भगवन् सर्वदेवेषु प्रभावानधिको गुणैः । अजेयश्चाप्यधृष्यश्च तेजसा यशसा श्रिया ।। ३०.
O Lord, among all the gods, you surpass them in power and virtues; you are unconquerable, unassailable, by your energy, fame, and splendor.
अनेन तु महाभाग प्रतिषेधेन नामतः । अतीव दुःखमापन्ना वेपथुश्च ममानघ ।। ३०.
But, O greatly fortunate one, because of this prohibition by name, I am extremely distressed and trembling, O sinless one.
किं नाम दानं नियमन्तपो वा कुर्य्यामहं येन पतिर्ममाद्य। लभेत भागं भगवानचिन्त्यो यज्ञस्य चार्द्धं त्वथ वा तृतीयम् ।। ३०.
What gift, observance, or austerity should I perform today, so that my Lord, the inconceivable one, may obtain a share of the sacrifice—half, or at least a third?
एवं ब्रुवाणां भगवानचिन्त्यः पत्नीं प्रहृष्टः क्षुभितामुवाच। न वेत्सि देवेशि कृशोदराङ्गि किं नाम युक्तं वचनन्तवेदम् ।। ३०.
As she spoke thus, the inconceivable Lord, delighted, addressed his agitated wife: 'O queen of the gods, slender-waisted one, do you not know what is proper to say in this matter?'
अहं हि जानामि विशालनेत्रे ध्यानेन सर्वं हि वदन्ति सन्तः। न वाद्य मोहेन महेन्द्रदेवो लोकत्रयं सर्वथा संप्रमूढम् ।। ३०.
O wide-eyed one, I know everything through meditation, as the wise say; today, through delusion, even Mahendra has thoroughly confused the three worlds.
मामध्वरे शंसितारः स्तुवन्ति रथन्तरे साम गायन्ति गेयम्। मां ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मसत्रे यजन्ते माध्वर्य्यवः कल्पयन्ते च भागम् ।। ३०.
In the sacrifice, the chanters praise me, singing the Sāma hymns in the Rathantara; the Brāhmaṇas worship me in the Brahmasatra, and the officiating priests assign me a share.
अप्राकृतोऽपि भगवान् सर्वस्त्रीजनसंसदि। स्तौति गोपा यते वापि स्वमात्मानं न संशयः ।। ३०.
Even though the Lord is beyond nature, in the assembly of all women, cowherds or ascetics, he certainly praises his own self—there is no doubt.
नात्मानं स्तौमि देवेशि पश्य त्वमुपगच्छ च। यं स्रक्ष्यामि वरारोहे भागार्थं वरवर्णिनि ।। ३०.
O queen of the gods, I do not praise myself; see for yourself and approach. I shall create one, O beautiful one, for the sake of obtaining a share.
एवमुक्त्वा तु भगवान् पत्नीं प्राणैरपि प्रियाम्। सोऽसृजद्भगवान्वक्राद्भूतं क्रोधाग्निसन्निभम् ।। ३०.
Having spoken thus to his beloved wife, dearer than life, the Lord then created, from his bent brow, a being blazing like the fire of wrath.
सहस्रशीर्षं देवञ्च सहस्रचरणे क्षणम्। सहस्रमुद्गरधरं सहस्रशरपाणिनम् ।। ३०.
He created a god with a thousand heads and a thousand feet for a moment, holding a thousand clubs and a thousand arrows in his hands.
शङ्खचक्रगदापाणिं दीप्तकार्मुकधारिणम्। परश्वसिधरं देवं महारौद्रं भयावहम् ।। ३०.
He bore a conch, discus, and mace in his hands, wielding a blazing bow, and an axe and sword; the god appeared, immensely fierce and terrifying.
घोर रूपेण दीप्यन्तं चन्द्रार्धकृतभूषणम्। वसानं चर्म वैयाघ्रं महारुधिरनिःस्रवम् ।। ३०.
Shining with a dreadful form, adorned with the crescent moon, wearing a tiger skin, and streaming with copious blood.
दंष्ट्राकरालं विभ्रान्तं महावक्त्रं महोदरम्। विद्युज्जिह्वं प्रलम्बोष्ठं लम्बकर्णं दुरासदम् ।। ३०.
With protruding fangs and a terrible mouth, vast jaws and a great belly, a tongue like lightning, drooping lips, long ears, and impossible to approach.
कुलिशोद्योतितकरम्भाभिर्ज्वलितमूर्द्धजम्। ज्वालामालापरिक्षिप्तं मुक्तादामविभूषितम् ।। ३०.
His hair blazed like it was struck by a thunderbolt, encircled by a garland of flames, adorned with strings of pearls.
तेजसा चैव दीप्यन्तं युगान्तमिव पावकम्। आकर्णदारितास्यान्तञ्चतुर्दिक्षु भयानकम् ।। ३०.
Radiant with his own brilliance, like the fire at the end of an age, his mouth gaping to his ears, terrifying in all directions.
महाबलं महातेजं महापुरुषमीश्वरम्। विश्वहर्तृमहा कायं महान्यग्रोधमण्डलम्। युगपच्चन्द्रशतवद्दीप्यन्तं मन्मथाग्निवत् ।। ३०.
Of immense strength, immense radiance, the great Person, the Lord; the destroyer of the universe, with a vast body, like a great banyan tree; shining all at once like a hundred moons, blazing like the fire of desire.
चतुर्महास्यं सिततीक्ष्णदंष्ट्रं महोग्रतेजोबलकौतुकाढयम्। युगान्तसूर्य्याग्निसहस्रभासं सहस्रचन्द्रामलकान्तिकान्तम्। प्रदीप्तसर्वौषधिमन्दराभं सुमेरुकैलासहिमाद्रितुल्यम् ।। ३०.
With four great faces, sharp white fangs, possessed of tremendous energy, power, and wonder; shining like a thousand suns and fires at the end of an age, resplendent as a thousand full moons; radiant like all medicinal herbs and Mandara trees, comparable to Mount Meru, Kailāsa, and the Himalayas.
युगार्काभं महावीर्य्यं चारुनासं महाननम्। प्रचण्डगण्डं दीप्ताक्षमग्निज्वालाविलाननम् ।। ३०.
Resembling the sun at the end of an age, of great might, with a beautiful nose and a vast face; fierce cheeks, blazing eyes, and a mouth filled with fire-flames.
मृगेन्द्रकृत्तिवसनं महाभुजगवेष्टितम्। उष्णीषिणं चन्द्रधरं व्कचिदुग्रं व्कचित्समम् ।। ३०.
Clad in a lion's hide, encircled by great serpents, crowned, bearing the moon, at times fierce, at times calm.
नानाकुसुममूर्द्धानं नानागन्दानुलेपनम् । नानारत्नविचित्राङ्गं नानाभरणभूषितम् ।। ३०.
With hair adorned with various flowers, anointed with diverse fragrances; his limbs decorated with many jewels, adorned with various ornaments.
कर्णिकारस्रजं दीप्तं क्रोधादुद्भ्रान्तलोचनम्। व्कचिन्नृत्यति चित्राङ्गं व्कचिद्वदति सुस्वरम् ।। ३०.
Wearing a radiant garland of karṇikāra flowers, his eyes wild with wrath; at times he dances with his adorned body, at times he speaks with a pleasant voice.
व्कचिद्ध्यायति युक्तात्मा व्कचित्स्तूलं प्रमार्जति। व्कचिद्गायति विश्वात्मा व्कचिद्रौति मुहुर्मुहुः ।। ३०.
At times he meditates, his mind disciplined; at times he sweeps the altar; at times he sings, the soul of the universe; at times he roars again and again.
ज्ञानं वैराग्यमैश्वर्य्यं तपः सत्यं क्षमा धृतिः। प्रभुत्वमात्मसंबोधो ह्यधिष्ठानगुणैर्युतः ।। ३०.
He is endowed with knowledge, detachment, lordliness, austerity, truth, forbearance, steadfastness, sovereignty, self-awareness, and the qualities of mastery.
जानुभ्यामवनिं गत्वा प्रणतः प्राञ्जलिः स्थितः। आज्ञापय त्वं देवेश किं कार्य्यं करवाणि ते ।। ३०.
Having gone to the ground on his knees, bowing with joined palms, he said: 'Command me, Lord of gods, what task shall I perform for you?'
तमुवाचाक्षिप मखं दक्षस्येह महेश्वरः। देवस्यानुमतिं श्रुत्वा वीरभद्रो महाबलः। प्रणम्य शिरसा पादौ देवेशस्य उमापतेः ।। ३०.
To him, the great Lord Maheśvara said, 'Destroy Dakṣa's sacrifice here.' Hearing the goddess's consent, mighty Vīrabhadra bowed his head to the feet of the Lord of gods, the husband of Umā.
ततो बन्धात् प्रमुक्तेन सिंहेनेवेह लीलया। देव्या मन्युकृतं मत्वा हतो दक्षस्य स क्रतुः ।। ३०.
Then, released from bonds, like a lion at play, considering the goddess's wrath, he destroyed Dakṣa's sacrifice.
मन्युना च महाभीमा भद्रकाली महेश्वरी। आत्मनः सर्वसाक्षित्वे तेन सार्द्ध सहानुगा ।। ३०.
And with great fury, Bhadrakālī, the great goddess, as the witness of all, together with her attendants, accompanied him.
स एष भगवान् क्रुद्धः प्रेतावासकृतालयः। वीरभद्र इति ख्यातो देव्या मन्युप्रमार्जकः ।। ३०.
Thus, this blessed one, enraged, dwells in the abode of spirits; known as Vīrabhadra, he is the remover of the goddess's wrath.
सोऽसृजद्रोमकूपेभ्यो रौद्रान्नाम गणेश्वरान्। रुद्रानुगा महावीर्य्या रुद्रवीर्यपराक्रमाः ।। ३०.
From the pores of his skin, he created fierce leaders of hosts, followers of Rudra, of great might, possessing the valor and power of Rudra.
रुद्रस्यानुचराः सर्वे सर्वे रुद्रसमप्रभाः। ते निपेतुस्ततस्तूर्णं शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।। ३०.
All of them were attendants of Rudra, all shining with the same brilliance as Rudra; then, they descended swiftly, by the hundreds and thousands.
