समायवरदांश्चण्डान् प्रवृद्धबलिनोदरान् । हस्तियुद्धे प्रियान्नागान् विद्धि तस्य कुलोद्भवान् ॥ ८.
Know that in his lineage are born elephants with equal gifts, fierce, greatly powerful bellies, and beloved in elephant combat.
एतान् देवासुरे युद्धे जयार्थे जगृहुः सुराः। कृतार्थैश्च विसृष्टास्तैः पूर्वोक्ताः प्रययुर्दिशः ॥ ८.
The gods took these in the battle with the demons for victory; having achieved their purpose, those previously mentioned were sent to the directions.
एतेषामन्वये जातान् विनीतांस्त्रिदशा ददुः । अङ्गाय लोमपादाय सूत्रकाराय वै द्विपान् ॥ ८.
From their lineage, the gods gave well-trained elephants to Aṅga, Lomapāda, and Sūtrakāra.
द्विरदो द्विरदाभ्याञ्च हस्ताद्धस्ती करात्करी। वरणाद्वारणो दन्ती दन्ताभ्यां गर्जनाद्गजः ॥ ८.
An elephant is called dvirada from two teeth, hastī from the hand, karī from the trunk, varaṇa from protection, dantī from the tusks, and gaja from roaring.
कुञ्जरः कुञ्जचारित्वान्नागो नगविरोधतः । मतङ्गादिति मातङ्गो द्विपो द्वाभ्यामपि स्मृतः। सामजः सामजातत्वादिति निर्वचनक्रमः ॥ ८.
Kuñjara is from wandering, nāga from opposing mountains, mataṅga from the sage Mataṅga, dvipa from two, and sāmaja from being born of Sāmna—thus is the order of their names.
एषां जिह्वापरावृत्तिरिवाक्तं ह्यग्निशापजम्। बलस्यानवतो या तु या चैषां गूढमुष्कता। उभयं दन्तिनामेतत्स्वयम्भूसूरशापजम् ॥ ८.
Their tongues turn back, as if spoken by the curse of Agni; the lack of strength and the concealed penis among them—both are due to the curse of Svayambhū and the gods.
देवदानवगन्धर्वाः पिशाचोरगराक्षसाः। कन्यासु जाता दिङ्नागैर्नानासात्त्वास्ततो गजाः ॥ ८.
Gods, demons, gandharvas, piśācas, serpents, and rākṣasas—among their daughters, elephants of various origins were born.
सम्भूतिश्च प्रभूतिश्च नामनिर्वचनं तथा। एतद्गजानां विज्ञेयं येषां राजा विभावसुः ॥ ८.
Origin and manifestation, as well as the explanation of names—this should be understood regarding elephants whose king is Vibhāvasu.
कौशिकाद्याः समुद्रात्तु गङ्गायास्तदनन्तरम्। अञ्जनस्यैकमूलस्य प्राच्यान्नागवनन्तु तत् ॥ ८.
The Kauśikas and others, from the ocean, then from the Ganges; from Añjana's single root, the eastern elephant forest arose.
उत्तरा तस्य विन्ध्यस्य गङ्गाया दक्षिणञ्च यत्। गङ्गोद्भेदात्करूषेभ्यः सुप्रतीकस्य तद्वनम् ॥ ८.
North of the Vindhya and south of the Ganges, from the Ganges' emergence in Karūṣa, is the forest of Supratīka.
अपरेणोत्कलाच्चैव ह्यावेदिभ्यश्च पञ्चमम्। एकभूतात्मनोस्यैतद्वामनस्य वनं स्मृतम् ॥ ८.
With another boundary, from the north and also from the Āvedis, the fifth, this is remembered as the forest of the dwarf-bodied one.
अपरेण तु लौहित्यमासिन्धोः पश्चिमेन तु। यमस्यैतद्वनं प्रोक्तमनुपर्वतमेव तत् ॥ ८.

भूतिर्विजज्ञे भूतांश्च रुद्रस्यानुचरान् प्रभोः। स्थूलान् कृशांश्च दीर्घांश्च वामनान् ह्रस्वकान् समान् ॥ ८.
Bhūti gave birth to beings and to the attendants of Rudra, the Lord—some massive, some thin, some tall, some dwarfish, some short, some of equal stature.
लम्बकर्णान् प्रलम्बोष्ठान् लम्बजिह्वास्तनोदरान्। एकरूपान् द्विरूपांश्च लम्बस्फिक्स्थूलपिण्डिकान् ॥ ८.
With pendant ears, hanging lips, drooping tongues, and sagging breasts and bellies; some with single forms, some with double forms, some with heavy buttocks and thick calves.
सरोवरसमुद्रादिनदीपुलिनवासिनः। कृष्णान् गौरांश्च नीलांश्च श्वेतांश्च लोहितारुणान् ॥ ८.
Dwelling in lakes, ponds, seas, and riverbanks; black, fair, blue, white, and red-hued beings.
बभ्रून् वै शबलान् धूम्रान् कद्रून् रासभदारूणान्। मुञ्जकेशान् हृषीकेशान् सर्पयजोपवीतिनः ॥ ८.
Brown, spotted, smoky, tawny, harsh as wild asses; with munja grass-like hair, bristling hair, and those wearing serpents as sacred threads.
विसृष्टाक्षान् विरूपाक्षान् कृशाक्षानेकलोचनान्। बहुशीर्षान् विशीर्षांश्च एकशीर्षांश्च शीर्षकान् ॥ ८.
With protruding eyes, deformed eyes, thin eyes, and many-eyed; with many heads, headless, and single-headed ones.
चण्डांश्च विकटांश्चैव विरोमान् रोमशांस्तथा। अन्धांस्व जटिलांश्चैव कुञ्जान् हेषकवामनान् ॥ ८.
Fierce and monstrous, hairy and very hairy; blind, matted-haired, dwarfish, and those who neigh like horses.
सरोवरसमुद्रादिनदीपुलिनसेविनः। एककर्णान् महाकर्णान् शङ्कुकर्णानकर्णिकान् ॥ ८.
Dwelling in lakes, ponds, seas, and riverbanks; with single ears, great ears, conch-shaped ears, and those without ears.
दंष्ट्रिणो नखिनश्चैव निर्द्दन्तांश्च द्विजिह्वकान्। एकहस्तान् द्विहस्तांश्च त्रिहस्तांश्चाप्यहस्तकान् ॥ ८.
With tusks, with claws, toothless, double-tongued; with one hand, two hands, three hands, and those without hands.
एकपादान् द्विपादांश्च त्रिपादान् बहुपादकान् । महायोगान् महासत्त्वान् सुतपक्वान् महाबलान् ॥ ८.
With one foot, two feet, three feet, and many feet; of great yogic power, great strength, intense austerity, and immense might.
सर्वत्रगानप्रतिघान् ब्रह्मज्ञान् कामरूपिणः । घोरान् क्रूरांश्च मेध्यांश्च शिवान् पुण्यान् सवादिनः ॥ ८.
Moving everywhere, unobstructed, knowing Brahman, able to assume any form; terrible, cruel, pure, auspicious, virtuous, and eloquent.
कुशहस्तान् महाजिह्वान् महाकर्णान्महाननान्। हस्तादांश्च मुखादांश्च शिरोदांश्च कपालिनः ॥ ८.
With kusa grass in hand, great tongues, great ears, great jaws; those who eat with their hands, mouths, or heads, and those adorned with skulls.
धन्विनो मुद्गरधरानसिशूलधरांस्तथा। दीप्तास्यान् दीप्तनेत्रांश्च चित्र माल्यानुलेषनान् ॥ ८.
Archers, wielders of clubs, swords, and spears; with blazing mouths, blazing eyes, adorned with varied garlands and ointments.
अन्नादान् पिशितादांश्च बहुरूपान् सुरूपकान् । रात्रिसन्ध्याचरान् घोरान् व्कचित्सौम्यान् दिवाचरान्। नक्तञ्चरान् सुदुष्प्रेक्ष्यान् घोरांस्तान् वै निशाचरान् ॥ ८.
Eaters of food and flesh, of many forms, of beautiful forms; those who move at night and dusk, terrible ones, some gentle, those who move by day, those who roam at night, hard to behold, those fearsome night-wanderers.
परत्वे च भयं दैव सर्वे ते गतमानसाः। नैषां भार्याऽस्ति पुत्रो वा सर्वे ते ह्यूर्द्ध्वरेतसः ॥ ८.
For them, fear of others and fate is gone, their minds are detached; they have neither wife nor son, for all are of upward-flowing seed.
शतन्तानि सहस्राणि भूतानामात्मयोगिनाम्। एते सर्वे महात्मानो भूत्याः पुत्राः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ॥ ८.
Hundreds and thousands of beings, self-controlled by their own power—these all, great-souled, are declared to be the sons of Bhūti.
कपिशा चैव कूष्माण्डीकूष्माण्डाञ्जज्ञिरे पुनः । मिथुनानि पिशाचानां वर्णेन कपिशेन च। कपिशत्वात् पिशाचास्ते सर्वे च पिशिताशनाः ॥ ८.
And tawny Kūṣmāṇḍas were born again, as well as pairs of Piśācas with tawny color; because of their tawny hue, all those Piśācas are flesh-eaters.
युग्मानि षोडशान्यानि वर्त्तमानास्तदन्वयाः। नामतस्तान् प्रवक्ष्यामि पुरुषादांस्तदन्वयान् ॥ ८.
There are sixteen pairs, along with their lineages, currently existing; I will now name them, beginning with the flesh-eaters and their descendants.
छगलश्छगली चैव वक्रो वक्रमुखी तथा। षोडशानां गणाश्चैव सूची सूचीमुखस्तथा ॥ ८.
Chagala and Chagalī, Vakra and Vakramukhī, Sūcī and Sūcīmukha are among the sixteen groups.
