The deadly halahala poison, brought by the slayers of the Daitya lord, was consumed and digested by him, whose mind was free from pride and delusion.
He regarded all beings in this world with equal mind, endowed with supreme friendliness, seeing others as himself.
He was righteous, the supreme repository of truth, valor, and other virtues, ever the model for all the virtuous.
Maitreya said: You have recounted the lineage of Manu, O great sage, and also that Vishnu alone is the eternal cause of this world.
And what the Blessed Lord said to Prahlada, the foremost of Daityas—that neither fire burned him, nor weapons harmed him, nor did he abandon his life—
When Prahlada was held in the water, the earth was shaken; bound and tossed about, he was struck by herds of cows.
Even when his body was pressed by mountains, he did not die in former times; you yourself have told of the great might of that wise one.
I wish to hear, O sage, of the incomparable power of that devotee of Vishnu, whose glorious deeds you have described.
For what reason was he struck with weapons by the Daityas, O sage? And why was that righteous one cast into the waters of the ocean?
Why was he pressed by mountains, and for what reason was he seen by great serpents? Why was he thrown from the mountain peak, or into a mass of fire?
And why was he made to lie on the tusk-ground of the elephants of the quarters? For what reason did the asuras set the drying wind upon him?
What sorcery did the Daitya teachers employ there, O sage? And what thousand illusions did Shambara unleash?
Why was the deadly halahala poison given by the slayers of the Daitya lord to that great soul, and how was it digested by him?
All this, O highly fortunate one, I wish to hear—the deeds of the great-souled Prahlada, which reveal his supreme greatness.
There is no wonder in this, for he was not slain by the Daityas; for who, with mind devoted solely to Vishnu, is able to be cast down?
In him, ever devoted to righteousness, intent on the destruction of Keshava's enemies, it is exceedingly difficult for the Daityas, born of his own lineage, to act or even to look upon him.
Since the Daityas attacked that great soul, whose very nature is righteousness, who is devoted to Vishnu and free from envy, you ought to tell me about this.
Even adversaries of great soul do not attack one endowed with such virtues and truthfulness; how much less, then, would birds or other creatures?
Therefore, O best of sages, narrate all this in detail; I wish to hear completely the deeds of the lord of the Daityas.
Parashara said: O Maitreya, listen well to the story of that wise one, Prahlada, the great soul whose conduct was ever noble.
Diti's son, the mighty Hiraṇyakaśipu, once brought the three worlds under his control, empowered by a boon from Brahma.
That Daitya assumed the role of Indra, and he himself became the Sun; the mighty Asura became the Wind, Fire, Lord of Waters, and Soma.
He became the lord of wealth, and he was also Yama, the lord of death; that Asura himself enjoyed all the shares of sacrifice without remainder.
O best of sages, the gods, abandoning their realms in fear, wandered the earth in human form.
Having conquered the three worlds, endowed with the pride of universal sovereignty, he enjoyed his beloved pleasures, praised by the Gandharvas.
At that time, all the Siddhas, Gandharvas, and serpents attended upon the great-souled Hiraṇyakaśipu, who was addicted to drinking.
Some played instruments, others sang, and yet others shouted cries of victory; the Siddhas, filled with joy, performed before the Daitya king.
There, as the Apsaras danced on crystal floors, the Asura, filled with delight, drank wine in a most charming palace.
His son, the illustrious Prahlada by name, went as a child to the house of his teacher and recited his lessons.
Once, that righteous soul went with his teacher before his father, the lord of the Daityas, who was then absorbed in drinking.
