Thereupon, the goddess, angered and indignant, spoke to her father: 'O lord, you have performed this worship for the younger, disregarding and insulting the elder, which is censured.'
'I am the eldest and most excellent; you ought not to act unjustly.' Thus addressed, Dakṣa, his eyes reddened with anger, replied to her.
'You are indeed the best, the most excellent, always worthy of honor, my child; and the husbands of these (your sisters) are always highly esteemed by me.'
'Brahmā, the eight, the most austere, the great yogis, the supremely righteous—endowed with virtues, all praiseworthy—are the sons-in-law of mine through Satī from Tryambaka.'
Vasiṣṭha, Atri, Pulastya, Aṅgirā, Pulaha, Kratu, Bhṛgu, and Marīci—these, the best, are my sons-in-law.
'That Śarva is your very self, and you are ever devoted to him; therefore, I do not wish for you, for Bhava is adverse to me.'
Thus Dakṣa spoke then, his mind greatly deluded, for the purpose of bringing about his own curse, and those great sages previously mentioned.
Thus addressed, the goddess, angry, spoke to her father: 'Because you reproach me, who am blameless in word, thought, and deed, therefore I abandon this body and henceforth become your daughter no more.'
Then, being insulted and filled with sorrow and anger, she spoke these words, having bowed to the great Lord.
Wherever I am born again in a radiant body, there too, being born with clear mind and righteousness, I shall again become the lawful wife of Tryambaka.
There, seated in that very place, she composed her mind, and with her mind she undertook the fiery concentration.
Then, stirred by the wind arising from that fiery concentration, fire issued from all her limbs and reduced her to ashes.
Hearing of Sati's death and understanding the conversation between the two just as it happened, the god Shankara, the wielder of the trident, became angry with Daksha and the sages.
Because Daksha insulted Sati for my sake, all his other daughters, together with their husbands, are praised.
Therefore, after reaching the era of Vaivasvata, the great sages will be born again in my sacrifice, not from a womb.
When the offering was made by Brahma and the period of Cākṣuṣa Manu ended, having summoned the sages, Daksha was born again.
And in the era of Cākṣuṣa, there will be a king, the grandson of Prācīnabarhis and the son of Pracetas.
You will give birth to him with the name Daksha in Mārṣā, and also to daughters among the Śākhinas, when the Cākṣuṣa period arrives.
Even there, O misguided one, I will cause you obstacles again and again in actions connected with righteousness, wealth, and desire.
Because you spoke harshly to the sages for my sake, therefore, along with the gods, the twice-born will not worship you in sacrifice.
After offering a cruel oblation, they will reject you in rituals; you will remain here, having abandoned heaven, until the end of the age.
Among all the worlds, the earth is considered the foremost; I will uphold it by the command of the supreme Lord.
All the worlds, along with the shining ones, are established on this earth; I uphold them here always, not by your command.
The fourfold order of gods partakes together; I will not partake with them, so they will give separately; thus, with those gods, you will not be worshipped together, but separately.
Then Daksha, addressed by Rudra of boundless energy, abandoned the interval of Svāyambhuva and was born here among men.
Knowing Daksha as the lord of the house, the master of knowledge, he, named Daksha, performed great sacrifices together with the gods.
Then, in the era of Vaivasvata Manu, the goddess who was Sati before was born as the daughter of the mountain-king Mainaka.
That goddess, formerly Sati, later became Umā; she is ever devoted to Bhava through vows, and Bhava is never separated from her, for as long as the Lord wishes to remain in each Manvantara.
Just as Devī was devoted to Marīci and Kaśyapa, Śrī to Nārāyaṇa the Sādhya, and Śacī to Maghavan, so too.
Kīrti to Viṣṇu, Ruci to Sūrya, and Arundhatī to Vasiṣṭha—these goddesses never abandon their husbands under any circumstance; in each recurring cycle of creation, they are born again together with them.
