From Ṛta was born a son equal to a sacred resolve, and a blessed lineage arose; none of them had wives or sons, for all were of upward-flowing seed. These are known as the sixty thousand Vālakhilyas.
They go before Aruṇa, surrounding the Sun; since the great dissolution, all are companions of the Sun’s rays.
His two younger sisters, Punyātmā and Sumati, are known as the daughters-in-law of Parvasa, the son of Pūrṇamāsa.
From Ūrjā were born seven sons to Vasiṣṭha; their elder sister is Puṇḍarīkā, graceful in form.
She became the mother of Dyutimat and the beloved chief queen of Pāṇḍu; in her, the renowned seven younger Vasiṣṭhas were born.
Rajas, Arddhabāhu, Savana, Ādhana, Sutapā, and Śukla—these are all remembered as the seven sages.
From Rajas was born the illustrious daughter Mārkaṇḍeyī, who, in the western direction, gave birth to Ketumat, the lord of creatures, among the royal class.
Hear now the lineages and names of those great Vasiṣṭhas; in the age of Svāyambhuva, these have passed—now listen to the descendants of Agni.
Thus the creation of the sages, along with their connections, has been described; now, in detail and in order, hear of the descendants of Agni.
That Agni, the presiding deity, existed in the Svāyambhuva epoch; he was the mind-born son of Brahmā, and from him was born Svāhā.
Pāvaka, Pavamāna, and Pāvamāna are remembered as his sons; Śuci and Śauri are also to be known—these three are the sons of Svāhā.
Pavamāna, having been churned, is remembered as Śuci and Śauri; the Pāvakās and the Vaidhyutas—these are their respective abodes.
The son of Pavamāna is called Kavyavāhana; from Pāvaka, Saharakṣa was born, and Havyavāha is the son of Śuci.
Among the gods, Havyavāha is Agni; among the ancestors, Kavyavāhana; Saharakṣa is for the Asuras—thus, there are three fires for the three groups.
Their sons and grandsons are forty-nine in number; I will now speak their names and their separate divisions.
The Vaidhyuta, the worldly fire, is the first son of Brahmā; his son is the Brahmaudanāgni, and his renowned son is called Bharata.
Atharvan is to be known as Bhṛgu, and Aṅgiras is the son of Atharvan; from him is the worldly fire, and Dadhyañc is the son of Atharvan.
Now, the Pavamāna fire, known as Nirmathā by the sages, is to be understood as the Gārhapatya fire; from him, two sons are remembered.
The fire called Ahavaniya, known as the carrier of offerings, is to be praised; the second, called Suta, is the bright fire that is led forth.
In the same way, the Sabhya and Avasathya are both considered sons of the fire to be praised; among the sixteen rivers, the fire called Havyavahana is one, and this Ahavaniya fire is regarded by the twice-born as its presiding deity.
Kaveri, Krishna-Veni, Narmada, and also Yamuna; Godavari, Vitasta, Chandrabhaga, and Iravati—
Vipasha, Kausiki, Shatadru, and also Sarayu; Sita, Sarasvati, Hradini, and likewise Pāvani—
In these, dividing himself into sixteen forms, he placed himself separately in each; thus he became present in the sacrificial hearths.
The sacrificial hearths, moving among the gods, were produced in these; because they were born in the hearths, they are therefore called hearths.
Thus these sons of the rivers were indeed born in the hearths; among them, those fires that are to be enjoyed or placed, listen to their enumeration as they are named.
The hearths—Rtu, Pravahana, Agnidhra—are placed in front; the other hearths are arranged according to their proper places, in the order of the Soma sacrifice on the day of pressing.
Hear now the order of the fires that are indescribable and unutterable: the Samrat fire, the blazing one, is the second, placed on the northern altar.
The Samrat fire is said to be eightfold; the twice-born attend to them. Below is the Parshad, another, the second, seen there.
Now I shall speak of the one called Nabhas, which is fourfold in form; the Brahmajyotis, called Vasur, is said to be in the place of Brahman.
The fire that is not mingled with the sun of offerings is known as Shamitri; the universal ocean-fire is also said to be in the place of Brahman.
