येऽङ्गुष्ठमात्राः पुरुषा देहस्थाः सर्वदेहिनाम्। रक्षन्तु ते हि मां नित्यं नित्यमाप्याययन्तु माम् ।। ३०.
May those persons, the size of a thumb, who dwell in the bodies of all embodied beings, always protect me and ever nourish me.
ये चाप्युत्पतिता गर्भादधोभागगताश्च ये। तेषां स्वाहाः स्वधाश्चैव आप्नुवन्तु स्वदन्तु च ।। ३०.
And those who have arisen from the womb, and those who have gone below—may they obtain svāhā and svadhā, and may they be satisfied.
ये न रोदन्ति देहस्थाः प्राणिनो रोदयन्ति च। हर्षयन्ति च हृष्यन्ति नमस्तेभ्योऽस्तु नित्यशः ।। ३०.
Those beings who do not weep within the body, but cause others to weep, who bring joy and themselves rejoice—salutations to them always.
ये समुद्रे नदीदुर्गे पर्वतेषु गुहासु च। वृक्षमूलेषु गोष्ठेषु कान्तारगहनेषु न ।। ३०.
Those who are in the ocean, in river-forts, on mountains, in caves, at the roots of trees, in cow-pens, and in the depths of the wilderness—
चतुष्पथेषु रथ्यासु चत्वरेषु सभासु च। चन्द्रार्कयोर्मध्यगता ये च चन्द्रार्करश्मिषु ।। ३०.
At crossroads, in streets, in squares, in assemblies, those who are between the moon and the sun, and those in the rays of the moon and sun—
रसातलगता ये च ये च तस्मात्परङ्गताः। नमस्तेभ्यो नमस्तेभ्यो नमस्तेभ्यश्च नित्यशः। सूक्ष्माः स्थूलाः कृशा ह्रस्वा नमस्तेभ्यस्तु नित्यशः ।। ३०.
Those who dwell in the netherworlds and those who are beyond them—salutations to them, salutations to them, salutations to them always; whether subtle, gross, thin, or short—salutations to them always.
सर्वस्त्वं सर्वगो देव सर्वभूतपतिर्भवान्। सर्वभूतान्तरात्मा च तेन त्वं न निमन्त्रितः ।। ३०.
You are all, you pervade all, O god; you are the lord of all beings; you are the inner soul of all beings; therefore, you are not to be invited.
त्वमेव चेज्यसे यस्माद्यज्ञैर्विविधदक्षिणैः। त्वमेव कर्त्ता सर्वस्य तेन त्वं न निमन्त्रितः ।। ३०.
You alone are worshipped by sacrifices with various offerings; you alone are the doer of all; therefore, you are not to be invited.
अथ वा मायया देव मोहितः सूक्ष्मया त्वया। एतस्मात् कारणाद्वापि तेन त्वं न निमन्त्रितः ।। ३०.
Or, O god, perhaps by your subtle māyā I am deluded; or for this reason—therefore, you are not to be invited.
प्रसीद मम देवेश त्वमेव शरणं मम। त्वं गतिस्त्वं प्रतिष्ठा च न चान्यास्ति न मे गतिः ।। ३०.
Be gracious to me, O lord of the gods; you alone are my refuge; you are my goal, you are my foundation; there is no other, nor do I have any other way.
स्तुत्वैवं स महादेवं विरराम प्रजापातिः। भगवानपि सुप्रीतः पुनर्दक्षमभाषत ।। ३०.
Having thus praised the great god, the lord of creatures ceased; and the blessed one, being well pleased, again spoke to Dakṣa.
परितुष्टोऽस्मि ते दक्ष स्तवेनानेन सुव्रत। बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन मत्समीपं गमिष्यसि ।। ३०.
I am well pleased with you, O Dakṣa, because of this praise, O virtuous one; what more need be said? You shall come to my presence.
अथैनमब्रवीद्वाक्यं त्रैलोक्याधिपतिर्भवः। कृत्वाश्वासकरं वाक्यं वाक्यज्ञो वाक्यमाहतम् ।। ३०.
Then the lord of the three worlds, Bhava, spoke these words to him, offering words of reassurance, as one skilled in speech uttering a great statement.
दक्ष दक्ष न कर्त्तव्यो मन्युर्विघ्नमिमं प्रति। अहं यज्ञहा न त्वन्यो दृश्यते तत्पुरा त्वया ।। ३०.
Daksha, Daksha, do not let anger arise against this obstacle; I am the destroyer of the sacrifice, not another, as you saw before.
भूयश्च तं वरमिमं मत्तो गृह्णीष्व सुव्रत। प्रसन्नवदनो भूत्वा त्वमेकाग्रमनाः श्रृणु ।। ३०.
Again, O steadfast one, accept this boon from me; with a gracious face, listen attentively with a focused mind.
अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य वाजपेयशतस्य च। प्रजापते मत्प्रसादात् फलभागी भविष्यसि ।। ३०.
By my favor, you shall receive the fruit of a thousand horse sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya rites, O lord of creatures.
वेदान् षडङ्गानुद्धृत्य साङ्ख्यान्योगांश्च कृत्स्नशः। तपश्च विपुलं तप्त्वा दुश्चरं देवदानवैः ।। ३०.
Having mastered the Vedas with their six limbs, and all the Sāṅkhya and Yoga teachings, and having performed great austerities difficult for gods and demons alike,
अर्थैर्द्दशार्द्धसंयुक्तैर्गूढमप्राज्ञनिर्म्मितम्। वर्णाश्रमकृतैर्धर्मैंर्विपरीतं क्वचित्समम् ।। ३०.
With meanings joined by tens and halves, concealed and composed by the unwise, with duties established by the classes and stages of life, sometimes contrary, sometimes equal,
श्रुत्यर्थैरध्यवसितं पशुपाशविमोक्षणम्। सर्वेषामाश्रमाणान्तु मया पाशुपतं व्रतम्। उत्पादितं शुभं दक्ष सर्वपापविमोक्षणम् ।। ३०.
Established by the meanings of the scriptures, the liberation from the bonds of creatures; for all the stages of life, I have instituted the Pāśupata vow, O Daksha, auspicious and freeing from all sins.
अस्य चीर्णस्य यत्सम्यक् फलं भवति पुष्कलम्। तदस्तु ते महाभाग मानसस्त्यज्यतां ज्वरः ।। ३०.
And whatever abundant fruit arises from its proper observance, let that be yours, O fortunate one; let your mind abandon its fever.
एवमुक्त्वा महादेवः सपत्नीकः सहानुगः। अदर्शनमनुप्राप्तो दक्षस्यामितविक्रमः ।। ३०.
Having spoken thus, the great god, together with his consort and followers, vanished from Daksha's sight, he of immeasurable prowess.
अवाप्य च तदा भागं यथोक्तं ब्रह्मणा भवः। ज्वरञ्च सर्वधर्मज्ञो बहुधा व्यभजत्तदा। शान्त्यर्थं सर्वभूतानां श्रृणुध्वं तत्र वै द्विजाः ।। ३०.
Then Bhava, having received the portion as declared by Brahmā, divided the fever in many ways, O knower of all duties, for the peace of all beings; listen to this, O twice-born.
शीर्षाभितापो नागानां पर्वतानां शिलारुजः। अपान्तु नालिकां विद्यान्निर्मोकम्भुजगेष्वपि ।। ३०.
Head pain among serpents, stone pain among mountains, and in waters, know the nālikā among snakes as well.
शौरकः सौरभेयाणामूषरः पृथिवीतले । इभा नामपि धर्मज्ञ दृष्टिप्रत्यवरोधनम् ।। ३०.
Śauraka among Saurabheyas, ūṣara on the earth's surface; among elephants, O knower of dharma, obstruction of vision.
रन्ध्रोद्भूतं तथाश्वानां शिखोद्भेदश्च बर्हिणाम्। नेत्ररोगः कोकिलानां ज्वरः प्रोक्तो महात्मभिः ।। ३०.
Cavities arising among horses, crest splitting among peacocks, eye disease among cuckoos is declared as fever by the great souls.
अजानां पित्तभेदश्च सर्वेषामिति नः श्रुतम्। शुकानामपि सर्वेषां हिमिका प्रोच्यते ज्वरः। शार्दूलेष्वपि वै विप्राः श्रमो ज्वर इहोच्यते ।। ३०.
Among goats, splitting of bile is heard by us as fever; among all parrots, chill is called fever; among tigers, O sages, fatigue is spoken of as fever here.
मानुषेषु तु सर्वज्ञ ज्वरो नामैष कीर्तितः। मरणे जन्मनि तथा मध्ये च विशते सदा ।। ३०.
Among humans, O omniscient one, this fever is named thus; it enters at death, at birth, and always in the middle.
एतन्माहेश्वरं तेजौ ज्वरो नाम सुदारुणः। नमस्यश्चैव मान्यश्च सर्वप्राणिभिरीश्वरः ।। ३०.
This fierce fever, named Māheśvara, is to be honored and revered by all living beings, for it is the lord.
इमां ज्वरोत्पत्तिमदीनमानसः पठेत्सदा यः सुसमाहितो नरः । विमुक्तरोगः स नरो मुदा युतो लभेत कामान् स यथामनीषितान् ।। ३०.
Whoever, with a humble mind and concentration, always recites this origin of fever, that man, freed from disease and filled with joy, attains his desired wishes.
दक्षप्रोक्तं स्तवञ्चापि कीर्त्तयेद्यः श्रृणोति वा। नाशुभं प्राप्नुयात् किञ्चिद्दीर्घञ्चायुरवाप्नुयात् ।। ३०.
Whoever praises or hears the hymn spoken by Daksha, does not encounter anything inauspicious and attains a long life.
