Then, for the common meaning of the letters, the self-born, in the form of 'a', is established at the beginning as the first sound.
Then, from those sounds, fourteen great-faced ones are born; the divine Manus arise in the Manvantaras, and the sounds are divine.
The one with fourteen faces, whose first sound is 'a', is known as Brahma; the age of Brahma is declared, and he is the progenitor of all colors (races).
From his first face, the Manu called Svāyambhuva is remembered; the sound 'a' should be understood as white in color, and self-born.

The sound 'ī' is to be known as the Manu, red in color and powerful; from him the kṣatriya class arose, therefore the kṣatriya is red.
From his fourth face, the sound 'u' is called a vowel; by color he is remembered as coppery, and that Manu is called Tāmasa.
From his fifth face, the sound 'ū' is produced; by color he is yellow, and the Manu is called Cariṣṇu.
Then from his sixth face, the sound 'oṃ' is remembered as tawny; the sixth Manu, called Vijaya, is the most excellent and greatly austere.
From his seventh face, then, comes the Manu called Vaivasvata; the sound 'ṛ' is the vowel there, and by color he is called dark.
From his eighth face, the sound 'ṝ' is of dark complexion; the letter and color are dark, and from him the Manu called Sāvarṇi is named.
From his ninth face, the sound 'ḷ' is remembered as the ninth; by color he is smoky, and the Manu is called Dhūmra.
From his tenth face, the sound 'ḹ' is called the lord; he is equal and of the same color, and the Manu called Sāvarṇika shone.

Thus, these Manus and vowels and colors in each age should be understood truly, both by their sound and by their color.
Because the vowels are mutually of the same color, therefore their succession is declared due to their sameness of color.
Because those born in this cycle are of the same class and similar, therefore, in this world, all unions among beings are of the same class.
As colors will arise according to law and meaning, and as unions occur through repetition, thus vowels should be understood.
In this cycle, you have spoken of the manifestation of the great soul, Mahadeva Rudra, together with accomplished sages.
I have briefly described the origin of the first creation; now I will explain it in detail, along with the names and bodies.
Mahadeva begot many sons from his wives; listen to which cycle, the eighth, had passed when this occurred.
At the beginning of the cycle, the Lord, contemplating a son equal to himself, manifested a boy from his own body, blue and red; he placed him, fierce and resonant, as if burning with his radiance.
Seeing the blue-red boy suddenly crying, Brahma addressed him, 'Why do you cry, child?'

'You are Bhava by name, O god,' Brahma said; yet he cried again. Brahma then addressed Shankara, 'Why do you cry?'
