यत्रानपायी भगवान् ह्टद्यास्ते हरिरीख्वरः । भङ्गो भवति वजूस्य तत्र शूलस्य का कथा
Where the imperishable Lord Hari, the Supreme Lord, himself abides in the heart, even the thunderbolt is broken—what then of the trident?
अपाये तत्र पापैश्च पातिता तत्र याजकैः । तानेव सा जद्यानाशु कृत्या नाशं जगाम ष
There, when evil ones were cast down by the priests, that very destructive force was quickly destroyed.
कृत्यया दह्ममानांस्तान् विलोक्य स महामतिः । त्राहि कृष्णेत्यनन्तेति वदन्नभ्यवपद्यत
Seeing them being burned by the destructive force, that wise one cried out, 'Save me, Krishna! Infinite One!' and took refuge.
सर्व्वव्यापिन् जगद्रपू जगतूस्त्रर्जनार्दन । पाहि विप्रानिमानस्मादू दुःसहान्मन्त्रपावकात्
O all-pervading One, form of the universe, destroyer of the world's afflictions, protect these Brahmins from the unbearable fire of the mantra.
यथा सर्व्वेषुभूतेषु सर्व्वव्यापी जगदूगुरुः । विष्णुरेव तथा सर्व्वे जीवन्त्वेते पुरोहिताः
Just as Vishnu, the all-pervading teacher of the world, dwells in all beings, so too do these priests live by him.
यथा सर्व्वगतं विष्णुं मन्यमानो न पावकम् । चिन्तयाम्यरिपक्षेऽपि जीवन्त्वेते पुरोहिताः
Just as I consider Vishnu to be present everywhere and not the fire, so even among the enemy, I think these priests live by him.
ये हन्तुमागता दत्तं यैर्विषं यैर्हु ताशनः । यैर्द्दिगूगजैरहं क्षुणणो दष्टः सर्पैश्व यैरपि
Those who came to kill me, who gave me poison, who set fire to me, who crushed me with elephants, and who had me bitten by snakes—
तेष्वहं मित्रभावेन समः पापोऽस्मि न ववचित् । तथा तेनाद्य सत्येन जीवन्त्वसुरयाजकाः
Towards them I am equal, regarding them as friends; I do not consider myself sinful. Therefore, by this truth, may these priests of the demons live today.
इत्युक्तास्तेन ते सर्व्वै संस्पृष्टाश्व निरामयाः । समुत्तस्थुर्द्रिजा भूयस्तञ्चोचुः प्रश्वयान्वितम्
Thus addressed by him, all of them, touched by him, became free from illness and rose up again, and the Brahmins spoke to him with humility.
दीर्घायुरप्रतिहत-बलवीर्य्यसमन्वितः । पुत्र-पौत्र-धनैश्वर्य्ययुक्तो वत्स ! भवोत्तम
May you, dear one, be long-lived, endowed with unimpeded strength and vigor, and blessed with sons, grandsons, wealth, and prosperity.
इत्युत्तवा तं ततो गत्वा यथावृत्तं परोहिताः । दैत्यराजाय सकलमाचचक्षु र्महामुने
Having thus spoken, they went and reported everything that had happened to the great sage, to the king of the Daityas.
श्रीपराशर उवाच हिरण्यकशिपुः श्रुत्वा तां कृत्यां वितथीकृताम् । आहूय पुत्रं पप्रच्छ प्रभावस्यास्य कारणम्
Śrī Parāśara said: When Hiraṇyakaśipu heard that the destructive force had been rendered ineffective, he summoned his son and asked the reason for this power.
हिरण्यकशिपुरुवाच । प्रह्लाद सुप्रभावोसि किमेतत्ते विचेष्टितम् । एतन्मंत्रादिजनितमुताहो सहजं तव
Hiraṇyakaśipu said: Prahlāda, you are of great power—what is this that you have done? Is this produced by some mantra or is it innate to you?
श्रीपराशर उवचा। एवं पृष्टस्तदा पित्रा प्रह्लादोऽसुरबालकः । प्रणिपत्य पितुः पादाविदं वचनमब्रवीत्
Śrī Parāśara said: Thus questioned by his father, Prahlāda, the child of the Asuras, bowed at his father's feet and spoke these words.
न मंत्रादिकृतं तात न च नैसर्गिको मम । प्रभाव एष सामान्यो यस्य यस्याच्युतो हृदि
It is not by mantra or such means, father, nor is it my own nature; this power is common to anyone in whose heart the Imperishable One dwells.
अन्येषां यो न पापानि चिन्तयत्यात्मनो यथा । तस्य पापागमस्तात हेत्वभावान्न विद्यते
For one who does not think of others' sins as his own, father, there is no arrival of sin, since there is no cause.
कर्मणा मनसा वाचा परिपीडां करोति यः । तद्बीजं जन्म फलति प्रभूतं तस्य चाशुभम्
Whoever harms others by deed, mind, or speech, for him the seed of that action bears abundant evil fruit at birth.
सोहं न पापमिच्छामि न करोमि वदामि वा । चिन्तयन्सर्वभूतस्थमात्मन्यपि च केशवम्
I neither desire sin, nor do I commit or speak it, for I contemplate Keśava, who dwells in all beings and in my own self.
शारीरं मानसं दुःखं दैवं भूतभवं तथा । सर्वत्र शुभचित्तस्य तस्य मे जायेत कुतः
Physical, mental, divine, and elemental suffering—where could any of these arise for one whose mind is auspicious everywhere?
एवं सर्वेषु भूतेषु भक्तिरव्यभिचारिणी । कर्तव्या पण्डितैर्ज्ञात्वा सर्वभूतमयं हरिम्
Thus, unwavering devotion must be practiced by the wise toward all beings, knowing Hari to be present in all creatures.
श्रीपराशर उवाच । इति श्रुत्वा स दैत्येन्द्र ः! प्रासादशिखरे स्थितः । क्रोधान्धकारितमुखः प्राह दैतेयकिंकरान्
Śrī Parāśara said: Hearing this, the lord of the demons, standing atop the palace, his face darkened by anger, spoke to the demon attendants.
हिरण्यकशिपुरुपाच । दुरात्मा क्षिप्यतामस्मात्प्रासादाच्छतयोजनात् । गिरिपृष्ठे पतत्वस्मिन् शिलाभिन्नाङ्गसंहतिः
Hiraṇyakaśipu said: Cast this wicked child from the palace, a hundred yojanas away; let him fall upon the mountain's summit, his body shattered by the rocks.
ततस्तं चिक्षुपुः सर्वे बालं दैतेयदानवाः । पपात सोप्यधः क्षिप्तो हृदयेनोद्वहह्नरिम्
Then all the Daitya and Dānava demons hurled the boy; thrown down, he fell, carrying Hari in his heart.
पतमानं जगद्धात्री जगद्धातरि केशवे । भक्तियुक्तं दधारैनमुपसंगम्य मेदिनी
As he was falling, the earth, devoted to Keśava, the sustainer of the world, approached and received him, filled with devotion.
ततो विलोक्य तं स्वस्थमविशिर्णास्थिपञ्जरम् । हिरण्यकशिपुः प्राह शम्बरं मायिनां वरम्
Seeing him unharmed, his bones unbroken, Hiraṇyakaśipu spoke to Śambara, the foremost among magicians.
हिरण्यकशिपुरुपाच । नास्माभिः शक्यते हन्तुमसौ दुर्बुद्धिबालकः । मायां वेत्ति भवांस्तस्मान्माययैनं निषूदय
Hiraṇyakaśipu said: We are unable to kill this wicked-minded boy; you know magic, so destroy him by your magic.
शम्बर उवाच। सूदयाम्येव दैत्येन्द्र पश्य मायाबलं मम । सहस्रमत्र मायानां पश्य कोटिशतं तथा
Śambara said: I will indeed destroy him, O lord of the demons; witness the power of my magic—here are a thousand spells, and even a hundred million more.
श्रीपराशर उवाच । ततः स ससृजे मायां प्रह्लादे शम्बरोऽसुरः । विनाशमिच्छन्दुर्बुद्धिः सर्वत्र समदर्शिनि
Śrī Parāśara said: Then Śambara, the demon, created magic against Prahlāda, desiring his destruction, though Prahlāda saw all with equal vision.
समाहितमतिर्भूत्वा शम्बरेपि विमत्सरः । मैत्रेय सोपि प्रह्लादः सस्मार मधुसूदनम्
With his mind composed, free from envy even toward Śambara, Prahlāda, O Maitreya, remembered Madhusūdana.
श्रीपराशर उवाच। ततो भगवता तस्य रक्षार्थं चक्रमुत्तमम् । आजगाम समाज्ञप्तं ज्वालामालि सुदर्शनम्
Śrī Parāśara said: Then, for his protection, the supreme disc, Sudarśana, encircled with flames, arrived, summoned by the Lord.
