द्वे चैव बहुपुत्राय द्वे चैवाङ्गिरसे तथा । द्वे कृशाश्वाय विदुषे तासां नामानि मे शृणु ॥ १,१५.
He gave two to Bahuputra, two likewise to Angiras, and two to the learned Krishashva; hear from me their names.
अरुन्धती वसुर्जामिर्लङ्घा भानुमरुत्वती । संकल्पा च मुहूर्ता च साध्या विश्वा च तादृशी । धर्मपत्न्यो दशत्वेतास्तास्वपत्यानि मे शृणु । विश्वेदेवास्तु विश्वायाः साध्या साध्यानजायत । मरुत्वत्यां सरुत्वन्तो वसोश्च वसवः स्मृता ॥ १,१५.
Arundhati, Vasu, Jami, Laghna, Bhanu, Marutvati, Sankalpa, Muhurta, Sadhya, and Vishva—these are the ten wives of Dharma. Hear from me their offspring: the Visvedevas were born from Vishva, the Sadhyas from Sadhya, the Maruts from Marutvati, and the Vasus from Vasu.
भानोस्तु भानवः पुत्रा मुहूर्तायां मुहूर्तजाः ॥ १,१५.
The sons of Bhanu are called the Bhanuvas, and those of Muhurta are the Muhurtajas.
लङ्घायाश्चैव घोषोथ नागवीथी तु जामिता ॥ १,१५.
From Laghna came Ghosha, and from Jami, Nagavithi.
पृथिवीविषयं सर्वमरुन्धत्याम जायत । संकल्पायास्तु सर्वात्मा जज्ञे संकल्प एव हि ॥ १,१५.
All things pertaining to the earth were born from Arundhati; and from Sankalpa, the universal soul, Sankalpa himself was born.
ये त्वनेकवसुप्राणदेवा ज्योतिः पुरोगमाः । वसवोष्टौ समाख्यातास्तेषां वक्ष्यामि विस्तरम् ॥ १,१५.
Those who are the eight Vasus, gods with many forms and life, led by light—I will now describe them in detail.
आपो ध्रुवश्च सोमश्च धर्मश्चैवानिलोऽनलः । प्रत्यूषश्च प्रभासश्च वसवो नामभिः स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
Water, Dhruva, Soma, Dharma, Anila, Anala, Pratyusha, and Prabhasa—these are the Vasus, known by their names.
आपस्य पुत्रो वैतण्डः श्रमः शान्तोऽध्वनिस्तथा । ध्रुवस्य पुत्रो भगवान्कालो लोकप्रकालनः ॥ १,१५.
The sons of Apa are Vaitanda, Shrama, Shanta, and Adhvani; the son of Dhruva is the illustrious Kala, who reveals the worlds.
सोमस्य भगवान्वर्चो वर्चस्वी येन जायते ॥ १,१५.
The son of Soma is the illustrious Varco, from whom brilliance is born.
धर्मस्य पुत्रो द्रविणो हुतहव्यवहस्तथा । मनोहरायां शिशिरः प्राणोथ रवणस्तथा ॥ १,१५.
The son of Dharma is Dravina, and Hutahavyavaha; from Manohara are born Shishira, Prana, and likewise Ravana.
अनिलस्य शिवा भार्या तस्याः पुत्रो मनोजवः । अविज्ञातगतिश्चैव द्वौ पुत्रावनिलस्य तु ॥ १,१५.
Śivā is the wife of Anila; their two sons are Manojava and Avijñātagati.
अग्निपुत्रः कुमारस्तु शरस्तम्बे व्यजायत । तस्य शाखो विशाखश्च नैगमेयश्च पृष्ठजाः ॥ १,१५.
The son of Agni is Kumāra, who was born from a cluster of reeds; his followers are Śākha, Viśākha, and Naigameya, who were born after him.
अपत्यं कृत्तिकानां तु कार्त्तिकेय इति स्मृतः ॥ १,१५.
The child of the Kṛttikās is known as Kārttikeya.
प्रत्यूषस्य विदुः पुत्रं ऋषि नाम्नाथ देवलम् । द्वौ पुत्रौ देवलस्यापि क्षमावन्तौ मनीषिणौ ॥ १,१५.
It is said that Pratyūṣa's son was the sage named Devala; Devala himself had two wise sons, Kṣamāvat and another.
बृहस्पतेस्तु भगिनी वरस्त्री ब्रह्मचारिणी । योगसिद्धा जगत्कृत्स्नमसक्ता विचरत्युत । प्रभासस्य तु सा भार्या वसूनामष्टमस्य तु ॥ १,१५.
Bṛhaspati's sister was a noble woman, a celibate, perfected in yoga, unattached, who wandered the whole world; she became the wife of Prabhāsa, the eighth of the Vasus.
विश्वकर्मा महाभागस्तस्यां जज्ञे प्रजापतिः । कर्ता शिल्पसहस्राणां त्रिदशानां च वार्धकिः ॥ १,१५.
From her was born Viśvakarmā, the illustrious progenitor, the maker of a thousand arts and the architect of the gods.
भूषणानां च सर्वेषां कर्ताशिल्पवतां वरः । यः सर्वैषां विमानानि देवतानां चकार ह । मनुष्याश्चोपजीवन्ति यस्य शिल्पं महात्मनः ॥ १,१५.
He is the maker of all ornaments, the foremost among artisans; he built all the flying palaces of the gods, and humans also live by his great skill.
अजैकपादहिर्बुध्न्यस्त्वष्टा रुद्रश्च वीर्यवान् । त्वष्टुश्चाप्यात्मजः पुत्रो विश्वरूपो महातपाः ॥ १,१५.
Ajaikapāda, Ahibudhnya, Tvaṣṭṛ, and the mighty Rudra; and Tvaṣṭṛ's own son was Viśvarūpa, great in austerity.
हरश्च बहुरूपश्च त्र्यम्बकश्चापराजितः । वृषाकपिश्च शम्भुश्च कपर्दीरैवतः स्मृतः ॥ १,१५.
Hara, Bahurūpa, Tryambaka, Aparājita, Vṛṣākapi, Śambhu, Kapardī, and Raivata are remembered.
मृगव्याधश्च शर्वश्च कपाली च महामुने । एकादशैते कथिता रुद्रास्त्रिभुवनेश्वराः ॥ १,१५.
Mṛgavyādha, Śarva, and Kapālī, O great sage; these eleven are called the Rudras, lords of the three worlds.
शतं त्वेकं समाख्यातं रुद्राणाममितौजसाम् । काश्यपस्य तु भार्या यास्तासां नामानि मे शृणु । अदितिर्दितिर्दनुश्चैवारिष्टा च सुरसा खसा ॥ १,१५.
A hundred and one Rudras of immeasurable might are also named; now hear from me the names of Kaśyapa's wives: Aditi, Diti, Danu, Ariṣṭā, Surasā, and Khasā.
सुरभिर्विनता चैव ताम्रा क्रोधवशा इरा । कद्रुर्मुनिश्च धर्मज्ञ तदपत्यानि मे शृणु ॥ १,१५.
Surabhi, Vinatā, Tāmrā, Krodhavaśā, Irā, Kadrū, and Munī, O knower of dharma; now hear from me their offspring.
पूर्वमन्वन्तरे श्रेष्ठा द्वादशासन्सुरोत्तमाः । तुषिता नाम तेऽन्योन्यमूचुर्वैवस्वतेन्तरे ॥ १,१५.
In the previous Manvantara, the twelve best of the gods were called the Tuṣitas; in the Vaivasvata Manvantara, they spoke among themselves.
उपस्थितेऽतियशसश्चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः । समवायीकृताः सर्वे समागम्य परस्परम् ॥ १,१५.
When the renowned period of Cākṣuṣa Manu was ending, all of them assembled together.
आगच्छत द्रुतं देवा अदितिं संप्रविश्य वै । मन्वन्तरे प्रसूयामस्तन्नः श्रेयो भवेदिति ॥ १,१५.
They said, 'Come quickly, O gods, let us enter Aditi and be born in the Manvantara; may this be for our welfare.'
एवमुक्त्वा तु ते सर्वे चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे मनोः । मारीचात्कश्यपाज्जाता अदित्या दक्षकन्यया ॥ १,१५.
Having spoken thus, all of them, during the period of Cākṣuṣa Manu, were born from Aditi, the daughter of Dakṣa, through Kaśyapa, son of Marīci.
तत्र विष्णुश्च शक्रश्च जज्ञाते पुनरेव हि । अर्यमा चैव धाता च त्वष्टा पूषा तथैव च ॥ १,१५.
There, Viṣṇu and Śakra were born again, as well as Aryaman, Dhātṛ, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Pūṣan.
विवस्वान्सविता चैव मित्रो वरुण एव च । अंशुर्भगश्चातितेजा आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
Vivasvān, Savitṛ, Mitra, Varuṇa, Aṃśa, and Bhaga of great brilliance; these twelve are known as the Ādityas.
चाक्षुषस्यान्तरे पूर्वमासन्ये तुषिताः सुराः । वैवस्वतेऽन्तरे ते वै आदित्या द्वादश स्मृताः ॥ १,१५.
During the interval of the Cākṣuṣa era, the Tuṣita gods were present before; in the interval of Vaivasvata, those are remembered as the twelve Ādityas.
सप्तविंशति याः प्रोक्ताः सोमपत्न्योथ सुव्रताः । सर्वा नक्षत्रयोगिन्यस्तन्नाम्नश्चैव ताः स्मृताः । तासामपत्यान्यभवन्दीप्तान्यमिततेजसाम् ॥ १,१५.
The twenty-seven who are spoken of as the wives of Soma, steadfast in virtue, all are associated with the stars and are remembered by those names; their offspring were radiant, possessing immeasurable brilliance.
