द्वीपो ह्युपनिविष्टोऽयं म्लेच्छैरन्तेषु नित्यशः। पूर्वे किराता ह्यस्यान्ते पश्चिमे यवनाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.
This island is always inhabited at its ends by foreigners; Kirātas are at its eastern end, and Yavanas are remembered at its western end.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या मध्ये शूद्राश्च भागशः। इज्यायुद्धवणिज्याभिर्वर्त्तयन्तो व्यवस्थिताः ।। ४५.
Brāhmaṇas, Kṣatriyas, and Vaiśyas are in the middle, and Śūdras are in portions; engaged in worship, warfare, and trade, they are established.
तेषां संव्यवहारोऽयं वर्त्तते तु परस्परम्। धर्मार्थकामसंयुक्तो वर्णानां तु स्वकर्मसु ।। ४५.
Their mutual dealings proceed among themselves, joined with righteousness, wealth, and desire, each according to their own duties.
सङ्कल्पपञ्चमानां तु आश्रमाणां यथाविधि। इह स्वर्गापवर्गार्थं प्रवृत्तिर्येषु मानुषी ।। ४५.
According to the prescribed order of the five resolutions and the stages of life, human activity here is undertaken for heaven and liberation.
यस्त्वयं नवमो द्वीपस्तिर्यगायत उच्यते। कृत्स्नं जयति यो ह्येनं स सम्राडिह कीर्त्त्यते ।। ४५.
This ninth island, which is said to extend across, whoever conquers it entirely is called the emperor here.
अयं लोकस्तु वै सम्राडन्तरिक्षो विराट् स्मृतः। स्वराडन्यः स्मृतो लोकः पुनर्वक्ष्यामि विस्तरम् ।। ४५.
This world is called the emperor, the vast intermediate space; another world is called the sovereign, and I will again describe its extent.
सप्त चास्मिन् सुपर्वाणो विश्रुताः कुलपर्वताः। महेन्द्रो मलयः सह्यः शुक्तिमानृक्षपर्वतः। विन्ध्यश्च पारियात्रश्च सप्तैते कुलपर्वताः ।। ४५.
And in this land, seven renowned clan mountains are known: Mahendra, Malaya, Sahya, Śuktimān, Ṛkṣa, Vindhya, and Pāriyātra—these are the seven clan mountains.
तेषां सहस्रशश्चान्ये पर्वतास्तु समीपगाः। अभिजाताः सर्वगुणा विपुलाश्चित्रसानवः ।। ४५.
Thousands of other mountains, born nearby, possessing all virtues, vast and with varied peaks, are also present.
मन्दरः पर्वत श्रेष्ठो वैहारो दर्दुरस्तथा। कोलाहलः ससुरसः मैनाको वैद्युतस्तथा ।। ४५.
Mandara, the foremost mountain, Vaihāra, Dardura, Kolāhala, Sasurasa, Maināka, and Vaidyuta are also named.
पातन्धमो नाम गिरिस्तथा पाण्डुरपर्वतः। गन्तुप्रस्थः कृष्णगिरिर्गोधनो गिरिरेव च ।। ४५.
Pātandhama, a mountain by name, and also Pāṇḍura mountain; Gantuprastha, Kṛṣṇagiri, Godhana, and another mountain as well.
पुष्पगिर्युज्जयन्तौ च शैलो रैवतकस्तथा। श्रीपर्वतश्च कारुश्च कूटशैलो गिरिस्तथा ।। ४५.
Puṣpagiri, Ujjayanta, and the mountain Raivataka; also Śrīparvata, Kāru, Kūṭaśaila, and Giri.
अन्ये तेभ्यः परिज्ञाता ह्रस्वाः स्वल्पोपजीविनः। तैर्विमिश्रा जतपदा आर्यम्लेच्छाश्च नित्यशः ।। ४५.
Other mountains, known among them, are small and provide little sustenance; among them dwell people of mixed origins, Aryas and Mlecchas, continually.
पीयन्ते यैरिमा नद्यो गङ्गा सिन्धुः सरस्वती। शतद्रुश्चन्द्रभागा च यमुना सरयूस्तथा ।। ४५.
By whom these rivers are drunk: Gaṅgā, Sindhu, Sarasvatī, Śatadru, Candrabhāgā, Yamunā, and also Sarayū.
इरावती वितस्ता च विपाशा देविका कुहूः । गोमती धुतपापा च बाहुदा च दृषद्वती ।। ४५.
Irāvatī, Vitastā, Vipāśā, Devikā, Kuhū, Gomati, Dhutapāpā, Bāhudā, and Dṛṣadvatī.
कौशिकी च तृतीया तु निश्चीरा गण्डकी तथा। इक्षु र्लोहित इत्येता हिमवत्पादनिःसृताः ।। ४५.
Kauśikī, Tṛtīyā, Niścīrā, and Gaṇḍakī; Ikṣu and Lohita—these all arise from the foot of the Himalaya.
वेदस्मृतिर्वेदवती वृत्रघ्नी सिन्धुरेव च। वर्णाशा चन्दना चैव सतीरा महती तथा ।। ४५.
Veda, Smṛti, Vedavatī, Vṛtraghnī, Sindhur, Varṇāśā, Candanā, Satīrā, and Mahatī as well.
परा चर्म्मण्वती चैव विदिशा वेत्रवत्यपि। शिप्रा ह्यवन्ती च तथा पारियात्राश्रयाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.
Parā, Carmmaṇvatī, Vidiśā, Vetravatī, Śiprā, and Avanti—these are remembered as belonging to the Pāriyātra region.
शोणो महानदश्चैव नर्मदा सुमहाद्रुमा। मन्दाकिनी दशार्णा च चित्रकूटा तथैव च ।। ४५.
Śoṇa, Mahānada, Narmadā with great trees, Mandākinī, Daśārṇā, and also Citrakūṭā.
तमसा पिप्पला श्रोणी करतोया पिशाचिका। नीलोत्पला विपाशा च जम्बुला वालुवाहिनी ।। ४५.
Tamasā, Pippalā, Śroṇī, Karatoyā, Piśācikā, Nīlotpalā, Vipāśā, Jambulā, and Vāluvāhinī.
सितेरजा शुक्तिमती मकुणा त्रिदिवा क्रमात् । ऋक्षपादात् प्रसूतास्ता नद्यो मणिनिभोदकाः ।। ४५.
Siterajā, Śuktimatī, Makuṇā, and Tridivā in order; these rivers, with water like jewels, are born from the foot of Ṛkṣa.
तापी पयोष्णी निर्विन्ध्या मद्रा च निषधा नदी। वेन्वा वैतरणी चैव शितिबाहुः कुमुद्वती ।। ४५.
Tāpī, Payoṣṇī, Nirvindhyā, Madrā, Niṣadhā, Venvā, Vaitaraṇī, Śitibāhu, and Kumudvatī.
तोया चैव महागौरी दुर्गा चान्तशिला तथा। विन्ध्यपादप्रसूताश्च नद्यः पुण्यजलाः शुभाः ।। ४५.
Toyā, Mahāgaurī, Durgā, and Antaśilā; and the rivers born from the foot of the Vindhya, all holy and auspicious.
गोदावरी भीमरथी कृष्णा वैण्यथ वञ्जुला। तुङ्गभद्रा सुप्रयोगा कावेरी च तथापगा। दक्षिणापथनद्यस्तु सह्यपादाद्विनिःसृताः ।। ४५.
Godāvarī, Bhīmarathī, Kṛṣṇā, Vaiṇyā, Vañjulā, Tuṅgabhadrā, Suprayogā, and Kāverī—these rivers of the southern region flow from the foot of the Sahya.
कृतमाला ताम्रवर्णा पुष्पजात्युत्पलावती। मलयाभिजातास्ता नद्यः सर्वाः शीतजलाः शुभाः ।। ४५.
Kṛtamālā, Tāmravarṇā, Puṣpajātī, Utpalāvatī—all these rivers, born from the Malaya mountains, are cool and auspicious.
त्रिसामा ऋतुकुल्या च इक्षुला त्रिदिवा च या। लाङ्गुलिनी वंशधरा महेन्द्रतनयाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.
Trisāmā, Ṛtukulyā, Ikṣulā, Tridivā, Lāṅgulinī, Vaṃśadharā—these are known as the daughters of Mahendra.
ऋषीका सुकुमारी च मन्दगा मन्दवाहिनी। कूपा पलाशिनी चैव शुक्तिमत्प्रभवाः स्मृताः ।। ४५.
Ṛṣīkā, Sukumārī, Mandagā, Mandavāhinī, Kūpā, and Palāśinī—all are said to originate from Śuktimat.
सर्वाः पुण्याः सरस्वत्यः सर्वा गङ्गाः समुद्रगाः । विश्वस्य मातरः सर्वा जगत्पापहराः स्मृताः ।। ४५.
All Sarasvatīs are holy, all Gaṅgās flow to the ocean; all are considered mothers of the world, removers of the world's sins.
तासां नद्युपनद्योऽपि शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। तास्त्विमे कुरुपाञ्चालाः शाल्वाश्चैव सजाङ्गलाः ।। ४५.
Their tributaries and branches are hundreds and thousands; among them are the Kurus, Pāñcālas, Śālvas, and also the Sajāṅgalas.
शूरसेना भद्रकारा बोधाः शतपथेश्वरैः। वत्साः किसष्णाः कुल्याश् च कुन्तलाः काशिकोशलाः ।। ४५.
The Shurasenas, Bhadrakaras, Bodhas, rulers of Shatapathe; Vatsas, Kisasnas, Kulyas, Kuntalas, and the Kashikoshalas.
अथ पार्श्वे तिलङ्गाश्च मगधाश्च वृकैः सह। मध्यदेशा जनपदाः प्रायशोऽमी प्रकीर्तिताः ।। ४५.
Next, on the side, the Tilangas and Magadhas together with the Vrikas; these are mostly the peoples of the central region that have been named.
