निषधः पारिपात्रश्च मर्य्यादापर्व्वतावुभौ । मेरोः परिचमदिगभागे यता पूर्व्वौ तथा स्थितौ
Niṣadha and Pāriśātra are both boundary mountains; they are placed on the sides of Meru, just as the eastern ones are situated.
त्रिश्वृह्गो जारुधिश्चैव उत्तरौ वर्षपर्व्वतौ । पूर्व्वपश्वायतावेतावर्णवान्तर्व्यवस्थितौ
Triśṛṅga and Jārudhi are the northern boundary mountains; they are situated to the east and west, positioned in between.
इत्येते मुनिवर्य्योक्ता मर्य्यादापर्व्वतास्तव । जठराद्याः स्थिता मेरोस्तेषां द्रौ द्रौ चतुर्दिशम्
Thus, O best of sages, these boundary mountains beginning with Jaṭhara are established around Meru in all four directions.
मैरोश्चतुर्दिशं ये तु प्रोक्ताः केसरपर्व्वताः । शीतान्ताद्या मुने ! तेषामतीव हि मनोरमाः
Those mountains called Kesara, which are said to be on all four sides of Meru, beginning with Śītānta, are exceedingly beautiful, O sage.
शैलानामन्तरे द्रोण्यः सिद्धचारणसेविताः । सुरम्याणि तथा तासु काननानि पुराणि च
In the valleys among the mountains, frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas, there are delightful ancient forests.
लक्ष्मी-विष्णवग्निसूर्य्यादिदेवानां मुनिसत्तम् । तास्वायतनवर्षाणि जुष्टानि वरकिन्नरैः
O best of sages, in those regions are the sacred abodes of Lakṣmī, Viṣṇu, Agni, Sūrya, and other gods, enjoyed by noble Kinnaras.
गन्घर्व्वयक्षरक्षांसि तथा दैतेयदानवाः । क्रीड़न्ति तासु रम्यासु शैलद्रोणीष्वहर्निशम्
Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, as well as Daityas and Dānavas, sport day and night in those charming mountain valleys.
भौमा ह्येते स्मृताः स्वर्गा धर्म्मिणामालया मुने । नैतेषु पापकर्म्मणो यान्ति जन्मशतैरपि
These are considered earthly heavens, O sage, abodes of the righteous; those who perform evil deeds do not reach them, even in hundreds of births.
भद्राश्वे भगवान् विष्णुरास्ते हयशिरा द्विज । वराहः केतुमाले तु भारते कूर्म्मरूपधृक्
In Bhadrāśva, the blessed Viṣṇu abides as Hayagrīva, O twice-born; in Ketumāla as Varāha, and in Bhārata as Kūrma.
मत्स्यरूपश्व गोविन्दः कुरुष्वास्ते जनार्द्दनः । विश्वरूपेण सर्व्वत्र सर्व्वः सर्वत्रगो हरिः
Govinda dwells in Kuru in the form of a fish, O Janārdana; Hari, in his universal form, is present everywhere, pervading all.
सर्व्वस्याधारभूतोऽसौ मैत्रेयास्तेऽखिलात्मकः । यानि किम्पुरुषादीनि वर्षाण्यष्टौ महामुने । न तेषु शोको नायासो नोद्वेगः क्षुद्भयादिकम्
O Maitreya, that One who is the foundation of all, who pervades everything, supports the eight regions such as Kimpurusha and others, O great sage. In those regions, there is no sorrow, no toil, nor any disturbance from hunger, fear, or the like.
सुस्थाः प्रजा निरातङ्काः सर्व्वदुःखविवर्ज्जिताः । दशद्वादशवर्षाणां सहस्त्राणि स्थिरायुषः
The people there are healthy, free from trouble, and untouched by any kind of suffering; their lives are steady, lasting for ten or twelve thousand years.
न तेषु वर्षते देवो भौमान्यम्भांसि तेषु वै । कृत-त्रेतादिका नैव तेषु स्थानेषु कल्पना
In those regions, the gods do not send rain, nor is there water on the earth as elsewhere; and there is no conception there of the ages such as Krita or Treta.
सर्व्वेष्वेतेषु वर्षेषु सप्त सप्त कुलाचलाः । नद्यश्व शतशस्तेभ्यः प्रसूता या द्विजोत्तम
In each of these regions, there are seven great mountain ranges, and from them, O best of twice-born, hundreds of rivers arise.
श्रीपराशर उवाच उत्तरं यत्समुद्रस्य हिमाद्रेश्चैव दक्षिणम् । वर्षं तद्भारतं नाम भारती यत्र सन्ततिः ॥ २,३.
Śrī Parāśara said: The land that lies north of the ocean and south of the Himalayas is called Bhārata, where the descendants of Bharata dwell.
नवयोजनसाहस्रो विस्तारोस्य महामुने । कर्मभूमिरियं स्वर्गमपवर्गं च गच्छताम् ॥ २,३.
O great sage, its breadth is nine thousand yojanas. This is the land of action, where people attain heaven or liberation.
महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षपर्वतः । विन्ध्यश्च पारीयात्रश्च सप्तात्र कुलपर्वताः ॥ २,३.
Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, Ṛkṣa, Vindhya, and Pāriyātra—these are the seven principal mountain ranges here.
अतः संप्राप्यते स्वर्गो सुक्तिमस्मात्प्रयान्ति वै । तिर्यक्त्वं नरकं चापि यान्त्यतः पुरुषा मुने ॥ २,३.
From here, people attain heaven by merit, or, departing from righteousness, they go to animal birth or to hell, O sage.
इतः स्वर्गश्च मोक्षश्च मध्यं चान्तश्च गम्यते । न ख्लवन्यत्र मर्त्यानां कर्मभूमौ विधीयते ॥ २,३.
From here, heaven, liberation, the intermediate, and the final states are reached; truly, for mortals, the land of action is not established elsewhere.
भारतस्यास्य वर्षस्य नवभादान्नशामय । इद्रद्वीपः कसेरुश्च ताम्रपर्णां गभस्तिमान् ॥ २,३.
O best of sages, in this land of Bhārata there are nine regions: Indradvīpa, Kaseru, Tāmraparṇī, Gabhastimān,
नागद्वीपस्तथा साम्यो गन्धर्वस्त्वथ चारुणः । अयं तु नवमस्तषां द्वीपः सागारसंवृतः ॥ २,३.
Nāgadvīpa, Sāmyaka, Gandharva, and Cāruṇa; and this, the ninth, is the island encircled by the ocean.
योजनानां सहस्रं तु द्वीपोयं दक्षिणोत्तरात् । पूर्वे किराता यस्यान्ते पश्चिमे यवनाः स्थिताः ॥ २,३.
This island stretches a thousand yojanas from south to north; at its eastern end dwell the Kirātas, and at its western end the Yavanas.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या मध्ये शब्द्राश्च भागशः । इज्यायुधवणिज्याद्यैर्वर्तयन्तो व्यवस्थिताः ॥ २,३.
In the middle, Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras live in their respective regions, engaged in worship, warfare, trade, and other occupations.
शतद्रूचन्द्रभागाद्या हिमयत्पादनिर्गताः । वेदस्मृतिमुखाद्याश्च पारीयात्रोद्भवा मुने ॥ २,३.
The rivers Śatadrū and Candrabhāgā, and others, arise from the foot of the Himalayas; and those like Vedasmṛti and Mukhā originate from the Pāriyātra mountains, O sage.
नर्मदा मुरसाद्याश्च नद्यो विन्ध्याद्रिनिर्गताः । तापीपयोष्णीनिर्विन्ध्या प्रसूखा ऋक्षसंभवाः ॥ २,३.
The Narmadā and Murasā rivers, and others, flow from the Vindhya mountains; Tāpi, Payoṣṇī, Nirvindhyā, and Prasūkhā arise from the Ṛkṣa range.
गोदावरी भीमरथी कृष्णवेण्यादिकास्तथा । सह्यपादोद्भवा नद्यः स्मृताः पापभयापहाः ॥ २,३.
The Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Kṛṣṇaveṇī, and other rivers are said to spring from the foot of the Sahya mountains, and are known to remove the fear of sin.
कृतमाला ताम्रपर्णिप्रसुखा मलयोद्भवाः । त्रिसामा चर्षिकुल्याद्या महेन्द्रप्रभवाः स्मृताः ॥ २,३.
Kṛtamālā, Tāmraparṇī, and Prasūkhā arise from the Malaya mountains; Trisāmā, Carṣikulyā, and others are said to originate from Mahendra.
ऋषिकुल्याकुमाराद्याः शुक्तिमत्पादसम्भवाः । आसां नद्य उपानद्यः सन्त्यन्याश्च सहस्रशः ॥ २,३.
Ṛṣikulyā, Kumārā, and others arise from the foot of Śuktimān; all these rivers have many tributaries, and there are thousands of other rivers as well.
तास्विमे कुरुपाञ्चाला मध्यदेशादयो जनाः । पूर्वदेशादिकाश्चैव कामरूपनिवासिनः ॥ २,३.
Among these are the people of the Kurus, the Panchalas, the Madhyadesha, and others; as well as those from the eastern regions and elsewhere, who dwell wherever they desire in various forms.
पुण्ड्राः कलिङ्गा मगधा दक्षिणाद्याश्च सर्वशः । तथापरान्ताः सौराष्ट्राः शूराभीरास्तथार्बुदाः ॥ २,३.
The Pundras, Kalingas, Magadhas, and all those from the southern regions; likewise the Aparantas, Saurashtras, Shuras, Abhiras, and Arbudas.
