श्वेतञ्च हरितं चैव वैद्युतं मानसं तथा । जीमूतं रोहितं चैव सुप्रभं चापि शोभनम् । सप्तैतानि तु वर्षाणि चातुर्वर्ण्ययुतानि वै ॥ २,४.
Śveta, Harita, Vaidyuta, Mānasa, Jīmūta, Rohita, and Suprabha—these are the seven regions, each inhabited by the four social orders.
शाल्मले ये तु वर्णाश्च वसन्त्येते महामुने । कपिलाश्चारुणाः पीताः कृष्णाश्चैव पृथक्पृथक् ॥ २,४.
O great sage, the people who dwell on Śālmalī are of four colors: tawny, red, yellow, and black, each distinct from the others.
ब्रह्मणाः क्षत्रया वैश्याः शुद्राश्चैव यजन्तितम् । भगवन्तं समस्तस्य विष्णुमात्मानमव्ययम् । वायुभूतं मखश्रेष्ठैर्यज्वनो यज्ञसंस्थितिम् ॥ २,४.
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras there worship the Blessed Lord, the imperishable Self of all, in the form of wind, with excellent sacrifices, upholding the order of sacrifice.
देवानामत्र सान्नध्यमतीव सुमनोहरे । शाल्मलिः सुमहान्वृक्षो नाम्ना निर्वृतिकारकः ॥ २,४.
There stands the Śālmalī tree, exceedingly large and delightful, known as the bringer of contentment, beloved among the gods.
एष द्वीपः समुद्रेण सुरोदेन समावृतः । विस्ताराच्छाल्मलस्यैव समेन तु समन्ततः ॥ २,४.
This continent is surrounded by the ocean called Suroda, which is equal in extent to Śālmalī on all sides.
सुरोदकः परिवृतः कुशद्वीपेन सर्वतः । शाल्मलस्य तु विस्तराद्द्विगुणेन समन्ततः ॥ २,४.
Encircled by Suroda, on all sides lies the Kuśa continent, which is twice the width of Śālmalī.
ज्योतिष्मतः कुशद्वीपे सप्त पुत्राञ्छृणुष्व तान् ॥ २,४.
Hear now the names of the seven sons of Jyotiṣmat, the ruler of Kuśa-dvīpa.
उद्भिदो वेणुमांश्चैव वेरथो लम्बनो धृतिः । प्रभाकरोतिकपिलस्तन्नामा वर्षपद्धतिः ॥ २,४.
Udbhida, Veṇumān, Veratha, Lambana, Dhṛti, Prabhākara, and Kapila—these are their names, and thus the regions are named after them.
तस्मिन्वसन्ति मनुजाः सह दैते यदानवैः । तथैव देवगन्धर्वयक्षकिंपुरुषादयः ॥ २,४.
There dwell humans together with Daityas and Dānavas, as well as gods, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Kimpuruṣas, and others.
वर्णास्तत्रापि चत्वारो निजानुष्ठानतत्पराः । दमिनः शुष्मिणः स्नेहा मन्देहाश्च महामुने ॥ २,४.
There too are four social orders, intent on their own duties: Daminas, Śuṣmiṇas, Snehās, and Mandehas, O great sage.
ब्रह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश्चानुक्रमोदिताः ॥ २,४.
Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras are mentioned in order.
यथोस्ककर्मकर्तृत्वात्स्वाधिकारोक्षयाय ते । तत्रैव तं कुशद्वीपे ब्रह्मरूपं जनार्दनम् । यजन्तः क्षपयन्त्युग्रमधिकारफलप्रदम् ॥ २,४.
Because of their own prescribed duties and authority, there in Kuśa-dvīpa they worship Janārdana in the form of Brahman, and by such worship they destroy the severe fruits of excessive authority.
विद्रुमो हेमशैलश्च द्यतिमान् पुष्पवांस्तथा । कुशशयो हरिश्चैव सप्तमो मन्दराचलः ॥ २,४.
Vidruma, Hemashaila, Dyutimat, Pushpavan, Kushashaya, Hari, and the seventh, Mandaracala—these are the mountains.
वर्षाचलास्तु सप्तैते तत्र द्वीपे महामुने । नद्यश्च सप्त तासां तु शृणु नामान्यनुक्रमात् ॥ २,४.
These seven are the mountains of the region, O great sage, and there are also seven rivers there; listen to their names in order.
धूतपापा शिवा चैव पवित्रा संमतिस्तथा । विद्युदम्भा मही चान्या सर्वपाप हरास्त्विमाः ॥ २,४.
Dhūtapāpā, Shivā, Pavitrā, Saṃmati, Vidyudambhā, Mahī, and Sarvapāpaharā—these are the rivers that remove all sins.
अन्याः सहस्रशस्तत्र क्षुद्रनद्यस्तथाचलाः । कुशद्वीपे गुशस्तम्बः संज्ञया तस्य तत्स्मृतम् ॥ २,४.
There are thousands of other small rivers and hills there as well; in Kushadvīpa, Guśastamba is the renowned name among them.
तत्प्रमाणेन स द्वीपो घृतोदेन समावृतः । घृतोदश्च समुद्रो वै क्रौञ्चद्वीपेन संवृतः ॥ २,४.
That continent, of the same measure, is surrounded by the ocean of clarified butter; and the Ghṛtoda ocean is encircled by the Krauñca continent.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपो महाभाग श्रुयताञ्चापरो महान् । कुशद्वीपस्य विस्तारा द्द्विगुणो यस्य विस्तरः ॥ २,४.
O greatly fortunate one, listen now of another great continent, Krauñca, whose expanse is twice that of Kushadvīpa.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपे द्युतिमतः पुत्रास्तस्य महात्मनः । तन्नामानि च वर्षाणि तेषां चक्रे महीपतिः ॥ २,४.
In Krauñcadvīpa, the sons of Dyutimat, that great soul, became the rulers; the regions are named after them by the king.
कुशलो मल्लगश्चोष्णः पीवरोथान्धकारकः । मुनिश्च दुन्दुभिश्चैव सप्तैते तत्सुता मुने ॥ २,४.
Kushala, Mallaga, Uṣṇa, Pīvara, Andhakāraka, Muni, and Dundubhi—these seven, O sage, are his sons.
तत्रापि देवगन्धर्वसेविताः सुमनोहराः । वर्षाचला महाबुद्धे तेषां नामानि मे शृणु ॥ २,४.
There too are delightful mountain ranges, frequented by gods and gandharvas; O wise one, listen to their names.
क्रौञ्चश्च वामनश्चैव तृतीयश्चान्धकारकः । चतुर्थो रत्नशैलश्च स्वाहिनी हयसन्निभः ॥ २,४.
Krauñca, Vāmana, the third Andhakāraka, the fourth Ratnashaila, Svāhinī, and Hayasannibha are the mountains.
दिवावृत्पञ्चमश्चात्र तथान्यः पुण्डरीकवान् । दुन्दुभिश्च महाशैलो द्विगुणास्त परस्परम् । द्वीपाद्वीपेषु ये शैला यथा द्वीपानि ते तथा ॥ २,४.
Divāvṛt is the fifth, then Puṇḍarīkavān, and Dundubhi, the great mountain; each is twice the size of the previous, just as the continents are.
वर्षेष्वेतेषु रम्येषु तथा शैलवरेषु च । निवसंति निरातङ्काः सह देवगणैः प्रजाः ॥ २,४.
In these beautiful regions and excellent mountains, the people dwell without fear, together with hosts of gods.
पुष्कराः पुष्कला धन्यास्तिष्याख्याश्च महामुने । ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शुद्राश्चानुक्रमोदिताः ॥ २,४.
Puṣkarāḥ, Puṣkalā, Dhanyā, and Tiṣyā are the names, O great sage, of the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, and Shudras, as mentioned in order.
नदीर्मैत्रेय ते तत्र याः पिबन्ति शृणुष्व ताः । सप्तप्रधानाः शतशस्तत्रान्याः क्षुद्रनिम्नगाः ॥ २,४.
O Maitreya, listen to the rivers there from which they drink; there are seven principal ones, and hundreds of other small streams.
गौरी कुमुद्वती चैव सन्ध्या रात्रिर्मनोजवा । क्षान्तिश्च पुण्डरीका च सप्तैता वर्षनिम्नगाः ॥ २,४.
Gaurī, Kumudvatī, Sandhyā, Rātri, Manojavā, Kṣānti, and Puṇḍarīkā—these seven are the main rivers of the region.
तत्रापि विष्णुर्भगवान्पुष्काराद्यैर्जानार्दनः । यागौ रुद्रस्वरूपश्च इज्यते यज्ञसन्निधौ ॥ २,४.
There too, Lord Vishnu, known as Puṣkārādya and Janārdana, is worshipped in the form of Rudra at the sacrifices.
क्रौञ्चद्वीपः समुद्रेण दधिमण्डोदकेन च । आवृतः सर्वतः क्रौञ्च द्वीपतुल्येन मानतः ॥ २,४.
Krauñcadvīpa is entirely surrounded by the ocean of curds, which is equal in measure to the Krauñca continent.
दधिमण्डोदकश्चापि शाकद्वीपेन संवृतः । क्रौञ्चद्वीपस्य विस्ताराद्द्विगुणेन महामुने ॥ २,४.
And the ocean of curds is in turn encircled by the Śākadvīpa, which is twice the expanse of Krauñcadvīpa, O great sage.
