द्वादशैते प्रविष्टा हि पर्वता लवणोदधिम्। महेन्द्रभयवित्रस्ताः पक्षच्छेदभयात्तदा। यदेतदॄश्यते चन्द्रे श्वेते कृष्णशशाकृतिः ।। ४७.
These twelve mountains entered the salt ocean, terrified by Mahendra and the fear of having their wings cut; what is seen on the moon, the white mark shaped like a black hare, is due to this.
भारतस्य तु वर्षस्य भेदास्ते नव कीर्तिताः। इहोदितस्य दृश्यन्ते तथान्येऽन्यत्र नोदिते ।। ४७.
The divisions of the land of Bharata are said to be nine; those mentioned here are seen, and others not mentioned are elsewhere.
उत्तरोत्तरमेतेषां वर्षमुद्दिश्यते गुणैः। आरोग्यायुः प्रमाणाभ्यां धर्मतः कामतोऽर्थतः ।। ४७.
Each successive region is distinguished by its qualities, such as health, lifespan, measure, righteousness, desire, and wealth.
समन्वितानि भूतानि गुणै रेतैस्तु भागतः। वसन्ति नानाजातीनि तेषु वर्षेषु तानि वै। इत्येषाऽधारयत् सर्वं पृत्वी विश्वं जगत्स्थिता ।। ४७.
The beings in these regions are endowed with qualities and reproductive fluids in varying degrees; diverse species dwell in those regions, and thus the earth sustains the entire world.
दक्षिणेनापि वर्षस्य भारतस्य निबोधत। दशयोजनसाहस्रं समतीत्य महार्णवम् ।। ४८.
Now hear of the southern part of the region called Bhārata: after crossing ten thousand yojanas over the great ocean.
त्रीण्येव तु सहस्राणि योजनानां समायतम्। अतस्त्रिभागविस्तीर्णं नानापुष्पफलोदयम् ।। ४८.
There are only three thousand yojanas in extent, and it is spread out in three parts, abundant with various flowers and fruits.
विद्युत्वन्तं महाशैलं तत्रैकं कुलपर्वतम्। येन कूटतटैर्नैकैस्तद्द्वीपं समलंकृतम् ।। ४८.
There stands a great mountain, flashing like lightning, the chief among mountains, adorned with many peaks and ridges, beautifying the island.
प्रसन्नस्वादुसलिलास्तत्र नद्यः सहस्रशः। वाप्यस्तस्य तु द्वीपस्य प्रवृत्ता विमलोदकाः ।। ४८.
There, thousands of rivers flow with clear, sweet water; ponds on that island are filled with pure water.
तस्य शैलस्य छिद्रेषु विस्तीर्णेष्वायतेषु च। अनेकेषु समृद्धानि नानाकाराणि सर्व्वशः ।। ४८.
In the wide and long crevices of that mountain, there are many prosperous settlements of various forms in every way.
नरनारीसमाढ्यानि मुदितानि महान्ति च। तेषां तलप्रवेशानि सहस्राणि शतानि च ।। ४८.
They are rich in men and women, joyful and large; their entrances at the base number in the thousands and hundreds.
पुराणि सन्निविष्टानि पर्वतान्तर्गतानि च। सुसम्बद्धानि चान्योन्यमेकद्वाराणि चान्यथ ।। ४८.
Ancient cities are situated within the mountains, well-connected to each other, some with single gates, others with different arrangements.
दीर्घश्मश्रुधरात्मानो नीला मेघसमप्रभाः। जातमात्राः प्रजास्तत्र अशीतिपरमायुषः ।। ४८.
The inhabitants there have long beards and bodies, their hue like dark clouds; newborn generations live up to eighty years.
शाखामृगसधर्माणः फलमूलाशिनस्तथा। गोधर्माणो ह्यनिर्दिष्टाः शौचाचारविवर्जिताः ।। ४८.
They resemble branch-dwelling animals, subsisting on fruits and roots; their ways are undefined, lacking purity and proper conduct.
तद्द्वीपं तादृशैः पूर्णं मनुजैः क्षुद्रमानुषैः । एवमेतेऽन्तरद्वीपा व्याख्याता आनुपूर्वशः ।। ४८.
That island is filled with such people, small-bodied humans; thus, these inner islands have been described in order.
विंशत्र्रिंशच्च पञ्चाशत् षष्ट्यशीतिः शतं तथा। सहस्रमपि चाप्युक्तं योजनानां समन्ततः ।। ४८.
Twenty, thirty, fifty, sixty, eighty, a hundred, and even a thousand yojanas in all directions have been mentioned.
विस्तीर्णाश्चायताश्चैव नानासत्त्वसमाकुलाः। बर्हिणद्वीपपर्वाणि क्षुद्रद्वीपाः सहस्रशः ।। ४८.
They are broad and long, teeming with various creatures; the islands of Barhiṇa and the smaller islands number in the thousands.
जम्बूद्वीपप्रदेशात्तु षडन्ये विविधाश्रयाः। अत्र द्वीपाः समाख्याता नानारत्नाकराः क्षितौ ।। ४८.
Apart from the region of Jambūdvīpa, there are six others with diverse habitats; here, the islands on earth have been named, each rich in various gems.
अङ्गद्वीपं यमद्वीपं मलयद्वीपमेव च। शङ्खद्वीपं कुशद्वीपं वराहद्वीपमेव च ।। ४८.
Angadvīpa, Yamadvīpa, Malayadvīpa, Shankhadvīpa, Kushadvīpa, and Varahadvīpa as well.
अङ्गद्वीपं निबोध त्वं नानासङ्घसमाकुलम्। नानाम्लेच्छगणाकीर्णं तद्द्वीपं बहुविस्तरम् ।। ४८.
Hear now of Angadvīpa, crowded with various groups, filled with many tribes of foreigners, and vast in extent.
हेमविद्रुमपूर्णानां रत्नानामाकरं क्षितौ। नदीशैलवनैश्चित्रं सन्निभं लवणाम्भसा ।। ४८.
It is a mine of gold, coral, and gems on earth; adorned with rivers, mountains, and forests, and bordered by salty waters.
तत्र चक्रगिरिर्नाम नैक निर्झरकन्दरः। तत्र सा तु दरी चास्य नानासत्वसमाश्रया ।। ४८.
There is the mountain named Cakra, with countless waterfalls and caves; there also is its gorge, which is the abode of many kinds of creatures.
स मध्ये नागदेशस्य नैकदेशो महागिरिः। कोटिभ्यां नागनिलयं प्राप्तो नदनदी पतिम् ।। ४८.
In the midst of the land of the Nagas stands a great mountain, unique in its region, whose peaks reach the dwelling of the Nagas and the lord of rivers.
यमद्वीपमिति प्रोक्तं नानारत्नाकराचितम् । तत्रापि द्युतिमान्नाम पर्वतो धातुमण्डितः। समुद्रगानां प्रभवः प्रभवः काञ्चनस्य तु ।। ४८.
It is called Yamadvipa, adorned with various jewels; there too is a radiant mountain, decorated with ores, the source of rivers and indeed the origin of gold.
तथैव मलयद्वीपमेवमेव सुसंवृतम्। मणिरत्नाकरं स्फीतमाकरं कनकस्य च ।। ४८.
Likewise, the island of Malaya is well enclosed, abundant in gems and jewels, and is a rich source of gold.
आकरं चन्दनानाञ्च समुद्राणां तथाकरम्। नानाम्लेच्छगणाकीर्णं नदीपर्वतमण्डितम् ।। ४८.
It is a source of sandalwood and of the oceans, filled with many groups of foreigners, and adorned with rivers and mountains.
तत्र श्रीमांस्तु मलयः पर्वतो रजताकरः। महामलय इत्येवं विख्यातो वरपर्वतः ।। ४८.
There stands the illustrious Malaya mountain, a source of silver, renowned as the great Malaya, the best of mountains.
द्वितीयं मन्दरं नाम प्रथितञ्च सदा क्षितौ। आगस्त्यभवनं तत्र देवासुरनमस्कृतम् ।। ४८.
The second is called Mandara, always famous on earth; there is the abode of Agastya, revered by gods and asuras.
तथा काञ्चनपादस्य मलयस्यापरस्य हि। निकुञ्जैस्तृणसोमाङ्गैराश्रमं पुण्यसेवितम् ।। ४८.
Likewise, at the golden foot of the other Malaya mountain, is a hermitage frequented by the virtuous, surrounded by groves and grassy Soma plants.
नानापुष्पफलोपेतं स्वर्गादपि विशिष्यते। तत्रावतरते स्वर्गः सदा पर्वसु पर्वसु ।। ४८.
Endowed with various flowers and fruits, it surpasses even heaven; there, heaven itself descends at every festival.
तथा त्रिकूटनिलये नानाधातुविभूषिते । अनेकयोजनोत्सेधे चित्रसानुदरीगृहे ।। ४८.
In the abode of Trikuta, adorned with various minerals, with peaks rising many yojanas high, are wondrous mountain slopes and houses in the valleys.
