Also born were the Nāga Elāputra, Karkoṭa, and Dhanañjaya; and many other venomous serpents, fierce and numerous.
Know that all these, fierce and flesh-eating, born on land, in water, and in the air, are the progeny of Krodhavaśā.

These are the descendants of Kaśyapa, both stationary and moving beings; their sons and grandsons number in the hundreds and thousands.
This, O Brāhmaṇa, is the creation known as the Svārociṣa Manvantara.
In the great Vaivasvata and Vāruṇa Manvantaras, and in the Kṛta age, the creation of beings by the Brahmā named Juhvāna is described here.
In the past, the Grandfather himself appointed the seven sages as his sons, for the protection of Gandharvas, serpents, gods, and Dānavas, O best of beings.
Diti, having lost her sons, sought to please Kaśyapa; she worshipped him properly, O best of ascetics.
He, gratified, offered her a boon, and she chose a son, powerful and mighty, capable of slaying Indra.
The sage granted her the formidable boon, and after bestowing it, Kaśyapa spoke to his wife.
If you, with utmost concentration, purity, and effort, carry the child for a hundred years, your son will slay Indra.
Having spoken thus to the goddess, the sage Kaśyapa united with her; she bore the embryo with great purity.
Knowing that the embryo was destined for his own destruction, Maghavan (Indra), lord of the gods, approached her in humility and served her.
Desiring to enter her womb, Indra waited; when the hundred years were nearly complete, he perceived an opening by his own power.
Diti, without cleansing her feet, entered her bed and fell asleep; Indra entered her womb at that moment.
Wielding the thunderbolt, Indra cut the great embryo into seven parts; as he was struck, the child cried out terribly.
Indra repeatedly said, 'Do not cry!' But the embryo was divided into seven parts, and Indra, enraged, acted again.
With his thunderbolt, the foe-slayer split each part into seven again; thus arose the gods called Maruts, swift as the wind.

Śrī Parāśara said: When that Pṛthu was formerly anointed as king by the great sages, then, in due order, the Lord of the World assigned the sovereignties.
