पूर्वान् देशांश्च सेवन्ती भित्त्वा सा बहुधा गिरीन्। कर्णप्रावरणांश्चैव प्राप्य चाश्वमुखानपि ।। ४७.
Serving the eastern lands, breaking through many mountains, she reached the Karṇaprāvaraṇa and also the Aśvamukha.
सिकतापर्वतमरून् गत्वा विद्याधरान् ययौ। नेमिमण्डलकोष्ठे तु प्रविष्टा सा महोदधिम् ।। ४७.
Having gone to the sandy mountain and desert, she proceeded to the Vidyādhara; in the circle of Nemimaṇḍala, she entered the great ocean.
तासां नद्युपनद्यश्च शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। उपगच्छन्ति ताः सर्वा यतो वर्षति वासवः ।। ४७.
Of these rivers and tributaries, hundreds and thousands approach; all of them, from where Indra pours rain.
वस्वोकसायास्तीरे तु वारिसुरभिविश्रुते। हरिश्रृङ्गे तु वसति विद्वान् कौबैरको वशी ।। ४७.
On the shore of Vasvokasā, renowned for fragrant waters, at Hariśṛṅga dwells the wise Kaubairaka, masterful.
यज्ञोपेतः स सुमहानमितौजाः सुविक्रमः। तत्रागस्त्यैः परिवृतो विद्वद्भिर्ब्रह्मराक्षसैः। कुबैरानुचराः ह्येते चत्वारस्तत्समाः स्मृताः ।। ४७.
Endowed with the sacred thread, exceedingly great, of immeasurable energy and valor, he was surrounded there by Agastyas, learned Brahmarakshasas, and Kubera's attendants—these four are remembered as his equals.
एवमेव तु विज्ञेया ऋद्धिः पर्वतवासिनाम्। परस्परेण द्विगुणा धर्मतः कामतोऽर्थतः ।। ४७.
In the same way, the prosperity of those who dwell in the mountains should be understood as twice as great as each other, whether in righteousness, desire, or wealth.
हेमकूटस्य पॄष्ठे तु सायनं नाम तत्सरः। मनस्विनी प्रभवति तस्माज्ज्योतिष्मती च सा ।। ४७.
On the summit of Hemakuta lies a lake named Sayana; from it arises the river Manasvini, and from there, the luminous Jyotishmati.
अवगाह्य ह्युभयतः समुद्रौ पूर्वपश्चिमौ । सरो विष्णुपदं नाम निषधे पर्वतोत्तमे ।। ४७.
Having bathed in both the eastern and western oceans, there is a lake called Vishnupada on the highest peak of Nishadha.
तस्माद्द्वयं प्रभवति गान्धर्वी नन्वली च या। मेरोः पश्चात् प्रभवति ह्रदश्चन्द्रप्रभो महान् ।। ४७.
From that, two rivers arise: the Gandharvi and the Anvali; west of Meru arises the great lake Chandraprabha.
तत्र जाम्बूनदी पुण्या यस्यां जाम्बूनदं शुभम्। पयोदं तु सरो नीले सुशुभ्रं पुण्डरीकवत् ।। ४७.
There is the sacred Jambunadi, in which the auspicious Jambunada gold is found; and on Mount Nila, the lake Payoda, shining and filled with lotuses.
पुण्डरीकापयोदा च तस्मान्नद्यौ विनिर्गते। श्वेतात् प्रभवते पुण्यं सरस्तूत्तरमानसम् ।। ४७.
From Payoda and the lotus-filled lake, two rivers emerge: Pundarika and Payoda; from Mount Shveta arises the sacred lake Uttaramānasa.
ज्योत्स्ना च मृगकान्ता च तस्माद्द्वे संबभूवतुः। मधुमत्सरः पुण्यञ्च पझमीनद्विजाकुलम् ।। ४७.
From that, two rivers are born: Jyotsna and Mrigakanta; there is the sacred lake Madhumat, teeming with Pajha fish and birds.
कल्पवृक्षसमाकीर्णं मधुवत्सर्वतः सुखम्। रुद्रकान्तमिति ख्यातं निर्मितं तद्भवेन तु ।। ४७.
Abundant with wish-fulfilling trees and honey everywhere, pleasant in all respects, it is known as Rudrakanta, created by Bhava.
अन्ये चाप्यत्र विख्याताः पझमीनद्विजाकुलाः। नाम्ना रुद्राजया नाम द्वादशोदधिसन्निभाः ।। ४७.
There are also others renowned here, filled with Pajha fish and birds, called by name Rudrajaya, twelve in number and resembling oceans.
तेभ्यः शान्ता च माध्वी च द्वे नद्यौ सम्बभूवतुः। यनि किम्पुरुषाद्यानि तेषु देवो न वर्षति ।। ४७.
From them, two rivers arise: Shanta and Madhvi; in the regions beginning with Kimpurusha, the gods do not send rain.
उद्भिद्यान्युदकान्यत्र प्रवहन्ति सरिद्वराः। ऋषभो दुन्दुभिश्चैव धूम्रश्चैव महागिरिः ।। ४७.
There, springs and other waters flow forth, and the excellent rivers: Rishabha, Dundubhi, and the great mountain Dhumra.
पूर्वायता महभागा निम्नगा लवणाम्भसि। चन्द्रकङ्कस्तथा प्राणो महानग्निः शिलोच्चयः। उदग्याता उदीच्यान्ता अवगाढा महोदधिम् ।। ४७.
Extending eastward, the blessed rivers flow into the salty sea: Chandrakaṅka, Prana, the great Agni, and the heap of rocks; extending northward, they reach the northern ocean.
सोमकश्च वराहश्च नारदश्च महीधरः। प्रतीचीमायतास्ते वै प्रविष्टा लवणोदधिम् ।। ४७.
Somaka, Varaha, and Narada are great mountains extending westward; they enter the salt ocean.
चक्रो बलाहकश्चैव मैनाकश्चैव पर्वतः। आयतास्ते महाशैलाः समुद्रं दक्षिणं प्रति। चन्द्रमैनाकयोर्मध्येविदिशं दक्षिणां प्रति ।। ४७.
Chakra, Balāhaka, and Mainaka are great mountains extending southward to the ocean; between Chandra and Mainaka lies the southern direction.
तत्र संवर्त्तको नाम सोऽग्निः पिबति तज्जलम्। नाम्ना समुद्रपः श्रीमानौर्वः स वडवामुखः ।। ४७.
There, the fire called Samvartaka drinks that water; known as Samudrapa, the illustrious Aurva, that is the mouth of Vadava.
द्वादशैते प्रविष्टा हि पर्वता लवणोदधिम्। महेन्द्रभयवित्रस्ताः पक्षच्छेदभयात्तदा। यदेतदॄश्यते चन्द्रे श्वेते कृष्णशशाकृतिः ।। ४७.
These twelve mountains entered the salt ocean, terrified by Mahendra and the fear of having their wings cut; what is seen on the moon, the white mark shaped like a black hare, is due to this.
भारतस्य तु वर्षस्य भेदास्ते नव कीर्तिताः। इहोदितस्य दृश्यन्ते तथान्येऽन्यत्र नोदिते ।। ४७.
The divisions of the land of Bharata are said to be nine; those mentioned here are seen, and others not mentioned are elsewhere.
उत्तरोत्तरमेतेषां वर्षमुद्दिश्यते गुणैः। आरोग्यायुः प्रमाणाभ्यां धर्मतः कामतोऽर्थतः ।। ४७.
Each successive region is distinguished by its qualities, such as health, lifespan, measure, righteousness, desire, and wealth.
समन्वितानि भूतानि गुणै रेतैस्तु भागतः। वसन्ति नानाजातीनि तेषु वर्षेषु तानि वै। इत्येषाऽधारयत् सर्वं पृत्वी विश्वं जगत्स्थिता ।। ४७.
The beings in these regions are endowed with qualities and reproductive fluids in varying degrees; diverse species dwell in those regions, and thus the earth sustains the entire world.
दक्षिणेनापि वर्षस्य भारतस्य निबोधत। दशयोजनसाहस्रं समतीत्य महार्णवम् ।। ४८.
Now hear of the southern part of the region called Bhārata: after crossing ten thousand yojanas over the great ocean.
त्रीण्येव तु सहस्राणि योजनानां समायतम्। अतस्त्रिभागविस्तीर्णं नानापुष्पफलोदयम् ।। ४८.
There are only three thousand yojanas in extent, and it is spread out in three parts, abundant with various flowers and fruits.
विद्युत्वन्तं महाशैलं तत्रैकं कुलपर्वतम्। येन कूटतटैर्नैकैस्तद्द्वीपं समलंकृतम् ।। ४८.
There stands a great mountain, flashing like lightning, the chief among mountains, adorned with many peaks and ridges, beautifying the island.
प्रसन्नस्वादुसलिलास्तत्र नद्यः सहस्रशः। वाप्यस्तस्य तु द्वीपस्य प्रवृत्ता विमलोदकाः ।। ४८.
There, thousands of rivers flow with clear, sweet water; ponds on that island are filled with pure water.
तस्य शैलस्य छिद्रेषु विस्तीर्णेष्वायतेषु च। अनेकेषु समृद्धानि नानाकाराणि सर्व्वशः ।। ४८.
In the wide and long crevices of that mountain, there are many prosperous settlements of various forms in every way.
नरनारीसमाढ्यानि मुदितानि महान्ति च। तेषां तलप्रवेशानि सहस्राणि शतानि च ।। ४८.
They are rich in men and women, joyful and large; their entrances at the base number in the thousands and hundreds.
