पूर्वेण मन्दरो नाम दक्षिणे गन्धमादनः। विपुलः पश्चिमे पार्श्वे सुपार्श्वश्चोत्तरे स्मृतः ।। ३५.
To the east is the mountain called Mandara, to the south Gandhamadana, to the west Vipula, and to the north Supārśva is remembered.
तेषां सहस्रश्रृङ्गेषु वज्रवैढूर्यवेदिकाः। शाखासहस्रकलिताः सुमूलाः सुप्रतिष्ठिताः ।। ३५.
On their thousand peaks are platforms of diamond and beryl, with thousands of branches, well-rooted and firmly established.
स्रिग्धैर्नीलैर्घनैः पर्णैः सञ्झन्नविविधाश्रयाः । अनेकप्रजनोत्सेधा महापुष्पफलोपगाः ।। ३५.
With glossy, dark leaves, they provide shelter for many creatures; they rise with abundant offspring and are endowed with great flowers and fruits.
यक्षगन्धर्वसेव्याश्च सेविताः सिद्धचारणैः। महावृक्षाः समुत्पन्नाश्चत्वारो द्वीपकेतवः ।। ३५.
These great trees, served by yakshas and gandharvas and attended by siddhas and charanas, have arisen as the four banners of the continent.
मन्दरस्य गिरेःश्रृङ्गे महावृक्षः स केतुराट्। आलम्बशाखाशिखरः कन्दरश्चैव पादपः ।। ३५.
On the peak of Mandara mountain stands the great tree, the chief banner; its branches reach the summit, and its trunk forms the base.
महाकुम्भप्रमाणैस्तु पुष्पैर्विकचकेसरैः। महागन्धैर्मनोज्ञैश्च शोभितः सर्वकालजैः ।। ३५.
It is adorned with flowers the size of large pots, with fully opened stamens, and with delightful fragrances, blooming in every season.
सहस्रमधिकं सोऽथ गन्धेनापूरयद्दिशः। योजनानां समन्ताद्वै मन्दमारुतवीजितः ।। ३५.
Then, its fragrance fills the directions for more than a thousand, carried gently by the wind across yojanas all around.
वरकेतुरेव प्रथितो भद्राश्वो नाम यो द्विजाः। यत्र साक्षात् हृषीकेशः सिद्धसङ्घैर्महीयते ।। ३५.
That chief banner is renowned as Bhadrāśva, O twice-born; where Hṛṣīkeśa is honored in person by assemblies of siddhas.
तस्य रुद्रकदम्बस्य तदा श्वेतहरो हरिः । प्राप्तवानपरश्रेष्ठः स तत्र सहितः पुरा ।। ३५.
There, at the rudrakadamba tree, the white-necked Hari once arrived, the foremost among others, together with them in ancient times.
तेन चालोकितं सर्वं द्वीपं द्विपदनायकाः। यस्य नाम्ना समाख्यातो भद्राश्वो नाम नामतः ।। ३५.
By him, all the continent was observed, O leaders of men, and by his name it is called Bhadrāśva.
दक्षिणस्यापि शैलस्य शिखरे देवसेविता। जम्बूः सदा पुष्पफला सदा माल्योपशोभिता ।। ३५.
On the summit of the southern mountain, worshipped by the gods, the jambū tree always bears flowers and fruits, always adorned with garlands.
महामूलैर्महास्कन्धैः स्निग्धवर्णैर्विभूषिता। नवैः सदा पुष्पफलैः शाखाभिश्चोपशोभिता ।। ३५.
It is embellished with massive roots and great trunks, with glossy hues, and always beautified by fresh flowers and fruits and its branches.
तस्या ह्यतिप्रमाणानि स्वादूनि च मृदूनि च। फलान्यमृतकल्पानि पतन्ति गिरिमूर्द्धनि ।। ३५.
Its fruits are exceedingly large, sweet, and soft, nectar-like, and they fall upon the mountain's summit.
तस्माद्गिरिवरप्रस्थात् पुनः प्रस्यन्दवाहिनी। नदी जम्बूनदी नाम प्रवृत्ता मधुवाहिनी ।। ३५.
From that mountain's plateau flows again a stream, called the Jambū river, which carries honey.
तत्र जाम्बूनदन्नाम सुवर्णं ज्वलनप्रभम्। देवालङ्कारमतुलं जायते पापनाशनम् ।। ३५.
There, the gold called Jāmbūnada, shining like fire, is produced; it is an incomparable ornament for the gods and destroys sin.
देवदानवगन्धर्वा यक्षराक्षसपन्नगाः। यत् पिबन्त्यमृतप्रख्यं मधु जाम्भूरसस्रवम् ।। ३५.
The gods, demons, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, and serpents drink the honey flowing from the Jāmbū tree, which is like nectar.
स केतुर्दक्षिणे द्वीपे जम्भूर्लोकेषु विश्रुता। यस्या नाम्ना स विख्यातो जम्भूद्वीपः सनातनः ।। ३५.
That banner on the southern continent is the Jāmbū tree, renowned among worlds; by its name, the eternal Jāmbūdvīpa is famous.
विपुलस्यापि शैलस्य पश्चिमस्य महात्मनः। जातः श्रृङ्गेऽतिसुमहानश्वत्थ श्चैव पादपः ।। ३५.
On the summit of the vast and noble western mountain, a very great Ashvattha tree has grown.
विलम्बिवरमालाद्यः सुवर्णमणिवेदिकः। महोच्चस्कन्धविटपो नैकसत्त्वगुणालयः ।। ३५.
Adorned with a splendid garland, with a platform of gold and gems, its trunk and branches are lofty, and it is the abode of many virtuous beings.
कुम्भप्रमाणैः सुखदैः फलैः सर्वर्त्तुकैः शुभैः। स केतुः केतुमालानां देवगन्धर्वसेवितः ।। ३५.
That banner, served by gods and gandharvas, bears fruits as large as jars, delightful, auspicious, and suitable for all seasons.
केतुमालेति च यथा तस्या नाम प्रकीर्तितम्। तन्निबोधत विप्रेन्द्रा निरुक्तं नाम कर्मतः ।। ३५.
As its name Ketumāla has been proclaimed, O foremost of Brahmins, listen to the etymology and meaning of that name.
क्षीरोदमथने वृत्ते दैत्यपक्षे पराजिते। महासमरसम्मर्दवृक्षक्षोभविमर्दिता ।। ३५.
When the churning of the ocean of milk occurred and the demons were defeated, the tree was shaken and battered in the great battle.
सहस्राक्षेण विहिता माला तस्य सुतानिता। तस्य स्कन्धे समासक्त्या ह्यश्वत्थस्य वनस्पतेः ।। ३५.
Indra, the thousand-eyed, made a garland from its offspring, and by attaching it to the trunk of the Ashvattha tree, adorned the tree.
सा तथैव महागन्धा ह्यम्लाना सर्वकामिकी। इज्यते सुमहाभागा विविधैः सिद्धचारणैः ।। ३५.
That garland, possessing a great fragrance, never withers and fulfills all desires; it is worshipped by the highly fortunate, by various accomplished beings and celestial wanderers.
तस्य केतोः सदा माला देवदत्ता विराजते। पवनेनेरिता दिव्यं वाति गन्धं मनोरमम् ।। ३५.
The garland of that banner, always shining, is given by the gods; stirred by the wind, it emits a divine and delightful fragrance.
ताभ्यां नामाङ्कितो द्वीपः पश्चिमे बहुविस्तरः। केतुमाल इति ख्यातो दिवि चेह च सर्वशः ।। ३५.
Marked by those two names, the continent in the west, vast in extent, is known everywhere in heaven and here as Ketumāla.
स्वपार्श्वस्योत्तरे चापि श्रृङ्गे जातो महाद्रुमः । न्यग्रोधो विपुलस्कन्धोऽनेकयोजनमण्डलः ।। ३५.
On the northern summit of its own side, a great tree has grown—a banyan with a vast trunk and a circumference of many yojanas.
माल्यदामकलापैश्च विविधैर्गन्धशालिभिः। शाकाविलम्बी शुशुभे सिद्धचारणसेवितः ।। ३५.
Adorned with garlands, wreaths, and various fragrant grains, its branches hang down beautifully, and it is served by accomplished beings and celestial wanderers.
प्रवालकुम्भसदृशैर्मधुपूर्णैः फलैः सदा। स ह्युत्तर कुरूणान्तु केतुवृक्षः प्रकाशते ।। ३५.
With fruits always filled with honey, resembling coral jars, that Ketuvṛkṣa shines forth among the northern Kurus.
सनत्कुमारावरजा मानसा ब्रह्मणः सुताः। सप्त तत्र महाभागाः कुरवो नाम विश्रुताः ।। ३५.
The sons of Brahma, born from the mind and younger brothers of Sanatkumāra, seven in number and highly fortunate, are renowned there as the Kurus.
