शतं त्वेकं समाख्यातं रुद्राणाममितौजसाम् । काश्यपस्य तु भार्या यास्तासां नामानि मे शृणु । अदितिर्दितिर्दनुश्चैवारिष्टा च सुरसा खसा ॥ १,१५.
A hundred and one Rudras of immeasurable might are also named; now hear from me the names of Kaśyapa's wives: Aditi, Diti, Danu, Ariṣṭā, Surasā, and Khasā.
सुरभिर्विनता चैव ताम्रा क्रोधवशा इरा । कद्रुर्मुनिश्च धर्मज्ञ तदपत्यानि मे शृणु ॥ १,१५.
Surabhi, Vinatā, Tāmrā, Krodhavaśā, Irā, Kadrū, and Munī, O knower of dharma; now hear from me their offspring.
पूर्वमन्वन्तरे श्रेष्ठा द्वादशासन्सुरोत्तमाः । तुषिता नाम तेऽन्योन्यमूचुर्वैवस्वतेन्तरे ॥ १,१५.
In the previous Manvantara, the twelve best of the gods were called the Tuṣitas; in the Vaivasvata Manvantara, they spoke among themselves.
उपस्थितेऽतियशसश्चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः । समवायीकृताः सर्वे समागम्य परस्परम् ॥ १,१५.
When the renowned period of Cākṣuṣa Manu was ending, all of them assembled together.
आगच्छत द्रुतं देवा अदितिं संप्रविश्य वै । मन्वन्तरे प्रसूयामस्तन्नः श्रेयो भवेदिति ॥ १,१५.
They said, 'Come quickly, O gods, let us enter Aditi and be born in the Manvantara; may this be for our welfare.'
एवमुक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः । मारीचात्कश्यपाज्जाता अदित्या दक्षकन्यया ॥ १,१५.
Having spoken thus, all of them, during the period of Cākṣuṣa Manu, were born from Aditi, the daughter of Dakṣa, through Kaśyapa, son of Marīci.
तत्र विष्णुश्च शक्रश्च जज्ञाते पुनरेव हि । अर्यमा चैव धाता च त्वष्टा पूषा तथैव च ॥ १,१५.
There, Viṣṇu and Śakra were born again, as well as Aryaman, Dhātṛ, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Pūṣan.
विवस्वान्सविता चैव मित्रो वरुण एव च । अंशुर्भगश्चातितेजा आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
Vivasvān, Savitṛ, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aṃśa, and Bhaga of great brilliance; these twelve are known as the Ādityas.
चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे पूर्वमासन्ये तुषिताः सुराः । वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे ते वै आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
During the interval of the Cākṣuṣa era, the Tuṣita gods were present before; in the interval of Vaivasvata, those are remembered as the twelve Ādityas.
सप्तविंशति याः प्रोक्ताः सोमपत्न्योथ सुव्रताः । सर्वा नक्षत्रयोगिन्यस्तन्नाम्नश्चैव ताः स्मृताः । तासामपत्यान्यभवन्दीप्तान्यमिततेजसाम् ॥ १,१५.
The twenty-seven who are spoken of as the wives of Soma, steadfast in virtue, all are associated with the stars and are remembered by those names; their offspring were radiant, possessing immeasurable brilliance.
अरिष्टनेमिपत्नीनामपत्यानीह षोडश ॥ १,१५.
Here, there are sixteen offspring of the wives of Ariṣṭanemi.
बहुपुत्रस्य विदुषश्चतस्त्रोविद्युतः स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
Of Bahuputra, the learned one, four are remembered as Vidyuts (lightning).
प्रत्यङ्गिरसजाः श्रेष्ठा ऋचो ब्रह्मर्षिसत्कृताः ॥ १,१५.
The best among those born from Pratyangiras are the Ṛc verses, honored by the Brahmarṣis.
कृशाश्वस्य तु देवर्षेर्देवप्रहरणाः स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
Of Kṛśāśva, the divine sage, the Devapraharaṇas are remembered.
एते युगसहस्रान्ते जायन्ते पुनरेव हि । सर्वे देवगणास्तात त्रयस्त्रिंशत्तु छन्दजाः । तेषामपीह सततं निरोधोत्पत्तिरुच्यते ॥ १,१५.
At the end of a thousand ages, all these groups of gods are born again, O dear one; thirty-three are born from the Vedic hymns, and for them, constant cessation and arising are spoken of here.
यथा सूर्यस्य मैत्रेय उदयास्तमनाविह । एवं देवनिकायास्ते सम्भवन्ति युगेयुगे ॥ १,१५.
Just as, O Maitreya, the sun rises and sets here, so too these groups of gods come into being in each age.
दित्या पुत्रद्वयं जज्ञे कश्यपादिति नः श्रुतम् । हिरण्यकशिपुश्चैव हिरण्याक्षश्च दुर्जयः ॥ १,१५.
It is heard that Diti bore two sons to Kaśyapa: Hiraṇyakaśipu and Hiraṇyākṣa, both difficult to conquer.
सिंहिका चाभवत्कन्या विप्रचित्तेः परिग्रहः ॥ १,१५.
And Siṃhikā became the daughter, taken as wife by Vipracitti.
हिरण्यकशिपोः पुत्राश्चात्वारः प्रथितौजसः । अनुह्लादश्च ह्लादश्च प्रह्लादश्चैव बुद्धिमान् । संह्लादश्च महावीर्या दैत्यवंशविवर्धनाः ॥ १,१५.
Hiraṇyakaśipu had four sons, renowned for their strength: Anuhlāda, Hlāda, Prahlāda the wise, and Saṃhlāda, all of great valor, who increased the lineage of the Daityas.
तेषां मध्ये महाभाग सर्वत्र समदृग्वाशी । प्रह्लादः परमां भक्तिं च उवाच जनार्दने ॥ १,१५.
Among them, Prahlāda, greatly fortunate, with equal vision everywhere, spoke supreme devotion to Janārdana.
दैत्येन्द्रदीपितो वह्निः सर्वाङ्गोपचितो द्विज । न ददाह च यं विप्र वासुदेव हृदि स्थिते ॥ १,१५.
The fire, kindled by the king of the Daityas and applied to all his limbs, did not burn him, O twice-born, for Vāsudeva dwelled in his heart.
महार्णवान्तः सलिले स्थितस्य चलतो मही । चचाल चलता यस्य पाशबद्धस्य धीमतः ॥ १,१५.
When placed in the moving waters of the great ocean, the earth trembled as he, wise and bound by ropes, moved.
न भिन्नं विविधैः शस्त्रैर्यस्य दैत्येन्द्रपातितैः । शरीरमद्रिकठिनं सर्वत्राच्युतचेतसः ॥ १,१५.
His body, hard as a mountain, was not broken by various weapons hurled by the king of the Daityas, for everywhere his mind was fixed on Acyuta.
विषानलोज्ज्वलमुखा यस्य दैत्यप्रचोदिताः । नान्ताय सर्पपतयो बभूवुरुरुतेजसः ॥ १,१५.
The serpent chiefs, urged by the Daityas, with mouths blazing with poison-fire, could not bring an end to him, for he was of immense energy.
शैलैराक्रान्तदेहोपि यः स्मरन्पुरुषोत्तमम् । तत्याज नात्मनः प्राणान् विष्णुस्मरणदंशितः ॥ १,१५.
Even when his body was crushed by mountains, he, remembering the Supreme Person, did not abandon his own life, bitten by the remembrance of Viṣṇu.
पतन्तमुच्चादवनिर्यमुपेत्य महामतिम् । दधार दैत्यपतिना क्षिप्तं स्वर्गनिवासिना ॥ १,१५.
When he was cast down from a high place, the great-minded one was supported by the king of the Daityas, who had been thrown by the dweller of heaven.
यस्य सशोषको वायुर्देहे दैत्येन्द्रयोजितः । अवाप संक्षयं सद्यश्चित्तस्थे मधुसूदने ॥ १,१५.
The drying wind, set in motion within his body by the lord of the Daityas, at once met its end when his mind was fixed on Madhusudana.
विषाणभङ्गमुन्मत्ता मदहानिं च दिग्गजाः । यस्य वक्षःस्थले प्राप्ता दैत्येन्द्रपरिणामिताः ॥ १,१५.
The mad elephants of the quarters, transformed by the lord of the Daityas, who came upon his chest, suffered the breaking of their tusks and the loss of their pride.
यस्य चोत्पादिता कृत्या दैत्यराजपुरोहितैः । बभूव नान्ताय पुरा गोविन्दासक्तचेतसः ॥ १,१५.
The destructive sorcery conjured by the Daitya king’s priests, in former times, could not bring about the end of him whose mind was attached to Govinda.
शम्बरस्य च मायानां सहस्रमतिमायिनः । यस्मिन्प्रयुक्तं चक्रेण कृष्णस्य वितथिकृतम् ॥ १,१५.
The thousand illusions of Shambara, the master of magic, which were unleashed against Krishna, were rendered ineffective by his discus.
