Then those two demons spoke harsh words to Brahmā: 'Be the judge between us as we fight.'
Then, entering the water and restraining it by their own illusion, they engaged in a tumultuous battle, each striving for victory.
Though they fought for a divine hundred years, in their contest neither gained the upper hand nor withdrew from the fight.
Having forms and gestures identical in every mark, Brahmā, his mind confused by their resemblance, entered into meditation.
Perceiving the difference between them with his divine sight, Brahmā fashioned a subtle armor from the pollen of the lotus and girded their bodies with a belt, then recited a mantra.
As he chanted, a maiden arose, manifesting all forms, her face like the lotus and the moon, holding a lotus, auspicious and virtuous; seeing her, the two demons, struck with fear, lost their color.
Then Brahmā addressed that maiden with sweet words: 'Who are you here? You must be known. Speak truly, O blameless one.'
With gentle words, that maiden, hands joined in reverence, honored Brahmā and said: 'Know me as Mohinī, the enchantress, the messenger of Viṣṇu's power.'
'Summoned by you, O Brahmā, I have come swiftly; pleased with her, Brahmā gave her a secondary name.'
'Because I was invoked by you and have appeared, you shall be known by the name Mahāvyāhṛti.'
And as her head arose, piercing through, she was called Sāvitrī by him; and because you are not of a single part, you shall become of many parts.
These secondary and other names, arising from deeds, shall become yours by my favor, O auspicious-faced one.
Then, as the two were being tormented, they sought a boon: 'Let our death not be hidden, and may you become our son.'
Saying 'so be it,' he quickly led them to the abode of Yama; Viṣṇu took away Kaiṭabha, and Jishnu likewise took away Madhu.
Thus those two Daityas were slain by Viṣṇu together with Jishnu, with Brahmā also pleased, desiring the welfare of the worlds.
Hear how, by the Lord, sonship was given as his own self; so too, by Viṣṇu together with Jishnu, to Madhu and Kaiṭabha. When the battle had ended, Brahmā spoke to Viṣṇu.
Now a hundred years have been completed; the appointed time has arrived. I shall go to my own place, after this brief and terrible dissolution.
Then, at his word, the god performed the destruction: making the earth devoid of the immovable, and returning the moving beings to their original state.
If it is well with you, Govinda, the lord of the waters has been cast down; tell me, O increaser of Lakṣmī, what should be done by me for you.
Certainly, golden-hued one, lotus-born, listen to my words: the favor you obtained from the Lord, out of desire for a son—
Having thus made it fruitful, you have become free of debt to me; now create or send forth the four kinds of beings.
Having received the instruction from Govinda, the lotus-born grandfather, intent on creating creatures, performed a great and intense austerity.
But for him, though he was practicing austerity, nothing came about; then, after a long time, from suffering, anger increased.
From his eyes, filled with anger, fell drops of tears; from those drops arose beings composed of wind, bile, and phlegm.
Greatly fortunate, of great strength, adorned with auspicious marks, with disheveled hair—those serpents, highly venomous, appeared.
Seeing those foremost serpents, Brahmā reproached himself: 'Alas, shame on my austerity, if such is its fruit! My first offspring is born as a destroyer of the worlds.'
A severe swoon arose in him, born of anger and resentment; overwhelmed by that faintness, the lord of creatures then gave up his life.
From the body of that one of incomparable might, with great compassion, eleven Rudras arose, as he wept; because of that weeping, they are called Rudras, and thus their Rudra-nature.
Those who are Rudras are indeed the vital energies; those vital energies are of that very nature. The vital energies of living beings should be understood as present in all creatures.
For the exceedingly fierce, great, and virtuous being, the wielder of the trident, blue and red in hue, gave his vital energies repeatedly, from the forehead of the lotus-born, the lord of eleven forms.
