ते नामधेयैर्विक्रान्ता विविधाः प्रथिताः भुवि। अध्यासिता जनपदैः कीर्त्तनैश्च विभूषिताः ।। ४४.
They are renowned on earth by their various names, distinguished and celebrated, inhabited by peoples, and adorned with many titles.
तेषां सनामधेयानि राष्ट्राणि विविधानि च। गिर्य्यन्तरनिविष्टानि समेषु विषमेषु च ।। ४४.
Among them are many regions with various names, situated among the mountains, both on level ground and in rugged terrain.
यथैह कथिताः पौरा गोमनुष्यकपोतकाः। तत्सुखा भ्रमरा यूथा माहेयाचलकूटकाः ।। ४४.
Just as the inhabitants here have been described—cows, humans, and pigeons—so too are the bees, herds, and those dwelling on the peaks of Mount Maheya, happy.
सुमौलाः स्तावकाः क्रौञ्चाः कृष्णाङ्गमणिपुञ्जकाः. कूटकम्बलमौषीयाः समुद्रान्तरकास्तथा ।। ४४.
There are also Sumaulas, Stavakas, Krauñcas, clusters of black gemstones, Kūtakaṃbalas, Mauṣīyas, and those living between the oceans.
करम्भवाः कुचाः श्वेताः सुवर्णकटकाः शुभाः। श्वेताङ्गाः कृष्णपादाश्च विहगा कपिलकर्णिकाः ।। ४४.
There are Karambhavas, Kucas, white ones, auspicious golden-banded ones, white-bodied, black-footed birds, and those with tawny ears.
अत्याकरालगोज्वाला हीनानावनपातकाः। महिषाः कुमुदाभाश्च करवाटाः सहोत्कचाः ।। ४४.
There are those with fierce cow-like flames, those lacking, forest-dwellers, buffaloes resembling lotuses, Karavāṭas, and those together with the Utkaças.
शु(नका) कनासा महानासा वनासगजभूमिकाः। करञ्जमञ्जमा वाहाः किष्किण्डीपाण्डुभूमिकीः ।। ४४.
There are Śunakās, Kanāsas, Mahānāsas, those living in forests and elephant lands, Karañjamañjamā vehicles, and those of Kiṣkiṇḍī and pale lands.
कुबेरा धूमजा जङ्गा वङ्गा राजीवकोकिलाः। वाचाङ्गाश्च महाङ्गाश्च मधौरेयाः सुरेचकाः ।। ४४.
There are Kuberas, Dhūmajas, Jaṅgas, Vaṅgas, Rājīva-cuckoos, Vācāṅgas, Mahāṅgas, Madhaureyas, and Surecakas.
पित्तलाः काचलाश्चैव श्रवणा मत्तकासिकाः। गोदावा बकुला वाङ्गा वङ्गका मोदकाः कलाः ।। ४४.
There are Pittalas, Kācalas, Śravaṇas, intoxicated Kāśikas, Godāvas, Bakulas, Vaṅgas, Vaṅgakas, Modakas, and Kalas.
ते पिबन्ति महाभागाः प्रथमान्तु महानदीम्। सुवप्रां पुण्यसलिलां महानागनिषेविताम् ।। ४४.
These greatly fortunate ones drink first from the great river, pure and sacred, whose waters are honored by great sages.
कम्बलां तामसीं श्यामां सुमेधां बकुलां नदीम्। विकीर्णां शिखिमालाञ्च तथा दर्भावतीमपि ।। ४४.
They drink from the Kambalā, Tāmasī, Śyāmā, Sumedhā, Bakulā rivers, the scattered Śikhimālā, and also the Darbhāvatī.
भद्रानदीं शुकनदीं पलाशाञ्च महानदीम्। भीमां प्रभञ्जनां काञ्चीं पुण्याञ्चैव कुशावतीम् ।। ४३.
They drink from the Bhadrā river, Śuka river, Palāśā, the great river, Bhīmā, Prabhañjanā, Kāñcī, and the sacred Kuśāvatī.
दक्षां शाकवतीञ्चैव पुण्यो दाञ्च महानदीम्। चन्द्रावतीं सुमूलाञ्च ऋषभाञ्चापगोत्तमाम् ।। ४४.
They drink from the Dakṣā, Śākavatī, the sacred Dā river, Candrāvatī, Sumūlā, and the excellent Ṛṣabhā river.
नदीं समुद्रमालाञ्च तथा चम्पावतीमपि। एकाक्षां पुष्कलां वाहां सुवर्णां नन्दि नीमपि ।। ४४.
They drink from the Samudramālā river, Campāvatī, Ekākṣā, Puṣkalā, Vāhā, Suvarṇā, and the Nandinī river.
कालिन्दीञ्चैव पुण्योदां भारतीञ्च महानदीम् । सीतोदाम्पातिकां ब्राह्मीं विशालाञ्च महानदीम् ।। ४४.
They drink from the Kālindī, the sacred Puṇyodā, Bhāratī, the great river, Sītodāmpātikā, Brāhmī, and the vast Mahānadī.
पीवरीं कुम्भकारीञ्च रुषा ञ्चैवापगोत्तमाम्। महिषीं मानुषीं दण्डां तथा नदनदीं शुभाम् ।। ४४.
They drink from the Pīvarī, Kumbhakārī, Ruṣā, the excellent river, Mahiṣī, Mānuṣī, Daṇḍā, and the auspicious Nadanadī.
एताञ्चान्याञ्च पीयन्ते बह्वयो हि सरितोत्तमाः । देवर्षिसिद्धचरिताः पुण्योदाः पापहाः शुभाः ।। ४४.
These and many other excellent rivers are drunk by many; sacred, sin-removing, and auspicious, they are celebrated by gods, sages, and siddhas.
नानाजनपदास्फीतं महापगाविभूषितम्। नानारत्नौघसम्पूर्णं नित्यं प्रमुदितं शिवम् ।। ४४.
It is abundant with various peoples, adorned with great rivers, always filled with heaps of various gems, ever joyful and auspicious.
उदीर्णं धनधान्यार्थैर्नरवासैः समन्ततः। सन्निविष्टं महाद्वीपं पश्चिमं सुकृतात्मनाम् । निसर्गः केतुमालानामेष वः परिकीर्त्तितः ।। ४४.
It is flourishing with wealth and grain, inhabited everywhere by people, this great western continent of the virtuous; this is the nature of Ketumālā, as proclaimed to you.
इति श्रीमहापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते भुवनविन्यासो नाम चतुश्वत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-fourth chapter, named 'The Arrangement of Worlds,' spoken by Vāyu in the glorious Mahāpurāṇa.
पूर्वापरौ समाख्यातौ द्वौ देशौ नस्त्वया प्रभो। उत्तराणाञ्च वर्षाणां दक्षिणानाञ्च सर्वशः। आचक्ष्व नो यथातथ्यं ये च पर्वतवासिनः ।। ४५.
O Lord, you have described to us the two regions, eastern and western. Now tell us truthfully about all the northern and southern lands, and also about those who dwell in the mountains.
दक्षिणेन तु श्वेतस्य नीलस्यैवोत्तरेण तु। वर्षं रमणकं नाम जायन्ते तत्र मानवाः ।। ४५.
To the south of Śveta and to the north of Nīla lies the land called Ramaṇaka, where humans are born.
सर्वर्तुकामदाः सत्त्वा जरादुर्गन्धवर्जिताः। शुक्राभिजनसम्पन्नाः सर्वे च प्रियदर्शनाः ।। ४५.
The beings there grant all desires in every season, are free from old age and foul odors, endowed with noble lineage, and all are pleasant to behold.
तत्रापि सुमहान् दिव्यो न्यग्रोधो रोहिणो महान्। तस्य पीत्वा फलरसं पिबन्तो वर्त्तयन्त्युत ।। ४५.
There, too, stands a great and divine banyan tree and a mighty Rohiṇa tree; drinking the juice of their fruits, the people live their lives.
दशवर्षसहस्राणि शतानि दशपञ्च च। जीवन्ति ते महाभागा सदा हृष्टा नरोत्तमाः ।। ४५.
Those blessed and excellent humans live for ten thousand five hundred years, always joyful.
उत्तरेण तु श्वेतस्य श्रृङ्गसाह्वस्य दक्षिणे। वर्षं हिरण्यतं नाम यत्र हैरण्यती नदी ।। ४५.
To the north of Śveta and south of Śṛṅgasāhva lies the land called Hiraṇyata, where the river Hairaṇyatī flows.
महाबलाः सुतेजस्काजायन्तेतत्र मानवाः। सर्वर्तुकामदाः सत्वा धनिनः प्रिय दर्शनाः ।। ४५.
There, powerful and radiant humans are born; the beings grant all desires in every season, are wealthy, and pleasant to behold.
एकादश सहस्राणि वर्षाणां तेऽमितौजसः। आयुष्प्रमाणं जीवन्ति शतानि दशपञ्च च ।। ४५.
Those of immeasurable energy live for eleven thousand five hundred years, which is their span of life.
तस्मिन् वर्षे महावृक्षो लकुचः षड्रसाश्रयः। तस्यपीत्वा फलरसं तत्र जीवन्ति मानवाः ।। ४५.
In that land, there is a great Lakuca tree, which holds all six tastes; by drinking the juice of its fruits, the people live there.
त्रीणि श्रृङ्गवतः श्रृङ्गाण्युच्छ्रितानि महान्ति च । एकं मणिमयं तेषामेकञ्चैव हिरण्ययम्। सर्वरत्न मयं चैकं भवनैरुपशोभितम् ।। ४५.
The mountain Śṛṅgavata has three lofty peaks: one made of gems, one of gold, and one of all precious stones, adorned with palaces.
