरुतल्पगः । तप्तकुण्डेस्वसृगामी हन्ति राजभटांश्च यः ॥ २,६.
He who kills a Kṣatriya or Vaiśya, violates his teacher's bed, sheds blood in heated vessels, or slays royal guards, goes to hell.
साध्वीविक्रयकृद्बन्धपालः केसरिविक्रयी । तप्तलोहे पतन्त्येते यश्च च भक्तं परित्यजेत् ॥ २,६.
One who sells a virtuous wife, a jailer, a seller of lion's manes, or one who abandons his devotee—all these fall into heated iron.
स्नुषां सुतां चापि गत्वा महाज्वाले निपात्यते । अवमन्ता गुरूणां यो यश्चाक्रोष्टा नराधमः ॥ २,६.
He who approaches his daughter-in-law or daughter is cast into the great flame; one who insults teachers or abuses others, O worst of men—
वेददूषयितायश्च वेदविक्रयकश्च यः । अगम्यगामी यश्च स्यात्ते यान्ति लवणं द्विज ॥ २,६.
He who corrupts the Veda, sells the Veda, or goes to forbidden women, O twice-born, they go to Lavaṇa hell.
चोरो विलोहे पतति मर्यादादूषकस्तथा ॥ २,६.
A thief falls into molten iron, as does one who violates boundaries.
देवद्विजपितृद्वेष्टा रत्नदूषयिता च यः । स याति क्रिमिभक्षे वै क्रिमीशे च दुरिष्टकृत् ॥ २,६.
He who hates gods, Brāhmaṇas, or ancestors, or corrupts gems, goes to Krimibhakṣa or Krimīśa, the hell of worms, O doer of evil.
पितृदेवातिथींस्त्यक्त्वा पर्यश्नाति नराधमः । लालाभक्षे स यात्युग्रे शरकर्ता च वेधके ॥ २,६.
The lowest of men, who eats without first honoring ancestors, gods, and guests, eats only saliva and goes to a terrible place pierced by arrows and stakes.
करोति कर्णिनो यश्च यश्च खङ्गादिकृन्नरः । प्रयान्त्येते विशसने नरके भृशदरुणे ॥ २,६.
He who cuts off ears, and he who kills with a sword or similar weapon—these all go to a very dreadful hell of torture.
असत्प्रतिगृहीता तु नरके यात्यधोमुखे । अयाज्ययाजकश्चैव तथा नक्षत्रसूचकः ॥ २,६.
One who accepts improper gifts goes to a hell where he hangs head down; so too the priest who performs sacrifices for the unworthy, and the one who points out stars for omens.
वेगी पूयवहे चैको याति मष्टान्नभुङ्गरः ॥ २,६.
He who eats black gram with pus, or eats alone with speed, goes to hell.
लाक्षामासरसानां च तिलानां लवणस्य च । विक्रेता ब्रह्मणो याति तमेव नरकं द्विज ॥ २,६.
O twice-born, a Brahmin who sells lac, meat, liquids, sesame seeds, or salt goes to that very hell.
मार्जारकुक्कुटच्छाग श्ववराहविहङ्गमान् । पोषयन्नरकं याति तमेव द्विजसत्तम ॥ २,६.
O best of the twice-born, one who keeps cats, cocks, goats, dogs, pigs, or birds for livelihood goes to that same hell.
रङ्गोपजीवी कैवर्तः कुम्डाशी गरदस्तथा । सूची माहिषकश्चैव पर्वकारी च यो द्विजः ॥ २,६.
A gambler, a fisherman, one who eats from earthen pots, a poisoner, a needle-maker, a buffalo-keeper, and a Brahmin who works on festival days—all these go to hell.
अगारदाही मित्रघ्नः शाकुनिर्ग्रमयाजकः । रुधिरान्धे पतन्त्येते सोमं विक्रीणते च ये ॥ २,६.
An arsonist, a friend-slayer, a soothsayer, a village priest, one blinded by blood, and those who sell Soma—all these fall into hell.
मखहा ग्रामहन्ता च याति वैतरणीं नरः ॥ २,६.
One who destroys a sacrifice or a village goes to the river Vaitarani, O man.
रेतः पातादिकर्तारो मर्यादाभेदिनो हि ये । ते कृष्णे यान्त्यशौचाश्च कुहकाजीविनश्च ये ॥ २,६.
Those who commit seminal loss, violate boundaries, are impure, or live by deceit—they go to the dark hell.
असिपत्रवनं याति वनच्छेदी वृथैव यः । औरभ्रिको मृगव्याधो वह्निज्वाले पतन्ति वै ॥ २,६.
He who cuts down forests without cause goes to the forest of sword-leaves; the sheep-stealer and the hunter fall into flames of fire.
यान्त्येते द्विज तत्रैव ये चापाकेषु वह्निदाः ॥ २,६.
O twice-born, those who set fire to houses or fields also go there.
व्रतानां लोपको यश्चस्वाश्रमाद्विच्युतश्च यः । सन्दंशयातनामध्ये पततस्तावुभावपि ॥ २,६.
He who breaks vows or abandons his own order falls, along with the other, into the midst of iron-pincer torments.
दिवा स्वप्ने च स्कन्दन्ते ये नरा ब्रह्मचारिणः । पुत्रैरध्यापिता ये च ते पतन्ति श्वभोजने ॥ २,६.
Men who, as celibates, emit semen in sleep or by day, and those who teach their sons the Veda, fall into the food of dogs.
एते चान्ये च नरकाः शतशोथ सहस्रशः । येषु दुष्कृतकर्माणः पच्यन्ते यातनागताः ॥ २,६.
These and countless other hells, by the hundreds and thousands, are where those who have committed evil deeds suffer torments.
यथैव पापान्येतानि तथान्यानि सहस्रशः । भुज्यन्ते तानि पुरुषैर्नरकान्तरगोचरैः ॥ २,६.
Just as these sins exist, so too do thousands of others, and men experience them in the various regions of hell.
