इत्येतद्वो मयाख्यातं गुह्यं भीमस्य तद्यशः। शन्नोऽस्तु द्विपदे नित्यं शन्नोऽस्तु च चतुष्पदे ।। २७.
Thus I have declared to you this secret, the renowned mystery of Bhīma; may there be welfare for bipeds always, and welfare for quadrupeds as well.
एतत् प्रोक्तं निदानं वस्तनूनां नामभिः सह। महादेवस्य देवस्य भृगोस्तु श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। २७.
This origin of the forms, along with their names, has been spoken; listen, O people, to that of Mahādeva, the god, and of Bhṛgu.
भृगोः ख्यातिर्विजज्ञेऽथ ईश्वरौ सुखदुःखयोः। शुभाशुभप्रदातारौ सर्वप्राणभृतामिह। देवौ धाताविधातारौ मन्वन्तरविचारिणौ ।। २८.
Khyāti, daughter of Bhṛgu, was born, and then the two lords of happiness and sorrow, bestowers of auspicious and inauspicious results for all living beings here, the gods Dhātā and Vidhātā, who consider the cycles of Manus.
तयोर्ज्येष्ठा तु भगिनी देवी श्रीर्लोकभाविनी। सा तु नारायणं देवं पतिमासाद्य शोभनम्। नारायणात्मजौ साध्वी बलोत्साहौ व्यजायत ।। २८.
Their eldest sister is the goddess Śrī, the creator of worlds; she attained the splendid god Nārāyaṇa as her husband, and from Nārāyaṇa, the virtuous lady gave birth to Balotsāha and Utsāha.
तस्यास्तु मानसाः पुत्रा ये चान्ये दिव्यचारिणः। ये वहन्ति विमानानि देवानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।। २८.
Her mind-born sons and other divine beings, those who carry the flying vehicles of the gods who perform virtuous deeds.
द्वे तु कन्ये स्मृते भार्य्ये विधातुर्धातुरेव च। आयतिर्नियतिश्चैव तयोः पुत्रौ दृढव्रतौ ।। २८.
Two daughters are remembered as wives of Vidhātṛ and Dhātṛ; Āyati and Niyati, steadfast in vows, are their sons.
पाण्डुश्चैव मृकण्डुश्च ब्रह्मकोशौ सनातनौ। मनस्विन्यां मृकण्जोश्च मार्क्कण्डेयो बभूव ह ।। २८.
Pāṇḍu and Mṛkaṇḍu, the eternal repositories of Brahma, were born; from Manasvinī and Mṛkaṇḍu, Mārkaṇḍeya was born.
सुतो वे दशिरास्तस्य मूर्द्धन्यायामजायत। पीवर्य्यां वेदशिरसः पुत्रा वंशकराः स्मृताः। मार्क्कण्डेया इति ख्याता ऋषयो वेदपारगाः ।। २८.
Vedaśiras was born to Mārkaṇḍeya from Mūrdhanyā; from Pīvarī, the sons of Vedaśiras are remembered as progenitors, known as Mārkaṇḍeyas, sages accomplished in the Vedas.
पाण्डोश्च पुण्डरीकायां द्युतिमानात्मजोऽभवत्। उत्पन्नौ द्युतिमन्तश्च सृजवानश्च तावुभौ। तयोः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च भार्गवाणां परस्परम्। स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरेऽतीते मरीचेः श्रृणुत प्रजाः ।। २८.
From Pāṇḍu and Puṇḍarīkā, Dyutimān was born; Dyutimān and Sṛjavān were both produced; their sons and grandsons are the Bhārgavas, mutually related, in the past Svāyambhuva epoch, listen, O people, to the lineage of Marīci.
पत्नी मरीचेः सम्भूतिर्विजज्ञे सात्मसम्भवम्। प्रजायते पूर्णमासं कन्याश्वेमा विबोधत। कुष्टिः पृष्टिस्त्विषा चैव तथा चापचितिः शुभा ।। २८.
The wife of Marīci, Sambhūti, was born from self-origin; from her, the full moon was born, and these daughters, learn of them: Kuṣṭi, Pṛṣṭi, Tviṣā, and likewise Apaciti, the auspicious.
पूर्णमासः सरस्वत्यां द्वौ पुत्रावुदपादयत्। विरजञ्चैव धर्मिष्ठं पर्व्वसञ्चैव तावुभौ ।। २८.
Pūrṇamāsa, in Sarasvatī, produced two sons: Viraja and Dharmiṣṭha, and also Parvasa, those two.
विरजस्यात्मजो विद्वान् सुधामा नाम विश्रुतः। सुधामसुतवैराजः प्राच्यान्दिशि सममाश्रितः ।। २८.
The wise son of Viraja was Sudhāmā, renowned by name; Sudhāmā's son, Vairāja, settled in the eastern direction.
लोकपालः सुधर्म्मात्मा गौरीपुत्रः प्रतापवान् । पर्वसः सर्वगणानां प्रविष्टः स महायशाः ।। २८.
The guardian of the worlds, whose nature is righteousness, the illustrious son of Gauri, entered among all the hosts of beings; he is renowned and mighty.
पर्वसः पर्वसायान्तु जनयामास वै सुतौ। यज्ञवामञ्च श्रीमन्तं सुतं काश्यपमेव च। तयोर्गोत्रकरौ पुत्रौ तौ जातौ धर्मनिश्वितौ ।। २८.
Parvasa, together with Parvasā, indeed begot two sons: Yajñavāma, who is glorious, and Kāśyapa; these two sons became founders of their lineages, born in accordance with dharma.
स्मृतिश्चाङ्गिरसः पत्नी जज्ञे तावात्मसम्भवौ। पुत्रौ कन्याश्वतस्रश्च पुण्यास्ता लोकविश्रुताः ।। २८.
Smṛti, the wife of Āṅgiras, gave birth to those two sons, and also to daughters; those virtuous daughters are renowned throughout the worlds.
सिनीवाली कुहूश्चैव राका चानुमतिस्तथा। तथैव भरताग्निञ्च कीर्त्तिमन्तञ्च तावुभौ ।। २८.
Sinīvālī, Kuhū, Rākā, and Anumatī, as well as Bharatagni and Kīrttimanta—these two also.
अग्नेः पुत्रन्तु पर्जन्यं संहूती सुषुवे प्रभुम्। हिरण्यरोमा पर्जन्यो मारीच्यामुदपादयत्। आभूतसंप्लवस्थायी लोकपालः सवै स्मृतः ।। २८.
Parjanya, the lord, was born as the son of Agni; Hiraṇyaromā, Parjanya, was begotten by Mārīci; he is remembered as the guardian of the worlds, abiding at the time of the cosmic flood.
जज्ञे कीर्तिमतश्चापि धेनुका तावकल्मषौ। वरिष्ठं धृतिमन्तञ्चाप्युभावङ्गिरसां वरौ ।। २८.
From Kīrttimanta, Dhenukā was born, both bearing blemishes; Variṣṭha and Dhṛtimanta, both foremost among the Āṅgirasas, were also born.
तयोः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च येऽतीता वै सहस्रशः। अनसूयापि जज्ञे तान् पुलहस्य प्रजापतेः ।। २८.
Their sons and grandsons, who have passed away, numbered in the thousands; Anasūyā also gave birth to them for Pulaha, the progenitor.
कन्याञ्चैव श्रुतिं नाम माता शङ्खपदस्य या। कर्दमस्य तु या पत्नी पुलहस्य प्रजापतेः ।। २८.
And the daughter named Śruti, who was the mother of Śaṅkhapada, and the wife of Kardama, and also of Pulaha, the progenitor.
सत्यनेत्रश्च हव्यश्च आपोमूर्तिः शनीवरः। सोमश्च पञ्चमस्तेषामासीत् स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे। यामेऽतीते सहातीताः पञ्चात्रेयाः प्रकीर्तिताः ।। २८.
Satyanetra, Havya, Āpomūrti, Śanīvara, and Soma were the five among them during the interval of Svāyambhuva; when that period passed, the five Ātreyas were proclaimed.
तेषां पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च ह्यत्रिणा वै महात्मना। स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे यामे शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।। २८.
Their sons and grandsons, through the great-souled Atri, during the interval of Svāyambhuva, numbered in the hundreds and thousands.
प्रीत्यां पुलस्त्यभार्यायां दत्तालिस्तत्सूतोऽभवत्। पूर्वजन्मनि सोऽगस्त्यः स्मृतः स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे। मध्यमो देवबाहुश्च विनीतो नाम ते त्रयः ।। २८.
From Prīti, the wife of Pulastya, Dattāli was born as his son; in a previous birth, he was known as Agastya during the interval of Svāyambhuva; the three are Madhyama, Devabāhu, and Vinīta by name.
स्वसा यवीयसी तेषां सद्वती नाम विश्रुता। पर्जन्यजननी शुभ्रा पत्नी त्वग्नेः स्मृता शुभा पौलस्त्यस्य ऋषेश्चापि प्रीतिपुत्रस्य धीमतः। दत्तालेः सुषुवे पत्नी सुजङ्घादीन् बहून् सुतान्। पौलस्त्या इति विख्याताः स्मृताः स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे ।। २८.
Their youngest sister, famed as Sadvatī, was the radiant mother of Parjanya, remembered as the auspicious wife of Agni; and also the wife of the sage Paulastya, the wise son of Prīti; Dattāli's wife bore many sons, including Sujaṅgha and others, who are known as Paulastyas and remembered in the interval of Svāyambhuva.
क्षमा तु सुषुवे पुत्रान् पुलहस्य प्रजापतेः। ते नाग्निवर्चसः सर्वे येषां कीर्तिः प्रतिष्ठिता ।। २८.
Kṣamā gave birth to sons for Pulaha, the progenitor; all of them possessed the radiance of Agni, and their fame is firmly established.
कर्दमश्चाम्बरीषश्च सहिष्णुश्चेति ते त्रयः । ऋषिर्धनकपीवांश्च शुभा कन्या च पीवरी ।। २८.
Kardama, Āmbarīṣa, and Sahiṣṇu—these three; the sage Dhanakapīvāṃś, and the auspicious daughter Pīvarī.
कर्दमस्य श्रुतिः पत्नी आत्रेय्य जनयत्सुतान्। पुत्रं शङ्खपदञ्चैव कन्यां काम्यां तथैव च ।। २८.
Śruti, the wife of Kardama, gave birth to sons for Ātreyya: the son Śaṅkhapada, and also the daughter Kāmyā.
स वै शह्खपदः श्रीमान् लोकपालः प्रजापतिः। दक्षिणस्यां दिशि रतः साम्यां दत्त्वा प्रियव्रते ।। २८.
Śaṅkhapada, glorious, became a guardian of the worlds and a progenitor, established in the southern direction, having given the western to Priyavrata.
काम्या प्रियव्रताल्लेभे स्वायम्भुवसमान् सुतान्। दशकन्याद्वयञ्चैव यैः क्षत्रं सम्प्रवर्तितम् ।। २८.
Kāmyā obtained sons from Priyavrata, equal to Svāyambhuva; ten daughters and two sons, by whom the kṣatriya order was established.
पुत्रो धनकपीवांश्च सहिष्णुर्नाम विश्रुतः। यशोधारी विजज्ञे वै कामदेवः सुमध्यमः ।। २८.
The son Dhanakapīvāṃś, renowned as Sahiṣṇu, was born; Yaśodhārī gave birth to Kāma, the beautiful and moderate one.
