आलम्बा उत्कचा कृष्णा निऋतो कपिला शिवा। केशिनी च महाभागा भगिन्यः सप्त याः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
Ālambā, Utkacā, Kṛṣṇā, Nirṛtā, Kapilā, Śivā, and Keśinī—these seven illustrious sisters are remembered.
ताभ्यो लोकामिषादश्च हन्तारो युद्धदुर्मदाः। उदीर्णा राक्षसगणा इमे उत्पादिताः शुभाः ॥ ८.
From them arose these powerful hosts of Rākṣasas, fierce in battle and destroyers of living beings, who were produced for the consumption of the worlds.
आलम्बेयो गणः क्रूर उत्कचेयो गणस्तथा। तथा कार्ष्णेयशैवेया राक्षसा ह्युत्तमा गणाः ॥ ८.
The Ālambeya host is cruel, and so is the Utkaceya host; likewise, the Kārṣṇeya and Śaiveya Rākṣasas are excellent hosts.
तथैव नैऋतो नाम त्र्यम्बकानुचरेण ह। उत्पादितः प्रजासर्गो गणेश्वरचरेण तु ॥ ८.
In the same way, the host called Naiṛta was produced by the follower of Tryambaka, and by the attendant of Gaṇeśvara.
उत्पादिता बलवता उदीर्णा यक्षराक्षसाः । विक्रान्ताः शौर्यसम्पन्ना नैऋता देवराक्षसाः। येषामधिपतिर्युक्तो नाम्ना ख्यातो विरूपकः ॥ ८.
The powerful and mighty Yakṣa-Rākṣasas were produced, heroic and full of valor—these Naiṛta divine Rākṣasas, whose chief is renowned by the name Virūpaka.
तेषां गणशतानेका उद्धृतानां महात्मनाम्। प्रायेणानुचरन्त्येते शङ्करं जगतः प्रभुम् ॥ ८.
Hundreds of hosts of these great beings, having been raised up, generally attend upon Śaṅkara, the Lord of the universe.
दैत्यराजेन कुम्भेन महाकाया महात्मना ।. उत्पादिता महावीर्या महाबलपराक्रमाः ॥ ८.
By the Daitya king Kumbha, of great body and great soul, were produced mighty, heroic beings of immense strength and prowess.
कपिलेया महावीर्या उदीर्णा दैत्यराक्षसाः। कम्पनेन च यक्षेण केशिन्यास्ते परे जनाः ॥ ८.
From Kapilā were born mighty Daitya-Rākṣasas, and from Kampana the Yakṣa, and from Keśinī, those other beings.
उत्पादिता महावाता उदीर्णा यक्षराक्षसाः। केशिनीदुहितुश्चैव नीलायाः क्षुद्रमानसाः ॥ ८.
The powerful Yakṣa-Rākṣasas called Mahāvātas were produced, and from Keśinī's daughter Nīlā came those of weak mind.
आलम्बेयेन जनिता नैकाः सुरसिकेन हि। नैला इति समाख्याता दुर्जया घोरविक्रमाः ॥ ८.
From Ālambeya, many were born through Surasika; they are called Nailas, unconquerable and of terrible prowess.
चरन्ति पृतिवीं कृत्स्नां तत्र ते देवलौकिकाः। बहुत्वाच्चैव सर्गस्य तेषां वक्तुं न शक्यते ॥ ८.
They roam the entire earth—those beings of divine origin; and because of the multitude of their creation, it is not possible to describe them all.
तस्यास्त्वपि च नीलाया विकचा नाम राक्षसी। दुहिता स्वभावविकचा मन्दसत्त्वपराक्रमा ॥ ८.
And from Nīlā, there was a Rākṣasī named Vikacā, her daughter, naturally bloated, of dull mind and weak strength.
तस्या अपि विरूपेण नैऋतेनेह च प्रजाः। उत्पादिताः सुरा घोराः श्रृणु तास्त्वनुपूर्वशः ॥ ८.
From her also, by Virūpa, the Naiṛta, were produced fierce divine beings—listen to their names in order.
दंष्ट्राकरालविकृता महाकर्णा महोदराः। हारका भीषकाश्चैव तथैव क्रामकाः परे ॥ ८.
Those with distorted fangs, huge ears, great bellies, the Hārakas, the Bhīṣakas, and likewise the Krāmakas—these others as well.
वैनकाश्च पिशाचाश्च वाहकाः प्राशकाः परे। भूमिराक्षसका ह्येते मन्दाः पुरुषविक्रमाः ॥ ८.
The Vainakas, Piśācas, Vāhakas, and Prāśakas—these are the earth-dwelling Rākṣasas, slow and of human-like strength.
चरन्त्यदृष्टपूर्वाश्च नानाकारा ह्यनेकशः। उत्कृष्ट बलसत्त्वा ये ते च वै खेचराः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
They wander in forms never seen before, of many kinds and in great numbers; those of superior strength and energy are remembered as sky-dwellers.
लक्षमात्रेण चाकाशं स्वल्पाः स्वल्पं चरन्ति वै । एतैर्व्याप्तमिमं लोकं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥ ८.
In a space measuring a hundred thousand, the small ones move only a little; by these, this world is pervaded hundreds and thousands of times.
भूमी राक्षसकैः सर्वैरनेकैः क्षुद्रराक्षसैः। नानाप्रकारैराक्रान्ता नानादेशाः समन्ततः ॥ ८.
The earth is occupied everywhere by all the rākṣasas, many minor rākṣasas, of various kinds, in various regions.
समासाभिहताश्वैव ह्यष्टौ राक्षसमातरः। अष्टौ विभागा ह्येषां हि विख्याता अनुपूर्वशः ॥ ८.
Just as horses are struck in groups, so too there are eight mothers of rākṣasas; eight divisions of them are indeed known, in succession.
भद्रका निकराः केचिद्यज्ञनिष्पत्तिहेतुकाः। सहस्रसतसङ्ख्याता मर्त्त्यलोकविचारिणः ॥ ८.
Some are called Bhadrakā, groups whose purpose is the completion of sacrifices; numbering in hundreds and thousands, they roam among mortals.
पूतना मातृसामान्यास्तथा भूतभयङ्कराः। बालानां मानुषे लोके ग्रहा वैमानहेतुकाः ॥ ८.
Pūtanā are common among the mothers, and also terrifying to beings; among humans, they are planetary influences causing harm to children.
स्कन्दग्रहादयश्चैव आपकास्त्रासकादयः। कौमारास्ते तु विज्ञेया बालानां ग्रहवृत्तयः ॥ ८.
Skanda-graha and others, as well as Āpaka and Trāsaka, are to be understood as belonging to childhood; these are planetary influences affecting children.
स्कन्दग्रहविशेषाणां मायिकानां तथैव च। पूतनानामभूतानां ये च लोकविनायकाः ॥ ८.
Of the special Skanda-grahas, and similarly the magical ones, the Pūtanās, the spirits, and those who are leaders among beings.
सहस्रशत सङ्ख्यानां मर्त्यलोकविचारिणाम्। एवं गणशतान्येव चरन्ति पृथिवीमिमाम् ॥ ८.
Numbering in hundreds and thousands, roaming among mortals, thus hundreds of such groups wander this earth.
यक्षाः पुण्यतमा नाम तथा ये केऽपि गुह्यकाः। यक्षा देवजना श्चैव तथा पुण्यजनाश्च ये ॥ ८.
Yakṣas are called the most virtuous, and likewise those who are Guhyakas; Yakṣas, divine beings, and also those who are virtuous people.
गुह्यकानाञ्च सर्वेषामगस्त्या ये च राक्षसाः । पौलस्त्या राक्षसा ये च विश्वामित्राश्च ये स्मृताः ॥ ८.
Among all the Guhyakas, those of Agastya, and also the rākṣasas; those rākṣasas of Pulastya, and those remembered as of Viśvāmitra.
यक्षाणां राक्षसानाञ्च पौलस्त्यागस्त्ययश्च ये । तेषां राजा महाराजः कुबेरो ह्यलकाधिपः ॥ ८.
Among the Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, those of Pulastya and Agastya, their king, the great king, is Kubera, lord of Alaka.
यक्षा दृष्ट्वा पिबन्तीह नृणां मांसमसृग्वसाम्। रक्षांस्यनुप्रवेशेन पिशाचाः परिपीडनैः ॥ ८.
The Yakṣas, seeing, drink here the flesh and blood of men; the rākṣasas, by entering, and the piśācas, by tormenting.
सर्वलक्षणसम्पन्नाः समक्षेत्राश्च दैवतैः। भास्वरा बलवन्तश्च ईश्वराः करामरूपिणः ॥ ८.
Endowed with all marks, sharing the same fields as the gods, radiant, powerful, lords, and possessing forms at will.
अनाभिभक्षा विक्रान्ताः सर्वलोकनमस्कृताः। सूक्ष्माश्चौजस्विनो मेध्या वरदा यज्ञियाश्च ये ॥ ८.
Unaffected by consumption, courageous, honored by all worlds, subtle, vigorous, pure, bestowers of boons, and fit for sacrifice.
