पूतना मातृसामान्यास्तथा भूतभयङ्कराः। बालानां मानुषे लोके ग्रहा वैमानहेतुकाः ॥ ८.
Pūtanā are common among the mothers, and also terrifying to beings; among humans, they are planetary influences causing harm to children.
स्कन्दग्रहादयश्चैव आपकास्त्रासकादयः। कौमारास्ते तु विज्ञेया बालानां ग्रहवृत्तयः ॥ ८.
Skanda-graha and others, as well as Āpaka and Trāsaka, are to be understood as belonging to childhood; these are planetary influences affecting children.
स्कन्दग्रहविशेषाणां मायिकानां तथैव च। पूतनानामभूतानां ये च लोकविनायकाः ॥ ८.
Of the special Skanda-grahas, and similarly the magical ones, the Pūtanās, the spirits, and those who are leaders among beings.
सहस्रशत सङ्ख्यानां मर्त्यलोकविचारिणाम्। एवं गणशतान्येव चरन्ति पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥ ८.
Numbering in hundreds and thousands, roaming among mortals, thus hundreds of such groups wander this earth.
यक्षाः पुण्यतमा नाम तथा ये केऽपि गुह्यकाः। यक्षा देवजना श्चैव तथा पुण्यजनाश्च ये ॥ ८.
Yakṣas are called the most virtuous, and likewise those who are Guhyakas; Yakṣas, divine beings, and also those who are virtuous people.
गुह्यकानाञ्च सर्वेषामगस्त्या ये च राक्षसाः । पौलस्त्या राक्षसा ये च विश्वामित्राश्च ये स्मृताः ॥ ८.
Among all the Guhyakas, those of Agastya, and also the rākṣasas; those rākṣasas of Pulastya, and those remembered as of Viśvāmitra.
यक्षाणां राक्षसानाञ्च पौलस्त्यागस्त्ययश्च ये । तेषां राजा महाराजः कुबेरो ह्यलकाधिपः ॥ ८.
Among the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, those of Pulastya and Agastya, their king, the great king, is Kubera, lord of Alaka.
यक्षा दृष्ट्वा पिबन्तीह नृणां मांसमसृग्वसाम्। रक्षांस्यनुप्रवेशेन पिशाचाः परिपीडनैः ॥ ८.
The Yakṣas, seeing, drink here the flesh and blood of men; the rākṣasas, by entering, and the piśācas, by tormenting.
सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नाः समक्षेत्राश्च दैवतैः। भास्वरा बलवन्तश्च ईश्वराः करामरूपिणः ॥ ८.
Endowed with all marks, sharing the same fields as the gods, radiant, powerful, lords, and possessing forms at will.
अनाभिभक्षा विक्रान्ताः सर्वलोकनमस्कृताः। सूक्ष्माश्चौजस्विनो मेध्या वरदा यज्ञियाश्च ये ॥ ८.
Unaffected by consumption, courageous, honored by all worlds, subtle, vigorous, pure, bestowers of boons, and fit for sacrifice.
देवानां तुल्यधर्माणां ह्यसुराः सर्वशः स्मृताः। त्रिभिः पाधैस्तु गन्धर्वा देवै र्हीनाः प्रभावतः ॥ ८.
The asuras, whose conduct is similar to the gods, are remembered as such; the gandharvas are inferior to the gods by three parts in power.
गन्धर्वेभ्यस्त्रिभिः पादैर्हीना वै सर्वगुह्यकाः। प्रभावतुल्या यक्षाणां विज्ञेयाः सर्वराक्षसाः। ऐश्वर्यहीना यक्षेभ्यः पिशाचास्त्रि गुणं पुनः ॥ ८.
All the Guhyakas are inferior to the Gandharvas by three parts; the rākṣasas are to be known as equal in power to the Yakṣas; the piśācas are again inferior to the Yakṣas by three qualities.
एवं धनेन रूपेण आयुषा च बलेन च। धर्मैश्वर्येण बुद्ध्या च तपःश्रुतपराक्रमैः ॥ ८.
Thus, in wealth, beauty, lifespan, and strength, in virtue, sovereignty, intelligence, asceticism, learning, and prowess.
देवासुरेभ्यो हीयन्ते त्रीन् पादान् वै परस्परम्। गन्धर्वाद्याः पिशाचान्ताश्चतस्रो देवयोनयः ॥ ८.
The gods and asuras are mutually inferior by three parts; Gandharvas and others down to Piśācas are the four divine lineages.
अतः श्रृणुत भद्रं वः प्रजाः क्रोधवशत्मकाः । क्रोधायां कन्यका जज्ञे द्वादश ह्यात्मसम्भवाः। ता भार्याः पुलहस्यासन्नामतस्ता निबोधत ॥ ८.
Now hear, O blessed people, whose nature is governed by anger. In anger, a maiden was born, and twelve daughters came forth from her own being. They became the wives of Pulaha; therefore, listen to their names.
मृगी च मृगमन्दा च हरिभद्रा इरावती। भूता च कपिशा दंष्ट्रा निशा तिर्या तथैव च। श्वेता चैव स्वरा चैव सुरसा चेति विश्रुताः ॥ ८.
Mṛgī, Mṛgamandā, Haribhadra, Irāvatī, Bhūtā, Kapiśā, Damṣṭrā, Niśā, Tiryā, Śvetā, Svarā, and Surasā—these are the renowned names.
मृग्यास्तु हरिणाः पुत्रा मृगाश्चान्ये शशास्तथा। न्यङ्कवः शरभा ये च रुरवः पृषताश्च ये ॥ ८.
From Mṛgī came the deer, and from Mṛgamandā other deer and hares; Nyaṅkavas, Śarabhas, Rurus, and Pṛṣatas also arose from her.
मृगराजा मृगमन्दाया गवयाश्चापरे तथा। महिषोष्ट्रवराहाश्च खड्गगौरमुखास्तथा ॥ ८.
The king of beasts was born from Mṛgamandā, as well as the Gavayas; also buffaloes, camels, boars, rhinoceroses, and those with the face of a gaur.
हरेस्तु हरयः पुत्रा गोलाङ्गुलतरक्षवः । वानराः किन्नराश्चैव व्याघ्राः किम्पुरुषास्तथा। इत्येवमादयोऽन्येऽपि इरावत्या निबोधत ॥ ८.
From Hari came the Haris, Golāṅgulas, Tarakṣas, monkeys, Kinnaras, tigers, and Kimpuruṣas; likewise, other kinds arose from Irāvatī—listen to them.
सूर्यस्याण्डकपाले द्वे समानीय तु भौवनः। हस्ताभ्यां परिगृह्याथ रथन्तरमगायत ॥ ८.
Bhauvana brought together two halves of the shell of the sun, and, grasping them with his hands, sang the Rathantara Sāman.
साम्ना प्रसूयमानेन सद्य एव गजोऽभवत्। स प्रायच्छदिरावत्यै पुत्रार्थं स तु भौवनः ॥ ८.
As the Sāman was sung, an elephant was instantly born; Bhauvana gave him to Irāvatī for the sake of a son.
इरावत्याः सुतो यस्मात्तस्मादैरावतः स्मृतः । देवराजोपवाह्यत्वात् प्रथमः स मतङ्गराट्। शुभ्राभ्रभाश्चतुर्द्दंष्ट्रः श्रीमानैरावतो गजः ॥ ८.
Because he was the son of Irāvatī, he is called Airāvata. As he was yoked to the chariot of the king of the gods, he became the foremost lord of elephants—Airāvata, shining like a white cloud, with four tusks, glorious.
अप्सुजस्यैकमूलस्य सुवर्णाभस्य हस्तिनः । षड्दन्तस्य हि भद्रस्य औपावाह्यश्च वै बलः ॥ ८.
Of the golden-hued elephant, born from the single root of Apsuja, with six tusks and noble, Bhadra is the one yoked to the chariot, and Bala is his strength.
तस्य पुत्रोऽञ्जनश्चैव सुप्रतीकोऽथ वामनः। पद्मश्चैव चतुर्थोऽभूद्धस्तिनी चाभ्रमुस्तथा ॥ ८.
His sons were Añjana, Supratīka, Vāmana, and Padma; the fourth was Padma, and Hastinī was also born, as was Ābhramū.

Śvetā gave birth to four swift elephants of the quarters: Bhadra, Mṛga, Manda, and Saṅkīrṇa—these four sons.
सङ्कीर्णोऽप्यञ्जनो यस्तु उपवाह्यो यमस्य तु। भद्रो यः सुप्रतीकस्तु हरितः स ह्यपाम्पतेः ॥ ८.
Saṅkīrṇa, who is Añjana, is yoked to Yama; Bhadra, who is Supratīka, is green and belongs to the lord of waters.
पद्मो मन्दस्तु यो गौरो द्विपो ह्यैलविलस्य सः। मृगः श्यामस्तु यो हस्ती उपवाह्यः स पावकैः ॥ ८.
Padma, who is Manda, is white and the elephant of Ailavila; Mṛga, who is Śyāma, is the elephant yoked to the fire gods.
पद्मोत्तरस्तु यः पद्मौ गजो वै वरुणो गणः। उपलेपनमेषश्च तस्याष्टौ जज्ञिरे सुताः ॥ ८.
Padmottara, who is Padma, is the elephant of Varuṇa's host; Upalepana, the ram, had eight sons born to him.
उदग्रभावेनोपेता जायन्ते तस्य चान्वये। श्वेतबालनखाः पिङ्गा वर्ष्मवन्तो मतङ्गजाः। मतङ्गजान् प्रवक्ष्यामि नागानन्यानपि क्रमात् ॥ ८.
Born in his lineage, endowed with great vigor, are elephants with white young nails, tawny, and large-bodied. I will speak of elephants and other nāgas in order.
कपिलः पुण्डरीकश्च सुमनाभो रथान्तरः। जातौ नाम्ना सुतौ ताभ्यां सुप्रतिष्ठप्रमर्द्दनौ ॥ ८.
Kapila, Puṇḍarīka, Sumanābha, and Rathāntara—these two sons were born by name, well-established and mighty.
