ब्रह्मणो मानसाः कन्याः शोभयन्त्यो मनोः सुताः। वेगवन्त्यस्त्वरिष्टाया ऊर्ज्जायाश्चाग्निसम्भवाः ॥ ८.
The mind-born daughters of Brahmā, radiant, became the daughters of Manu; the swift ones of Tvaritā, the energetic ones of Ūrjjā, and those born from Agni.
आयुष्मन्त्यश्च सूर्यस्य रश्मिजाताः सुभा स्वराः। वारिजा ह्यमृतोत्पन्ना अमृता नामतः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
The long-lived ones are daughters of Sūrya, born from his rays, shining and melodious; the water-born, arisen from nectar, are called Amṛtā by name.
वायूत्पन्ना मुदा नाम भूमिजाता भवास्तु वै । विद्युतश्च रुचो नाम मृत्योः कन्याश्च भैरवाः ॥ ८.
Those born from Vāyu are called Mudā; those born from the earth are Bhavā; from lightning, the daughters named Rucā; and the daughters of Mṛtyu are the Bhairavās.
शोभयन्त्यः कामगुणा गणाः प्रोक्ताश्चतुर्द्दश। सेन्द्रोपेन्द्रैः सुरगणैः रूपातिशयनिर्मिताः ॥ ८.
The radiant ones, endowed with the qualities of desire, are said to be fourteen groups, created with forms surpassing beauty, together with Indra, Upendra, and the hosts of gods.
शुभरूपा महाभागा दिव्या नारी तिलोत्तमा। ब्रह्मणश्चाग्निकुण्डाच्च देवनारी प्रभावती। रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना उत्पन्ना लोकविश्रुता ॥ ८.
Tilottamā, of auspicious form, great fortune, and divine nature, is a celestial woman; Prabhāvatī, born from Brahmā’s fire-altar, is a goddess famed in the worlds, endowed with beauty and youth.
वे दीतलसमुत्पन्ना चतुर्वक्त्रस्य धीमतः। नाम्ना वेदवती नाम सुरनारी महाप्रभा ॥ ८.
Born from the Vedic altar of the wise four-faced one, the celestial woman of great radiance is known by the name Vedavatī.
तथा यमस्य दुहिता रूपयौवनशालिनी। वरहेमविभा हेमा देवनारी सुलोचना ॥ ८.
Likewise, Hemā, the daughter of Yama, endowed with beauty and youth, adorned with excellent gold, is a celestial woman with lovely eyes.
इत्येते बहुसाहस्रं भास्वरा ह्यप्सरोगणाः। देवतानामृषीणाञ्च पत्न्यस्ता मातरश्च ह ॥ ८.
Thus, these shining hosts of Apsarases, numbering in the thousands, are wives and mothers of the gods and sages.
सुगन्धाश्चम्पवर्णाश्च सर्वाश्चाप्सरसः समाः। सम्प्रयोगे तु कान्तेन माद्यन्ति मदिरां विना। तासामाप्यायते स्पर्शादानन्दश्च विवर्द्धते ॥ ८.
All the Apsarases are fragrant and beautiful in appearance, equal among themselves; when united with a beloved, they become intoxicated without wine, and by their touch, joy increases and delight grows.
पर्वते नारदे पूर्वं रेतः स्कन्नं प्रजापतेः। पर्वतस्तत्र संभूतो नारदश्चैव तावुभौ॥ तयोर्यवीयसी चैव तृतीयारन्धती स्मृता। देवरुख्यो सूर्यजन्म तस्मिन्नारदपर्वतौ॥(पाठभेदः) विनतायास्तु पुत्रौ द्वावरुणो गरुडश्च ह। षट्त्रिंशत्तु स्वसारश्च यवीयस्यस्तु ताः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
On the mountain, formerly, the seed of Prajāpati was shed; from that, Parvata and Nārada were born, and their younger sister is remembered as Arundhatī. The daughters of Yavīyasī, thirty-six in number, are known as the sisters; Vinatā bore two sons, Aruṇa and Garuḍa, and those sisters are remembered as the younger ones.
गायत्र्यादीनि च्छन्दांसि सौपर्णेयाश्च पक्षिणः। इत्येवाहानि सर्वाणि दिक्षु सन्निहितानि च ॥ ८.
The metres beginning with Gāyatrī, and the Suparṇeya birds, as well as all the days, are established in all directions.
कद्रूर्नागसहस्रं वै चरा चरमजीजनत् । अनेकशिरसां तेषां खेचराणां महात्मनाम्। बहुधानामधेयानां प्रायशस्तु निबोधत ॥ ८.
Kadrū gave birth to a thousand serpents, moving and unmoving, with many heads, great souls who move in the sky, bearing many names; listen now to their principal ones.
तेषां प्रधाननागाश्च शेषवासुकितक्षकाः। सकणीरश्च जम्भश्च अञ्जनो वामनस्तथा ॥ ८.
Among them, the chief serpents are Śeṣa, Vāsuki, Takṣaka, Sakaṇīra, Jambha, Añjana, and likewise Vāmana.
ऐरावतमहापझौ कम्बलाश्वतरावुभौ। ऐलपत्रश्च शङ्खश्च कर्कोटकधनञ्जयौ ॥ ८.
Airāvata, Mahāpajha, Kambala, and Aśvatara, Ailapatra, Śaṅkha, Karkoṭaka, and Dhanañjaya.
महाकर्णो महानीलो धृतराष्ट्रबलाहकौ। कुमारः पुष्पदन्तश्च सुमुखो दुर्मुखस्तथा ॥ ८.

शिलीमुखो दधिमुखः कालीयः शालिपिण्डकः । बिन्दुपादः पुण्डरीको नागश्चापूरणस्तथा ॥ ८.
Śilīmukha, Dadhimukha, Kāliya, Śālipiṇḍaka, Bindupāda, Puṇḍarīka, and the serpent Āpūraṇa.
कपिलश्चाम्बरीषश्च धृतपादश्च कच्छपः । प्रह्लादः पझचित्रश्च गन्धर्वोऽथ नमस्विकः ॥ ८.
Kapila, Ambarīṣa, Dhṛtapāda, Kacchapa, Prahlāda, Pajhacitra, the Gandharva, and Namasvika.
नहुषः खररोमा च मणिरित्येवमादयः। काद्रवेया मया ख्याताः खशायांस्तु निबोधत ॥ ८.
Nahuṣa, Khararomā, and Maṇi—these are the renowned Kādraveyas; now listen to those among the Khaśas.
खशा विजज्ञे पुत्रौ द्वौ विश्रुतौ पुरुषादकौ। ज्येष्ठं पश्चिमसङ्ख्यायां पूर्वस्यां मनुजास्तथा ॥ ८.
From Khasha were born two sons, both renowned as devourers of men; the elder in the western line, and the younger among the people of the east.
विलोहितं विकर्णञ्च पूर्वं साऽजनयत् सुतम्। चतुर्भुजं चतुष्पादं द्विमूर्द्धानं द्विधागतिम् ॥ ८.
She first gave birth to a son named Vilohita Vikarṇa, who had four arms, four legs, two heads, and moved in two ways.
सर्वाङ्गकेशं स्थूलाङ्गं तुङ्गनासं महोदरम्। स्थूलशीर्षं महाकर्णं मुञ्जाकेशं मनोरथम् ॥ ८.
He had hair all over his body, massive limbs, a prominent nose, a huge belly, a large head, great ears, hair like munja grass, and a mind full of desires.
हस्त्योष्ठं दीर्घजङ्घञ्च अश्वदंष्ठ्रं महाहनुम्। रक्तजिह्वं जटाक्षञ्च स्थूलास्यं दीर्घनासिकम् ॥ ८.
With lips like an elephant, long thighs, fangs like a horse, a great jaw, a red tongue, matted eyes, a broad mouth, and a long nose.
गुह्यकं शितिकर्णञ्च महानन्दं महामुखम्। एवंविधं खशापुत्रं विजज्ञे साऽतिभीषणम् ॥ ८.
He was a guhyaka, with sharp ears, exceedingly joyful, with a huge mouth; thus was born to Khasha a son of such terrifying form.
तस्यानुजं द्वितीयन्तु खशा चैव व्यजायत। त्रिशीर्षञ्च त्रिपादञ्च त्रिहस्तं कृष्णलोचनम् ॥ ८.
Khasha then gave birth to a second son, his younger brother, who had three heads, three legs, three arms, and dark eyes.
ऊर्द्ध्वकेशं हरिच्छ्मश्रुं शिलासंहननं दृढम् । ह्रस्व कायं सुबाहुञ्च महाकायं महाबलम् ॥ ८.
With hair standing upright, tawny beard, a jaw as hard as stone, a short body, strong arms, a huge frame, and great strength.
आकर्णदारितास्यञ्च लम्बभ्रूं स्थूलनासिकम्। स्थूलोष्ठमष्टदंष्ट्रञ्च द्विजिह्वं शङ्कुकर्णकम् ॥ ८.
With a mouth torn up to the ears, drooping brows, a broad nose, thick lips, eight fangs, two tongues, and ears shaped like conch shells.
पिङ्गलोद्वृत्तनयनं जटिलं पिङ्गलं तथा। महाकर्णं महोरस्कं कटिहीनं कृशोदरम्। नखिनं लोहितग्रीवं सा कनिष्ठं प्रसूयते ॥ ८.
With tawny, protruding eyes, matted and tawny hair, great ears, a broad chest, lacking hips, a thin belly, clawed hands, and a red neck—such was the youngest son she bore.
सद्यः प्रसूयमात्रौ तु विवृद्धौ च प्रमाणतः। उपभोगसमर्थाभ्यां शरीराभ्यामुपस्थितौ। सद्योजातविवृद्धाङ्गौ मातरं पर्यभूष्यताम् ॥ ८.
As soon as they were born, they grew to full size, and with bodies fit for enjoyment, they stood ready; their limbs matured instantly, and they surrounded their mother.
ज्यायांस्तयोस्तु यः क्रूरो मातरं सोऽभ्यकर्षत। अब्रवीन्मातरायाहि भक्षार्थे क्षुधयार्द्दितः ॥ ८.
Of the two, the elder, who was fierce, seized his mother, saying, 'Come, mother, I am tormented by hunger and wish to eat.'
न्यषेधयत् पुनर्ह्येनं ज्यायांसन्तु कनिष्ठकः। अब्रवीत् सोऽसकृत्तं वै रक्षेमां मातरं खशाम्। बाहुभ्यां परिगृह्यैनं मातरं तां व्यमोचयत् ॥ ८.
But the younger restrained the elder again and again, saying, 'Let us protect our mother Khasha.' Embracing him with his arms, he freed their mother.
