नैकैर्महा पक्षिगणैर्गारुडैः शीग्रविक्रमैः। सम्पूर्णवीर्यसम्पन्नैर्दमनैरुरगारिभिः ।। ४०.
There reside many great flocks of Garuḍa birds, swift in their might, full of strength and valor, subduers of serpents.
पक्षिराजस्य भवनं प्रथमं तन्महात्मनः। महावायुप्रवेशस्य शाल्मलि द्वीपवासिनः ।। ४०.
The first palace of the great-souled king of birds is there, the dwelling of the mighty wind, inhabited by those of Śālmalīdvīpa.
तस्यैव चारुमूर्ध्नस्तु कूटेषु च महर्द्धिषु। दक्षिणेषु विचित्रेषु सप्तस्वपि तु शोभिनः ।। ४०.
On its lovely summit, among the peaks of great splendor, on the southern, wondrous seven, all shining brightly.
सन्ध्याभ्राभाः समुदिता रुक्मप्राकारतोरणाः। महाभवनमालाभिः शोभिता देवनिर्मिताः ।। ४०.
Resembling the glow of twilight clouds, with golden ramparts and gateways, adorned with rows of great palaces, all made by the gods.
त्रिंशद्योजनविस्तीर्णाश्चत्वारिंशत्तमायताः। सप्त गन्धर्वनगरा नर नारीसमाकुलाः ।। ४०.
There are seven Gandharva cities, each thirty yojanas wide and forty long, filled with crowds of men and women.
आग्नेया नाम गन्धर्वा महाबलपराक्रमाः। कुबेरानुचरा दीप्तास्तेषान्ते भवनोत्तमाः ।। ४०.
The Gandharvas called Āgneyā, of great strength and valor, attendants of Kubera, resplendent, have their excellent mansions at the end of these.
तस्य चोत्तरकूटेषु भुवनस्य महागिरेः। हर्म्यप्रासादबद्धं च उद्यानवनशोभितम् ।। ४०.
On the northern peaks of that great mountain, there is a city bound with mansions and palaces, beautified with gardens and groves.
पुरमाशीविषैः पुर्णं महाप्राकारतोरणम्। वादित्रशतनिर्घोषैरानन्दितवनान्तरम् ।। ४०.
The city, filled with mighty serpents, has great ramparts and gateways, and its forest outskirts are gladdened by the sounds of hundreds of musical instruments.
दुष्प्रसह्यममित्राणां त्रिंशद्योजनमण्डलम्। नगरं सैंहिकेयानामुदीर्णं देवविद्विषाम्। सिद्धदेवर्षिचरितं देवकूटे निबोधत ।। ४०.
Hear now of the city of the Saiṃhikeya demons, fierce enemies of the gods, spanning thirty yojanas in circumference, raised up by those who hate the gods, and renowned for the deeds of perfected beings, gods, and sages, situated at Devakūṭa.
द्वितीये द्विजशार्दूल मर्य्यादापर्वते शुभे। महाभवनमालाभिर्नानावर्णाभिरावृतम् ।। ४०.
On the second, auspicious mountain called Maryāda, O best of twice-born, there is a great city adorned with splendid mansions, enveloped in many colors.
सुवर्णमणिचित्राभिरनेकाभिरलंकृतम् । विशालरथ्यं दुर्धर्षं नित्यं प्रमुदितं शिवम् ।। ४०.
It is decorated with numerous golden and jeweled ornaments, resplendent with many adornments, possessing broad avenues, unconquerable, ever joyful, and auspicious.
नरनारीगणाकीर्णं प्रांशुप्राकारतोरणम् । षष्टियोजनविस्तीर्णं शतयोजनमायतम् ।। ४०.
Filled with crowds of men and women, with lofty ramparts and gateways, it stretches sixty yojanas in breadth and one hundred yojanas in length.
नगरं कालकेयानामसुराणां दुरासदम्। देवकूटतटे रम्ये सन्निविष्टं सुदुर्जयम्। महाभ्रचयसङ्काशं सुनासन्नाम विश्रुतम् ।। ४०.
This is the city of the Kālakeya asuras, difficult to approach, set beautifully on the slope of Devakūṭa, exceedingly hard to conquer, resembling a mass of great clouds, and famed by the name Sunāsa.
तस्यैव दक्षिणे कूटे विंशद्योजनविस्तरम्। द्विषष्टियोजनायामं हेमप्राकारतोरणम् ।। ४०.
On the southern slope of that same mountain, there is a city twenty yojanas wide and sixty-two yojanas long, with golden ramparts and gateways.
हृष्टपुष्टावलिप्तानामावासाः कामरूपिणाम्। औत्कचानां प्रमुदितं राक्षसानां महापुरम् ।। ४०.
It is the great city of the Autkaca Rākṣasas, who can assume any form at will, whose dwellings are filled with joy, strength, and pride.
मध्यमे तु महाकूटे देवकूटस्य वै गिरेः । सुवर्णमणिपाषाणैश्चित्रैः श्लक्षणतरैः शुभैः। शाखाशतसहस्राद्यैर्नैकारोहसमाकुलम् ।। ४०.
In the middle of the great peak of Devakūṭa mountain, there is a wondrous tree, adorned with golden and jeweled stones, smooth and beautiful, with hundreds of thousands of branches, crowded with countless climbers.
स्रिग्ध पर्णमहामूलमनेकस्कन्धवाहनम्। रम्यं ह्यविरलच्छायं दशयोजनमण्डलम् ।। ४०.
Its leaves are glossy, its trunk immense, bearing many branches, delightful with unbroken shade, and it covers a circle of ten yojanas.
तत्र भूतवटन्नाम नानाभूतगणालयम्। महादेवस्य प्रथितं त्र्यम्बकस्य महात्मनः। दीप्तमायतनं तत्र सर्वलोकेषु विश्रुतम् ।। ४०.
There stands the renowned Bhūtavaṭa, the abode of many hosts of spirits, famous as the shining sanctuary of the great-souled Mahādeva, Tryambaka, celebrated in all the worlds.
वराहगजसिंहर्क्षशार्दूलकरभाननैः। गृध्रोलूकमुखैश्चैव मेषोष्ट्राजमहामुखैः ।। ४०.
There are beings with the faces of boars, elephants, lions, bears, tigers, camels, and the sun, as well as vultures, owls, sheep, camels, and great serpents.
कदम्बैर्विकटैः स्थूलैर्लम्बकेशतनूरुहैः। नानावर्णाकृतिधरैर्नानासंस्थानसंस्थितैः ।। ४०.
There are Kadamba trees, strange and massive, with hanging hair-like roots, of various colors and forms, standing in diverse postures.
दीप्तैरनेकैरुग्रास्यैर्भूतैरुग्रपराक्रमैः। अशून्यमभवन्नित्यं महापारिषदैस्तथा ।। ४०.
It is never empty, always filled with many shining, fierce-faced spirits of great might, and with great attendants as well.
तत्र भूतपतेर्भूता नित्यम्पूजां प्रयुञ्जते। झर्झरैः शङ्खपटहैर्भेरीडिण्डिमगोमुखैः ।। ४०.
There, the spirits of the Lord of Spirits constantly perform worship, with cymbals, conches, drums, kettle-drums, and cow-horn trumpets.
रणितालसितोद्गीतै र्नित्यं वलितवर्जितैः। विस्फूर्ज्जितशतैस्तत्र पूजायुक्ता गणेश्वराः। प्रीताः पुरारिप्रमथास्तत्र क्रीडापराः सदा ।। ४०.
With ringing, rhythmic songs, always free from error, and with hundreds of resounding instruments, the leaders of the hosts are engaged in worship; delighted, the followers of the enemy of Tripura are ever absorbed in play there.
सिद्धदेवर्षिगन्धर्वयक्षनागेन्द्र पूजितः। स्थाने तस्मिन् महादेवः साक्षाल्लोकशिवः शिवः ।। ४०.
In that place, Mahādeva, the very Lord Śiva of the worlds, is worshipped by Siddhas, gods, sages, Gandharvas, Yakṣas, and serpent kings.
इति श्रीमहापुराणे वायुप्रोक्ते भुवनविन्यासो नाम चत्वारिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the fortieth chapter, called the Arrangement of the Worlds, spoken by Vāyu in the glorious Mahāpurāṇa.
विविक्तचारुशिखरं पत्रितं शङ्खवर्चसम्। कैलासं देवभक्तानामालयं सुकृतात्मनाम् ।। ४१.
Kailāsa, with its distinct and beautiful summit, shining like a conch, is the abode of the gods' devotees, the dwelling of those of virtuous soul.
तस्य कूटतटे रम्ये मध्यमे कुन्दसन्निभे। योजनानां शतायामे पञ्चाशच्च तथायतम् ।। ४२.
On the beautiful slope of that peak, in the middle, shining like jasmine, it stretches a hundred yojanas in length and fifty in breadth.
सुवर्णमणिचित्राभि अनेकाभिरलंकृतम्। महाभवनमालाभिर्भूषितं नैकविस्तरम् ।। ४१.
Adorned with countless decorations of gold and jewels, embellished with rows of great mansions, it is vast in extent.
धनाध्यक्षस्य देवस्य कुबेरस्य महात्मनः। नगरन्तदनाधृष्यमृद्धियुक्तं मुदायुतम् ।। ४१.
That is the city of the great-souled god Kubera, lord of wealth, unconquerable, filled with prosperity and joy.
तस्य मध्ये सभा रम्या नानाकनकमण्डिता। विपुला नाम विख्याता विपुलस्तम्भतोरणा ।। ४१.
In its center is a splendid assembly hall, renowned as Vipulā, adorned with various gold ornaments, with lofty pillars and grand gateways.
