तथासमुत्थितेनैव विक्रान्तेन महात्मना। उत्पादिता नरमुखाः किन्नराः शांशपायनाः ॥ ८.
Likewise, by that same mighty and great-souled one, the human-faced Kinnaras, the Śāṃśapāyanas, were produced.
हरिषेणः सुषेणश्च वारिषेणश्च वीर्यवान्। रुद्रदत्तेन्द्रदत्तौ च चन्द्रद्रुम महाद्रुमौ ॥ ८.
Hariṣeṇa, Suṣeṇa, and Vāriṣeṇa, powerful; Rudradatta and Indradatta, Candradruma and Mahādruma—these are named.
बिन्दुश्च बिन्दुसारश्च चन्द्रवंशाश्च किन्नराः। इत्येते किन्नराः श्रेष्ठा लोके ख्याताः सुशोभनाः ॥ ८.
Bindu, Bindusāra, the Moon-born, and the Kinnaras—these are the foremost Kinnaras, renowned in the world and exceedingly beautiful.
नृत्यगीतप्रगल्भानामेतेषां द्विजसत्तमाः। लोके गणशतान्येव किन्नराणां महात्मनाम् ॥ ८.
O best of twice-born, among these, there are hundreds of groups of the great-souled Kinnaras, skilled in dance and song, in the world.
यक्षा यक्षोपशान्तश्च लौहेया रूपशालिनी। दुहीता सुरविन्देति प्रकाशा सिद्धसम्मता ॥ ८.
Yakṣa, Yakṣopaśānta, and the beautiful Lauheyā, and Suravindā, the illustrious daughter, are all esteemed by the Siddhas.
उपायाकेतनस्याहि स्वयमुत्पादितो गणः । करालकेन भूतानां तेषां नामानि मे श्रृणु ॥ ८.
From Upāyāketa himself, a host was produced; now hear from me the names of those beings, given by Karālaka.
भूता भूतगणैर्ज्ञेया आवेशकनिवेशकाः। इत्येवमादिर्हि गणो भूमिगोचरकः स्मृतः ॥ ८.
The beings known as Bhūtas, together with their groups, are called Āveśakas and Niveśakas; thus, this is the beginning of the host known to move upon the earth.
विज्ञेय इह लोकेऽस्मिन् भूतानां भूतनायकः। ये उत्कृष्टा भवन्त्येषामम्बरान्तरचारिणाम्। वृक्षाग्रमात्रमाकाशं ते चरन्ति न संशयः ॥ ८.
Here in this world, the leader of the Bhūtas should be understood; among those who move through the sky, those who are most excellent roam the space equal to the height of a tree—there is no doubt.
तत्रेमे देवगन्धर्वाः प्रायेण कथिता मया। देवोपस्थाननिरता विज्ञेयास्ते यशस्विनः ॥ ८.
Thus, I have mostly described here the Devas and Gandharvas; know them as illustrious, devoted to attending upon the gods.
नारायणं सुरगुरुं विरजं पुष्करेक्षणम्। हिरण्यगर्भञ्च तथा चतुर्वक्त्रं स्वयम्भुवम् ॥ ८.
Nārāyaṇa, the preceptor of the gods, Viraja, the lotus-eyed one, Hiraṇyagarbha, and likewise the four-faced self-born one—
शङ्करञ्च महादेवमीशानञ्च जगत्प्रभुम्। इन्द्रपूर्वांस्तथा दित्यान् रुद्रांश्च वसुभिः सह ॥ ८.
Śaṅkara, Mahādeva, Īśāna, the lord of the world, and the Ādityas headed by Indra, as well as the Rudras together with the Vasus—
उपतस्थुः सगन्धर्वा नृत्त्यगीतविशारदाः। त्रिदशाः सर्वलोकस्था निपुणा गीतवादिनः ॥ ८.
Attended by Gandharvas skilled in dance and song, all the gods dwelling in every world, adept in singing and playing instruments, paid homage.
हंसो ज्येष्ठः कनिष्ठोऽन्यो मध्यमौ च हहा हुहूः। चतुर्थो धिषणश्चैव ततो वासिरुचिस्तथा ॥ ८.
Haṃsa is the eldest, another is the youngest, the two in the middle are Hahā and Huhū; the fourth is Dhiṣaṇa, and then Vāsiruci.
षष्ठस्तु तुम्बुरुस्तेषां ततो विश्वावसुः स्मृतः। इमाश्चाप्सरसो दिव्या विहिताः पुण्यलक्षणाः ॥ ८.
The sixth among them is Tumburu, and then Viśvāvasu is remembered; and these are the divine Apsarases, endowed with auspicious qualities.
सुषुवेऽष्टौ महाभागा वरिष्ठा देवपूजिताः। अनवद्यामनवशामन्वतां मदनप्रियाम्। अरूषां सुभगां भासी मरिष्टाऽष्टौ व्यजायत ॥ ८.
Eight great and most excellent, worshipped by the gods, were born: Anavadya, Anavaśā, Anvatī, Madanapriyā, Arūṣā, Subhagā, Bhāsī, and Mariṣṭā—these eight appeared.
मनोवती सुकेशा च तुम्बुरोस्तु सुते उभे। पञ्चचूडास्त्विमा दिव्या दैविक्योऽप्सरसो दश ॥ ८.
Manovatī and Sukeśā, both daughters of Tumburu, and these five-crowned divine Apsarases, ten in number, are of divine origin.
मेनका सहजन्या च पर्णिनी पुञ्जिकस्थला। घृतस्थला घृताची च विश्वाची पूर्वचीत्यपि। प्रम्लोचेत्यभिविख्यातानुम्लोचन्ती तथैव च ॥ ८.
Menakā, Sahajanyā, Parṇinī, Puñjikasthalā, Ghṛtasthalā, Ghṛtācī, Viśvācī, Pūrvacī, Pramlocā, and Anumlocantī—these are renowned.
अनादिनिधनस्याथ जज्ञे नारायणस्य या। ऊरोः सर्वानवद्याङ्गी उर्वश्येकादशी स्मृता ॥ ८.
And Urvaśī, the eleventh, was born from the thigh of the beginningless and endless Nārāyaṇa, possessing flawless limbs.
मेनस्य मेनका कन्या ब्रह्मणो हृष्टचेतसः । सर्वाश्च ब्रह्म वादिन्यो महायोगाश्च ताः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
Menakā is the daughter of Menā, who delighted the mind of Brahmā; all these are known as speakers of Brahman and as great yoginīs.
गणा अप्सरसाङ्ख्याताः पुण्यास्ते वै चतुर्द्दश। आहूताः शोभयन्तश्च गणा ह्येते चतुर्द्दश ॥ ८.
The groups of Apsarases, numbering fourteen, are virtuous; these fourteen hosts, when summoned, bring splendor.
ब्रह्मणो मानसाः कन्याः शोभयन्त्यो मनोः सुताः। वेगवन्त्यस्त्वरिष्टाया ऊर्ज्जायाश्चाग्निसम्भवाः ॥ ८.
The mind-born daughters of Brahmā, radiant, became the daughters of Manu; the swift ones of Tvaritā, the energetic ones of Ūrjjā, and those born from Agni.
आयुष्मन्त्यश्च सूर्यस्य रश्मिजाताः सुभा स्वराः। वारिजा ह्यमृतोत्पन्ना अमृता नामतः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
The long-lived ones are daughters of Sūrya, born from his rays, shining and melodious; the water-born, arisen from nectar, are called Amṛtā by name.
वायूत्पन्ना मुदा नाम भूमिजाता भवास्तु वै । विद्युतश्च रुचो नाम मृत्योः कन्याश्च भैरवाः ॥ ८.
Those born from Vāyu are called Mudā; those born from the earth are Bhavā; from lightning, the daughters named Rucā; and the daughters of Mṛtyu are the Bhairavās.
शोभयन्त्यः कामगुणा गणाः प्रोक्ताश्चतुर्द्दश। सेन्द्रोपेन्द्रैः सुरगणैः रूपातिशयनिर्मिताः ॥ ८.
The radiant ones, endowed with the qualities of desire, are said to be fourteen groups, created with forms surpassing beauty, together with Indra, Upendra, and the hosts of gods.
शुभरूपा महाभागा दिव्या नारी तिलोत्तमा। ब्रह्मणश्चाग्निकुण्डाच्च देवनारी प्रभावती। रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना उत्पन्ना लोकविश्रुता ॥ ८.
Tilottamā, of auspicious form, great fortune, and divine nature, is a celestial woman; Prabhāvatī, born from Brahmā’s fire-altar, is a goddess famed in the worlds, endowed with beauty and youth.
वे दीतलसमुत्पन्ना चतुर्वक्त्रस्य धीमतः। नाम्ना वेदवती नाम सुरनारी महाप्रभा ॥ ८.
Born from the Vedic altar of the wise four-faced one, the celestial woman of great radiance is known by the name Vedavatī.
तथा यमस्य दुहिता रूपयौवनशालिनी। वरहेमविभा हेमा देवनारी सुलोचना ॥ ८.
Likewise, Hemā, the daughter of Yama, endowed with beauty and youth, adorned with excellent gold, is a celestial woman with lovely eyes.
इत्येते बहुसाहस्रं भास्वरा ह्यप्सरोगणाः। देवतानामृषीणाञ्च पत्न्यस्ता मातरश्च ह ॥ ८.
Thus, these shining hosts of Apsarases, numbering in the thousands, are wives and mothers of the gods and sages.
सुगन्धाश्चम्पवर्णाश्च सर्वाश्चाप्सरसः समाः। सम्प्रयोगे तु कान्तेन माद्यन्ति मदिरां विना। तासामाप्यायते स्पर्शादानन्दश्च विवर्द्धते ॥ ८.
All the Apsarases are fragrant and beautiful in appearance, equal among themselves; when united with a beloved, they become intoxicated without wine, and by their touch, joy increases and delight grows.
पर्वते नारदे पूर्वं रेतः स्कन्नं प्रजापतेः। पर्वतस्तत्र संभूतो नारदश्चैव तावुभौ॥ तयोर्यवीयसी चैव तृतीयारन्धती स्मृता। देवरुख्यो सूर्यजन्म तस्मिन्नारदपर्वतौ॥(पाठभेदः) विनतायास्तु पुत्रौ द्वावरुणो गरुडश्च ह। षट्त्रिंशत्तु स्वसारश्च यवीयस्यस्तु ताः स्मृताः ॥ ८.
On the mountain, formerly, the seed of Prajāpati was shed; from that, Parvata and Nārada were born, and their younger sister is remembered as Arundhatī. The daughters of Yavīyasī, thirty-six in number, are known as the sisters; Vinatā bore two sons, Aruṇa and Garuḍa, and those sisters are remembered as the younger ones.
