O Maitreya, that One who is the foundation of all, who pervades everything, supports the eight regions such as Kimpurusha and others, O great sage. In those regions, there is no sorrow, no toil, nor any disturbance from hunger, fear, or the like.
The people there are healthy, free from trouble, and untouched by any kind of suffering; their lives are steady, lasting for ten or twelve thousand years.
In those regions, the gods do not send rain, nor is there water on the earth as elsewhere; and there is no conception there of the ages such as Krita or Treta.
In each of these regions, there are seven great mountain ranges, and from them, O best of twice-born, hundreds of rivers arise.

From here, people attain heaven by merit, or, departing from righteousness, they go to animal birth or to hell, O sage.
From here, heaven, liberation, the intermediate, and the final states are reached; truly, for mortals, the land of action is not established elsewhere.
O best of sages, in this land of Bhārata there are nine regions: Indradvīpa, Kaseru, Tāmraparṇī, Gabhastimān,

Nāgadvīpa, Sāmyaka, Gandharva, and Cāruṇa; and this, the ninth, is the island encircled by the ocean.
This island stretches a thousand yojanas from south to north; at its eastern end dwell the Kirātas, and at its western end the Yavanas.
In the middle, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras live in their respective regions, engaged in worship, warfare, trade, and other occupations.
The rivers Śatadrū and Candrabhāgā, and others, arise from the foot of the Himalayas; and those like Vedasmṛti and Mukhā originate from the Pāriyātra mountains, O sage.
The Narmadā and Murasā rivers, and others, flow from the Vindhya mountains; Tāpi, Payoṣṇī, Nirvindhyā, and Prasūkhā arise from the Ṛkṣa range.

The Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Kṛṣṇaveṇī, and other rivers are said to spring from the foot of the Sahya mountains, and are known to remove the fear of sin.
Kṛtamālā, Tāmraparṇī, and Prasūkhā arise from the Malaya mountains; Trisāmā, Carṣikulyā, and others are said to originate from Mahendra.
Ṛṣikulyā, Kumārā, and others arise from the foot of Śuktimān; all these rivers have many tributaries, and there are thousands of other rivers as well.
Among these are the people of the Kurus, the Panchalas, the Madhyadesha, and others; as well as those from the eastern regions and elsewhere, who dwell wherever they desire in various forms.
The Pundras, Kalingas, Magadhas, and all those from the southern regions; likewise the Aparantas, Saurashtras, Shuras, Abhiras, and Arbudas.

The Madrakas, Ramas, Ambasthas, and others such as the Parasikas; all these drink the waters and always live together, O noble one, in regions crowded with joyful and prosperous people nearby.
In this land of Bharata, O great sage, there are four yugas: Krita, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali; elsewhere, there are none.
Here, ascetics practice austerities and sacrificers perform offerings; here, gifts are given with reverence for the sake of the next world.
In Jambudvipa, the Purusha of sacrifice is worshipped by men through sacrifices; but in other dvipas, the sacrificial Vishnu is worshipped differently.
Even here, O great sage, Bharata is the foremost in Jambudvipa, for this is the land of action, while the others are lands of enjoyment.

Those who renounce actions and their desired fruits to Vishnu, the Supreme Self, and, having attained the greatness of action, merge into Him—those pure ones truly go.

We do not know where we will go when the karma that leads to heaven is exhausted and the body falls away; truly blessed are those humans in Bharata who are not deprived of their senses.
