Vayu Purana

तोया चैव महागौरी दुर्गा चान्तशिला तथा। विन्ध्यपादप्रसूताश्च नद्यः पुण्यजलाः शुभाः ।। ४५.

Toyā, Mahāgaurī, Durgā, and Antaśilā; and the rivers born from the foot of the Vindhya, all holy and auspicious.

गोदावरी भीमरथी कृष्णा वैण्यथ वञ्जुला। तुङ्गभद्रा सुप्रयोगा कावेरी च तथापगा। दक्षिणापथनद्यस्तु सह्यपादाद्विनिःसृताः ।। ४५.

Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Kṛṣṇā, Vaiṇyā, Vañjulā, Tuṅgabhadrā, Suprayogā, and Kāverī—these rivers of the southern region flow from the foot of the Sahya.

कृतमाला ताम्रवर्णा पुष्पजात्युत्पलावती। मलयाभिजातास्ता नद्यः सर्वाः शीतजलाः शुभाः ।। ४५.

Kṛtamālā, Tāmravarṇā, Puṣpajātī, Utpalāvatī—all these rivers, born from the Malaya mountains, are cool and auspicious.

त्रिसामा ऋतुकुल्या च इक्षुला त्रिदिवा च या। लाङ्गुलिनी वंशधरा महेन्द्रतनयाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.

Trisāmā, Ṛtukulyā, Ikṣulā, Tridivā, Lāṅgulinī, Vaṃśadharā—these are known as the daughters of Mahendra.

ऋषीका सुकुमारी च मन्दगा मन्दवाहिनी। कूपा पलाशिनी चैव शुक्तिमत्प्रभवाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.

Ṛṣīkā, Sukumārī, Mandagā, Mandavāhinī, Kūpā, and Palāśinī—all are said to originate from Śuktimat.

सर्वाः पुण्याः सरस्वत्यः सर्वा गङ्गाः समुद्रगाः । विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वा जगत्पापहराः स्मृताः ।। ४५.

All Sarasvatīs are holy, all Gaṅgās flow to the ocean; all are considered mothers of the world, removers of the world's sins.

तासां नद्युपनद्योऽपि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। तास्त्विमे कुरुपाञ्चालाः शाल्वाश्चैव सजाङ्गलाः ।। ४५.

Their tributaries and branches are hundreds and thousands; among them are the Kurus, Pāñcālas, Śālvas, and also the Sajāṅgalas.

शूरसेना भद्रकारा बोधाः शतपथेश्वरैः। वत्साः किसष्णाः कुल्याश् च कुन्तलाः काशिकोशलाः ।। ४५.

The Shurasenas, Bhadrakaras, Bodhas, rulers of Shatapathe; Vatsas, Kisasnas, Kulyas, Kuntalas, and the Kashikoshalas.

अथ पार्श्वे तिलङ्गाश्च मगधाश्च वृकैः सह। मध्यदेशा जनपदाः प्रायशोऽमी प्रकीर्तिताः ।। ४५.

Next, on the side, the Tilangas and Magadhas together with the Vrikas; these are mostly the peoples of the central region that have been named.

सह्यस्य चोत्तरार्द्धे तु यत्र गोदावरी नदी। पृथिव्यामिह कृत्स्नायां सप्रदेशो मनोरमः ।। ४५.

In the northern half of Sahya, where the Godavari river flows, there is a delightful region on this entire earth.

तत्र गोवर्द्धनो नाम सुरराजेन निर्मितः। रामप्रियार्थं स्वर्गोऽयं वृक्षा ओषधयस्तथा ।। ४५.

There, Govardhana was constructed by the king of the gods for the sake of Rama's pleasure; this is heaven, along with its trees and medicinal plants.

भरद्वाजेन मुनिना तत्प्रियार्थेऽवतारिताः। अन्तःपुरवनोद्देशस्तेन जज्ञे मनोरमः ।। ४५.

By the sage Bharadvaja, for his beloved, these were brought down; thus the inner palace garden was created, delightful in its form.

वाह्लीका वाढधानाश्च आभीराः कालतोयकाः। अपरीताश्च शूद्राश्च पह्नवाश्चर्मखण्डिकाः ।। ४५.

The Vahlikas, Vadhadhanas, Abhiras, Kalatoyakas, Aparitas, Shudras, Pahnava, and Charmakhandikas.

गान्धारा यवनाश्चैव सिन्धुसौवीरभद्रकाः। शका ह्रदाः कुलिन्दाश्च परिता हारपूरिकाः ।। ४५.

Gandharas, Yavanas, Sindhus, Sauvira Bhadrakas, Shakas, Hradas, Kulindas, Paritas, and Harapurikas.

रमटा रद्धकटकाः केकया दशमानिकाः। क्षत्रियोपनिवेशाश्च वैश्यशूद्रकुलानि च ।। ४५.

Ramata, Raddhakatakas, Kekayas, Dashamanikas; settlements of Kshatriyas, and also families of Vaishyas and Shudras.

काम्बोजा दरदाश्चैव बर्बराः प्रियलौकिकाः। पीनाश्चैव तुषाराश्च पह्लवा बाह्यतोदराः ।। ४५.

Kambojas, Daradas, Barbaras, Priyalaukikas, Pinas, Tusharas, Pahlavas, and Bahyatodaras.

आत्रेयाश्च भरद्वाजाः प्रस्थलाश्च कसेरुकाः. लम्पाका स्तनपाश्चैव पीडिका जुहुडैः सह ।। ४५.

Atreyas, Bharadvajas, Prasthalas, Kaserukas, Lampakas, Stanapas, Pidikas, together with the Juhudas.

अपगाश्चालिमद्राश्च किरातानाञ्च जातयः। तोमरा हंसमार्गाश्च काश्मीरास्तङ्गणास्तथा ।। ४५.

Apagas, Alimadras, and the tribes of the Kiratas; Tomaras, Hamsamargas, Kashmiris, and Tanganas as well.

चूलिकाश्चाहुकाश्चैव पूर्णदर्वास्तथैव च। एते देशा ह्युदीच्याश्च प्राच्यान् देशान्निबोधत ।। ४५.

Chulikas, Ahukas, Purnadarvas likewise; these are the northern regions, now hear of the eastern lands.

अन्ध्रवाकाः सुजरका अन्तर्गिरिबहिर्गिराः। तथा प्रवङ्गवङ्गेया मालदा मालवर्तिनः ।। ४५.

Andhravakas, Sujarakas, those within and outside the mountains; also Pravaṅgas, Vaṅgeyas, Maladas, and Malavartins.

ब्रह्मोत्तराः प्रविजया भार्गवा गेयमर्थकाः। प्राग्ज्योतिषाश्च मुण्डाश्च विदेहास्तामलिप्तकाः। माला मगधगोविन्दाः प्राच्यां जनपदाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.

Brahmottaras, Pravijayas, Bhargavas, Geyamarthakas; Pragjyotishas, Mundas, Videhas, Tamaliptakas; Mala, Magadha, Govinda—these are the peoples of the east.

अथापरे जनपदा दक्षिणापथ वासिनः । पाण्ड्याश्च केरलाश्चैव चौल्याः कुल्यास्तथैव च ।। ४५.

Now other peoples dwelling in the southern region: the Pandyas, Keralas, Caulyas, and Kulyas as well.

सेतुका मूषिकाश्चैव कुमना वनवासिकाः। महाराष्ट्रा माहिषकाः कलिङ्गाश्चैव सर्वशः ।। ४५.

Setukas, Mushikas, Kumanas, Vanavasikas; Maharashtras, Mahishakas, and all the Kalingas.

अभीराः सह चैषीकाः आटव्याश्च वराश्च ये। पुलिन्द्रा विन्ध्यमूलीका वैदर्बा दण्डकैः सह ।। ४५.

Abhiras together with Caishikas, Atavyas, and those who are distinguished; Pulindras, Vindhyamulikas, Vaidarbas, along with the Dandakas.

पौनिका मौनिकाश्चैव अस्मका भोगवर्द्धनाः। नैर्मिकाः कुन्तला आन्ध्रा उद्भिदा नलकालिकाः ।। ४५.

Paunikas, Maunikas, Asmakas, Bhogavardhanas; Nairmikas, Kuntalas, Andhras, Udbhidas, and Nalakalikas.

दाक्षिणात्याश्च वै देशा अपरांस्तान्निबोधत। शूर्पाकाराः कोलवनाः दुर्गाः कालीतकैः सह ।। ४५.

Now hear of the other southern regions: the Kolavana forests shaped like a winnowing basket, the fortresses, together with the Kalitakas.

पुलेयाश्च सुरालाश्च रूपसास्तापसैः सह। तथा तुरसिताश्चैव सर्वे चैव परक्षराः ।। ४५.

The Puleyas and the Suralas, along with the Rupasas and Tapasas, and likewise the Turasitas, and all the Paraksharas.

नासिक्याद्योश्च ये चान्ये ये चैवान्तरनर्मदाः। भानुकच्छाः समा हेयाः सहसा शाश्वतैरपि ।। ४५.

Those from Nasikya and Adya, and others, as well as those between the Narmada rivers; the Bhanu-Kacchas are to be avoided, even by the eternal ones.

कच्छीयाश्च सुराष्ट्राश्च अनर्त्ताश्चार्बुदैः सह। इत्येते सम्परीताश्च श्रृणुध्वं विन्ध्यवासिनः ।। ४५.

The Kachchhiyas, the Saurashtras, the Anarttas together with the Arbudas—these are all included; listen, O dwellers of the Vindhya.
