नाभेस्तु दक्षिणं वर्षं हिमाद्वन्तु पिता ददौ । हेम कूटं तु यद्वर्षं ददौ किम्पुरुषाय तत् ।। ३३.
The southern region from Nābhi, called Himāhva, the father gave; and the region called Hemakūṭa, he gave to Kimpuruṣa.
नैषधं यत् स्मृतं वर्षं हरिवर्षाय तद्ददौ। मध्यमं यत्सुमेरोस्तु स ददौ तदिलावृते ।। ३३.
The region known as Naiṣadha, he gave to Harivarṣa; and the central part of Sumeru, he gave to Ilāvṛta.
नीलन्तु यत् स्मृतं वर्षं रम्यायैतत् पिता ददौ । श्वेतं यदुत्तरं तस्मात् पित्रा दत्तं हरिन्मते ।। ३३.
The region called Nīla, the father gave to Ramyā; and the northern Śveta, O wise one, was given by the father as well.
यदुत्तरं श्रृङ्गवतो वर्ष तत् कुरवे ददौ । वर्षं माल्यवत श्चापि भद्राश्वाय न्यवेदयत् ।। ३३.
The northern region of Śṛṅgavān he gave to Kuru; and the region of Mālyavat he entrusted to Bhadrāśva.
गन्धमादनवर्षन्तु केतुमाले न्यवेदयत्। इत्येतानि महान्तीह नववर्षाणि भागशः ।। ३३.
The region of Gandhamādana he assigned to Ketumāla; thus these are the great nine regions, each allotted in turn.
आग्नीध्रस्तेषु सर्वेषु पुत्रांस्तानभ्यषिञ्चत। यथाक्रमं स धर्मात्मा ततस्तु तपसि स्थितः ।। ३३.
Āgnīdhra installed all his sons over these regions in due order, that righteous soul, and then remained engaged in austerity.
इत्येतैः सप्भिः कृत्स्नाः सप्तद्वीपा निवेशिताः । प्रियव्रतस्य पुत्रैस्तैः पौत्रैः स्वायम्भुवस्य तु ।। ३३.
Thus, by these sons, all the seven continents were settled, by the sons and grandsons of Priyavrata, the descendant of Svāyambhuva.
यानि किम्पुरुषाद्यानि वर्षाण्यष्टौ शुभानि तु। तेषां स्वभावतः सिद्धिः सुखप्राया ह्ययत्नतः ।। ३३.
The eight auspicious regions, beginning with Kimpuruṣa, naturally attain fulfillment for their inhabitants, who mostly enjoy happiness effortlessly.
विपर्ययो न तेष्वस्ति जरामृत्युभयं न च । धर्माधर्मौ न तेष्वास्तां नोत्तमाधममध्यमाः । न तेष्वस्ति युगावस्था क्षेत्रेष्वेव तु सर्वशः ।। ३३.
There is no reversal for them, nor old age or death; for them, there is neither righteousness nor unrighteousness, nor higher, lower, or middle status; nor is there any change of ages, but only in the lands themselves.
नाभेर्हि सर्गं वक्ष्यामि हिमाह्वे तन्निबोधत। नाभिस्त्वजनयत् पुत्रं मेऱुदेव्यां महाद्युतिः। ऋषभं पार्थिवश्रेष्ठं सर्वक्षत्रस्य पूर्वजम् ।। ३३.
Now I shall speak of the creation from Nābhi; listen to this concerning Himāhva. Nābhi, of great splendor, begot a son by Merudevī, Ṛṣabha, foremost among kings and ancestor of all Kṣatriyas.
ऋषभाद्भरतो जज्ञे वीरः पुत्रशताग्रजः। सोऽभिषिच्याथ भरतः पुत्रं प्राव्राज्यमास्थितः ।। ३३.
From Ṛṣabha was born Bharata, a heroic son, eldest among a hundred sons; and after installing his son, Bharata withdrew to the forest.
हिमाह्वं दक्षिणं वर्षं भरताय न्यवेदयत्। तस्मात्तद्भारतं वर्षं तस्य नाम्ना विदुर्बुधाः ।। ३३.
The southern region called Himāhva was entrusted to Bharata; therefore, that region is known by the wise as Bhārata after his name.
भरतस्यात्मजो विद्वान् सुमतिर्नाम धार्मिकः। बभूव तस्मिंस्तद्राज्यं भरतः संन्ययोजयत्। पुत्र संक्रामितश्रीको वनं राजा विवेश सः ।। ३३.
Bharata's own son was the learned and righteous Sumati; to him, Bharata entrusted the kingdom, and, having transferred his royal fortune to his son, the king entered the forest.
तेजसस्तु सुतश्चापि प्रजापतिरमित्रजित्। तैजसस्यात्मजो विद्वानिन्द्रद्युम्न इति श्रुतः ।। ३३.
Sumati's son was the illustrious Prajāpati Amitrajit; Amitrajit's son, renowned for wisdom, was Indradyumna.
परमेष्ठी सुतश्चाथ निधने तस्य शोभनः । प्रतीहारकुले तस्य नाम्ना जज्ञे तदन्वयात्। प्रतिहर्त्तेति विख्यातो जज्ञे तस्यापि धीमतः ।। ३३.
Indradyumna's son was Parameṣṭhī, and at his death, Śobhana was born in the family of Pratīhāra; from his line, the wise Pratihartā was born.
उन्नेता प्रतिहर्त्तुस्तु भुवस्तस्य सुतः स्मृतः । उद्गीथस्तस्य पुत्रोऽभूत्प्रताविश्चापि तत्सुतः ।। ३३.
From Pratihartā, Unnetā was born, remembered as his son; Unnetā's son was Udgītha, and Udgītha's son was Pratāvi.
प्रतावेस्तु विभुः पुत्रः पृथुस्तस्य सुतो मतः । पृथोश्चापि सुतो नक्तो नक्तस्यापि गयः स्मृतः ।। ३३.
Pratāvi's son was Vibhu, and his son was Pṛthu; Pṛthu's son was Nakta, and Nakta's son was Gaya.
गयस्य तु नरः पुत्रो नरस्यापि सुतो विराट्। विराट्सुतो महावीर्यो दीमांस्तस्य सुतोऽभवत् ।। ३३.
Gaya's son was Nara, and Nara's son was Virāṭ; Virāṭ's son, of great might, was Dīmant.
धीमतश्च महान् पुत्रो महतश्चापि भौवनः। भौवनस्य सुतस्त्वष्टा अरिजस्तस्य चात्मजः ।। ३३.
The wise one had a great son, and Bhauvana was also great; Bhauvana's son was Tvaṣṭā, and Arija was his son.
अरिजस्य रजः पुत्रः शतजिद्रजसो मतः। तस्य पुत्रशतं त्वासीद्राजानः सर्व एव ते ।। ३३.
Arija's son was Rajaḥ, and Śatajid is known as Rajaḥ's son; he had a hundred sons, all of whom were kings.
विश्वज्योतिः प्रधानायैस्तैरिमा वर्द्धिताः प्रजाः। तैरिदं भारतं वर्षं सप्तखण्डं कृतं पुरा ।। ३३.
Viśvajyotiḥ and the foremost among them caused these peoples to flourish; by them, this land of Bhārata was formerly divided into seven regions.
तेषां वंशप्रकूतैस्तु भुक्तेयं भारती धरा। कृतत्रेतादियुक्तानि युगाख्यान्येकसप्ततिः ।। ३३.
Through the descendants of their lineages, this Bhārata land has been enjoyed; seventy-one ages named Kṛta, Tretā, and others have passed.
येऽतीतास्तैर्युगैः सार्द्धं राजानस्ते तदन्वयाः। स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे पूर्वं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।। ३३.
Those kings and their descendants who have passed along with those ages, in the previous Svāyambhuva interval, numbered in the hundreds and thousands.
एष स्वायम्भुवः सर्गो येनेदं पूरितं जगत्। ऋषिभिर्दैवतैश्चापि पितृगन्धर्वराक्षसैः ।। ३३.
This is the Svāyambhuva creation, by which the world was filled—with sages, gods, ancestors, gandharvas, and rākṣasas.
यक्षभूतपिशाचैश्च मनुष्यमृगपक्षिभिः । तैषां सृष्टिरियं लोके युगैः सह विवर्त्तते ।। ३३.
With yakṣas, bhūtas, piśācas, humans, beasts, and birds; their creation in this world evolves together with the ages.
एवं प्रजासन्निवेशं श्रुत्वा च ऋषिपुङ्गवः। पप्रच्छ निपुणः सूतं पृथिव्यायाम विस्तरौ ।। ३४.
Having heard this account of the arrangement of peoples, the eminent sage skillfully questioned the Sūta about the extent and breadth of the earth.
कति द्वीपाः समुद्रा वा पर्वताश्च कति प्रभोः। कियन्ति चैव वर्षाणि तेषु नद्यश्च काः स्मृताः ।। ३४.
How many continents and oceans are there, and how many mountains, O lord? How many regions are there, and which rivers are remembered in them?
महाभूतप्रमाणञ्च लोका लोकौ तथैव च। पर्यायपारिमाण्यञ्च गतिश्चन्द्रार्कयोस्तथा। एतत् प्रब्रूहि नः सर्वं विस्तरेण यथा तथा ।। ३४.
What is the measure of the great elements, and of the worlds and Lokāloka? What are their alternate extents, and what is the course of the moon and sun? Tell us all this in detail, just as it is.
अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि पृथिव्यायामविस्तरम्। सङ्ख्याश्चैव समुद्राणां द्वीपानाञ्चैव विस्तरम् ।। ३४.
Now I shall declare the breadth of the earth, and also the number of oceans and the extent of the continents.
यावन्ति चैव वर्षाणि तेषु नद्यश्च याः स्मृताः। महाभूतप्रमाणञ्च लोकालोकौ तथैव च। पर्यायपारिमाण्यञ्च गतिश्चन्द्रार्कयोस्तथा ।। ३४.
How many regions there are, and which rivers are remembered in them; the measure of the great elements, and of the worlds and Lokāloka; their alternate extents, and the course of the moon and sun.
