चत्वार्याहुः सहस्राणि वर्षाणां च कृतं युगम् । तस्य तावच्छती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च तथाविधः ।। ३२.
They say the Kṛta Yuga consists of four thousand years; its dawn (sandhyā) is of such a hundred, and the twilight (sandhyāṃśa) is likewise.
कृते वै प्रक्रियापादश्चतुःसाहस्र उच्यते। तस्माच्चतुःशतं सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशश्च यथाविधः ।। ३२.
In the Kṛta, the foundational period is said to be four thousand; from that, four hundred is the dawn, and the twilight is of the same measure.
त्रेतादीनि सहस्राणि संख्यया मुनिभिः सह। तस्यापि त्रिशती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशस्त्रिशतः स्मृतः ।। ३२.
The Tretā and the others are counted in thousands along with the sages; for that too, three hundred is the dawn, and the twilight is remembered as three hundred.
अनुषङ्गपादस्त्रेतायास्त्रिसाहस्रस्तु सङ्ख्यया। द्वापरे द्वे सहस्रे तु वर्षाणां सम्प्रकीर्तितम् ।। ३२.
The subsequent period of Tretā is reckoned as three thousand; in Dvāpara, it is declared to be two thousand years.
तस्यापि द्विशती सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशो द्विशतस्तथा। उपोद्वातस्तृतीयस्तु द्वापरे पाद उच्यते ।। ३२.
For that too, two hundred is the dawn, and the twilight is likewise two hundred; the third quarter in Dvāpara is called the upodvāta.
कलिं वर्षसहस्रन्तु प्राहुः सङ्ख्याविदो जनाः। तस्यापि शतिका सन्ध्या सन्ध्यांशः शतमेव च ।। ३२.
Those who know numbers declare Kali to be of one thousand years; for that too, the dawn is one hundred, and the twilight is also one hundred.
संहारपादः संख्यातश्वतुर्थो वै कलौ युगे। ससन्ध्यानि सहांशानि चत्वारि तु युगानि वै ।। ३२.
The fourth, called the period of dissolution, is reckoned in Kali Yuga; thus, with their dawns and twilights, there are indeed four Yugas.
एतद् द्वादशसाहस्रं चतुर्युगमिति स्मृतम्। एवं पादैः सहस्राणि श्लोकानां पञ्च पञ्च च ।। ३२.
This set of four Yugas is remembered as twelve thousand (years); likewise, with their quarters, there are five thousand verses.
सन्ध्यासन्ध्यांशकैरेव द्वे सहस्रे तथाऽपरे। एवं द्वादशसाहस्रं पुराणं कवयो विदुः ।। ३२.
With the dawns and twilights, there are also two thousand more; thus, the poets know the Purāṇa to be of twelve thousand (verses).
यथा वेदश्चतुष्पादश्चतुष्पादं तथा युगम्। यथा युगं चतुष्पादं विधात्रा विहितं स्वयम्। छचतुष्पादं सुराणान्तु ब्रह्मणा विहितं पुरा ।। ३२.
Just as the Veda is fourfold, so too is the Yuga fourfold; as the fourfold Yuga was established by the Creator, so too was the fourfold division for the gods ordained by Brahmā in ancient times.
मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु अतीतानागतेष्विह। तुल्याभिमानिनः सर्वे जायन्ते नामरूपतः ।। ३३.
In all the Manvantaras, past and future, here, all are born with equal pride, distinguished by name and form.
देवाश्च विविधा ये च तस्मिन् मन्वन्तरेऽधिपाः। ऋषयो मानवाश्चैव सर्वे तुल्याभिमानिनः ।। ३३.
The various gods and those who are rulers in that Manvantara, as well as the seers and Manus, all are born with equal pride.
महर्षिसर्गः प्रोक्तो वै वंशं स्वायम्भुवस्य तु। विस्तरेणानुपूर्व्या च कीर्त्त्यमानं निबोधत ।। ३३.
The creation of the great seers has been described; now listen to the detailed and sequential account of the lineage of Svāyambhuva.
मनोः स्वायम्भुवस्यासन् दश पौत्रास्तु तत्समाः. यैरियं पृथिवी सर्वा सप्तद्वीपसमन्विता ।। ३३.
Manu Svāyambhuva had ten grandsons, equal to him, by whom this entire earth, endowed with seven continents, was populated.
ससमुद्राकरवती प्रतिवर्षन्निवेशिता। स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे पूर्वमाद्ये त्रेतायुगे तदा ।। ३३.
In the first Treta Yuga of the Svayambhuva Manvantara, this earth, with its oceans, was established in its present form.
प्रियव्रतस्य पुत्रैस्तैः पौत्रैः स्वायम्भुवस्य तु। प्रजासर्गतपोयोगैस्तैरियं विनिवेशिता ।। ३३.
By the sons and grandsons of Priyavrata, and of Svayambhuva, through their creation of beings and practice of austerities, this world was arranged.
प्रियव्रतात् प्रजावन्तः वीरात् कन्या व्यजायत। कन्या सा तु महाभागा कर्द्दमस्य प्रजापतेः ।। ३३.
From Priyavrata, who was rich in offspring, a daughter named Kanyā was born; that illustrious Kanyā became the wife of the Prajapati Kardama.
कन्ये द्वे शतपुत्रांश्च सम्राट् कुक्षिश्च ते उभे। तर्योर्वै भ्रातरः शूराः प्रजापतिसमा दश ।। ३३.
There were two daughters and a hundred sons born to the emperor; among them, ten brothers, equal to Prajapatis, were valiant.
अग्नीध्रश्चवपुष्मांश्च मेधा मेधातिथिर्विभुः। ज्योतिष्मान् द्युतिमान् हव्यः सवनः सर्व एव च ।। ३३.
Agnīdhra, Vapuṣmān, Medha, Medhātithi, Vibhu, Jyotiṣmān, Dyutimān, Havya, Savana, and Sarva—these were the ten.
प्रियव्रतोऽभिषिच्यैतान् सप्त सप्तसु पार्थिवान्। द्वीपेषु तेषु धर्मेण द्वीपांस्तांश्च निबोधत ।। ३३.
Priyavrata anointed these seven as kings over the seven continents; learn now the names of those continents and their rulers.
जम्बूद्वीपेश्वरं चक्रे अग्नीध्रन्तु महाबलम्। प्लक्षद्वीपेश्वरश्चापि तेन मेधातिथिः कृतः ।। ३३.
He made the mighty Agnīdhra the lord of Jambūdvīpa, and Medhātithi was appointed by him as the ruler of Plakṣadvīpa.
शाल्मलौ तु वपुष्मन्तं राजानमभिषिक्तवान्। ज्योतिष्मन्तं कुशद्वीपे राजानं कृतवान् प्रभुः ।। ३३.
Vapuṣmān was consecrated as king of Śālmaladvīpa, and Jyotiṣmān was made the ruler of Kuśadvīpa by the lord.
द्युतिमन्तञ्च राजानं क्रौज्चद्वीपे समादिशत्। शाकद्वीपेश्वरञ्चापि हव्यञ्चक्रे प्रियव्रतः ।। ३३.
Dyutimān was appointed as king of Krauncadvīpa, and Priyavrata made Havya the lord of Śākadvīpa.
पुष्कराधिपतिञ्चापि सवनं कृतवान् प्रभुः। पुष्करे सवनस्यापि महावीतः सुतोऽभवत्। धातकिश्चैव द्वावेतौ पुत्रौ पुत्रवतां वरो ।। ३३.
The lord made Savana the ruler of Puṣkaradvīpa; to Savana in Puṣkara were born two sons, Mahāvīta and Dhātaki, both eminent among those with sons.
महावीतं स्मृतं वर्षं तस्य नाम्ना महात्मनः। नाम्ना तु धातकेश्चापि धातकीखण्ड उच्यते ।। ३३.
The region named after that great soul is called Mahāvīta, and the land of Dhātaki is known as Dhātakīkhaṇḍa.
हव्यो व्यजनयत् पुत्रान् शाकद्वीपेश्वरान् प्रभुः। जलदञ्च कुमारञ्च सुकुमारं मणीचकम्। वसुमोदं सुमोदाकं सप्तमञ्च महाद्रुमम् ।। ३३.
Havya, the lord of Śākadvīpa, begot sons: Jalada, Kumāra, Sukumāra, Maṇīcaka, Vasumoda, Sumodāka, and the seventh, Mahādruma.
जलदं जलदस्याथ वर्षं प्रथममुच्यते। कुमारस्य च कौमारं द्वितीयं परिकीर्तितम् ।। ३३.
The first region is called Jalada, after Jalada; the second is renowned as Kaumāra, after Kumāra.
सुकुमारं तृतीयन्तु सुकुमारस्य कीर्तितम्। मणीचकस्य चतुर्थं मणीचकमिहोच्यते ।। ३३.
The third is known as Sukumāra, after Sukumāra; the fourth, Maṇīcaka, is named after Maṇīcaka.
वसुमोदस्य वै वर्षं पञ्चमं वसुमोदकम्। मोदाकस्य तु मोदाकं वर्षं षष्ठं प्रकीर्तितम् ।। ३३.
The fifth region, Vasumodaka, is named after Vasumoda; the sixth, Modāka, is named after Modāka.
महाद्रुमस्य नाम्ना तु सप्तमन्तु महाद्रुमम्। एषान्तु मानभिस्तानि सप्तवर्षाणि तत्र वै ।। ३३.
The seventh, Mahādruma, is named after Mahādruma; thus, these seven regions there are named after them.
