सवनं पुष्करद्वीपे राजानं समकारयत
He established Savana as king of the Puṣkara continent.
जम्बूद्वीपेश्वरो यस्तु आग्नीध्रो मुनिसत्तम । तस्य पुत्रा बभुवुस्ते प्रजापतिसमा नव
Āgnīdhra, O best of sages, became the lord of Jambūdvīpa; he had nine sons, equal to Prajāpati.
नाभिः किम्पुरुषश्वे वै हरिवर्ष इलावृतः । रम्यो हिरण्वान् षष्ठश्च कुरुर्भद्राश्व एव च
They were Nābhi, Kimpuruṣa, Harivarṣa, Ilāvṛta, Ramya, Hiraṇvān, the sixth was Kuru, and also Bhadrāśva.
केतुमालस्तथैवान्यः साधुचेष्टो नृपोऽभवत् । जम्बूद्रीपविभागांश्च तषां विप्र निशामय
Another was Ketumāla, a king of virtuous conduct; now, O brāhmaṇa, listen to the divisions of Jambūdvīpa among them.
पित्रा दत्तं हिमाह्वन्तु वर्षं नाभेस्तु दक्षिणम् । हेमकूटं तथा वर्षं ददौ किम्पुरुषाय सः
The southern region called Himāhvān was given by their father to Nābhi; likewise, he gave the region called Hemakūṭa to Kimpuruṣa.
तृतीयं नैषधं वर्षं हरिवर्षाय दत्तवान । इलावृताय प्रददौ मैरुर्यत्र तु मध्यगः
He gave the third region, Naiṣadha, to Harivarṣa; to Ilāvṛta he gave Meru, which lies in the center.
नीलाचलाश्वितं वर्षं रम्याय प्रददौ पिता । श्वेतं तदुत्तरं वर्षं पित्रा दत्तं हिरण्वते
He gave the region at the foot of Nīla mountain to Ramya; the region to the north, called Śveta, was given by their father to Hiraṇvān.
यदुत्तरं श्वृङ्गवतो वर्षं तत् कुरवे ददौ । मेरोः पूर्व्वेणा यद् वर्षं भद्राश्वाय प्रदत्तवान्
The region north of Śṛṅgavān was given to Kuru; and the region east of Meru was given to Bhadrāśva.
गन्धमादनवर्षन्तु केतुमालाय दत्तवान । इत्येतानि ददौ तेभ्यः पुत्रेभ्यः स नरेश्वरः
He gave the region of Gandhamadana to Ketumala; thus, that lord of men allotted these lands to his sons.
वर्षेष्वेतेषु तान् पुत्रानभिषितच्य स भूमिपः । शालग्रामं महापुण्यं मैत्रेय तपसे ययौ
Having installed his sons in these regions, the king went to the highly sacred Shalagrama for ascetic practice, O Maitreya.
यानि किंपुरुषादीनि वर्षाण्यष्टौ महामुने। तेषां स्वाभाविकी सिद्धिः सुखप्राया ह्ययत्नतः
O great sage, in those eight regions beginning with Kimpurusha, their perfection is natural, and happiness is attained effortlessly.
विपर्य्ययो न तेष्वस्ति जरामृत्युभयं न च । धर्म्माधर्म्मौ न तेष्वास्तां नोत्तमाधममध्यमाः
They do not experience opposites, nor are they subject to old age or death; righteousness and unrighteousness do not exist among them, nor distinctions of superior, inferior, or middling.
न तेष्वस्ति युगावस्था क्षेत्रेष्वष्टासु सर्व्वदा । हिमाह्वयं तु वै वर्षं नाभेरासीन्महात्मनः
There is no division of ages among them in those eight regions at any time; but the region called Himahvaya belonged to the great-souled Nabhi.
तस्यर्षभोऽभवत् पुत्रो मेरुदेव्यां महाद्युतिः । ऋषभाद् भरतो जज्ञ ज्येष्ठःपुत्रशतस्य सः
His son, shining greatly, was Rishabha, born from Merudevi; from Rishabha was born Bharata, the eldest of a hundred sons.
कृत्वा राज्यं स्वधर्म्मेण तथेष्ट्वा विविधान् मखान् । अभिषच्य सुतं ज्येष्ठं भरतं पृथिवीपतिम्
Having ruled the kingdom according to his duty and performed various sacrifices, he installed his eldest son Bharata as lord of the earth.
तपसे स महाभागः पुलस्त्यस्याश्रमं ययौ । वानप्रस्थविधानेन तत्रापि कृतनिश्चयः
That highly fortunate one went to the hermitage of Pulastya for ascetic practice, firmly resolved to follow the way of forest-dwelling.
तपस्तेपे यथान्यायं यदा च स महीपतिः । तपसा कर्शितोऽत्यर्थं कृशो धमनिसन्ततः
He practiced austerities as prescribed, and when that king was greatly emaciated by his penance, his veins standing out from his thinness—
नग्नो वीटां मुखे दत्त्वा वीराध्वानं ततो गतः । ततश्च भारतं वर्षमेतल्लोकेषु गीयते
Naked, placing a strip of cloth in his mouth, he departed on the path of heroes; thus, this region is renowned among the worlds as Bharata.
भरताय यतः पित्रा दत्तं प्रातिष्ठता वनम् । सुमतिर्भरतस्याभूत् पुत्रः परमधार्म्मिकः
Because his father gave it to Bharata when he set out for the forest, O Bharata, Sumati, a supremely righteous son, was born to Bharata.
कृत्वा सम्यग् ददौ तस्मै राज्यमिष्टमखः पिता । पुत्रसंक्रमितश्रीस्तु भरतः स महीपतिः
Having properly performed sacrifices, the father gave the desired kingdom to him; thus, Bharata, the lord of the earth, transferred his prosperity to his son.
योगाभ्यासरतः प्राणान् शालग्रामेऽत्यजन्मुने । अजायत च विप्रोऽसौ योगिनां प्रवरे कुले
Devoted to the practice of yoga, he gave up his life at Shalagrama, O sage; and he was born as a brahmin in the foremost family of yogis.
मैत्रय । तस्य चरितं कथयिष्यामि ते पुनः । सुमतेस्तेजसस्तस्मादिन्द्रद्युम्नो व्यजायत
Maitreya: I will tell you again of his deeds; from that illustrious Sumati was born Indradyumna.
परमेष्ठी ततस्तस्मात् प्रतिहारस्तदन्वयः । प्रतिहर्त्तेति विख्यात उत्पन्नस्तस्य चात्मजः
From him came Parameshthi, and from him Pratihara, his descendant; his son, known as Pratiharta, was born.
भुवस्तस्मात् तथोद्गीथः प्रस्तारस्तत्सुतो विभुः । पृथुस्ततोऽभवन्नक्तो नक्तस्यापि गयः सुतः
From Bhuva came Udgitha, and Prastara, his son, O wise one; from Prithu was born Nakta, and from Nakta, Gaya, his son.
नरो गयस्य तनयस्तत्पुत्रोऽभूद् विराट् ततः । तस्य पुत्रो महावीर्य्यो धीमांस्तस्मादजायत
Nara was the son of Gaya; his son was Virat, and from him was born a son of great strength and intelligence.
महान्तस्तत्सुतश्चाभूनूमनस्युस्तस्य चात्मजः । त्वष्टा त्वष्टुश्च विरजो रजस्तस्याप्यभूत् सुतः
His son was Mahanta, and Umanasyu was his son; Tvashtri was the son of Tvashtri, and Viraja was the son of Raja.
शतजिद्रजसस्तस्य जज्ञ पुत्रशतं मनने । विशगूज्योतिःप्रधानास्ते यैरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः
To Śatajid, the king, were born a hundred sons, foremost among whom were Viśagu and Jyotiḥ; by them these peoples were increased.
तैरिदं भारतं वर्षं नवभेदमलङ्गतम । तेषां वंशप्रसूतैश्च भुक्तेयें भारती पुरा
By them, this land of Bhārata was divided into nine regions; and in ancient times, this Bhāratī was enjoyed by those born in their line.
कृतत्रेतादिसर्गेण युगाख्या ह्म क्सप्ततिः
With the creation of Kṛta, Tretā, and other yugas, the cycles called yugas were established.
एष स्वायम्भुवः सर्गो येनेदं पूरितं जगत् । वाराहे तु मुने ! कल्पे पूर्वमन्वान्तराधिपः
This is the creation of Svāyambhuva, by whom the world was filled; but in the Varāha kalpa, O sage, he was the lord of the previous manvantara.
