Vayu Purana

चलते क्रीडते चैव लम्बोदरशरीरिणे। नमः कृताय कम्पाय मुण्डाय विकराय च ।। २४.

He who moves, who plays, whose body is pot-bellied—salutations to the accomplished one, to the trembling one, to the shaven-headed, to the deformed.

नम उन्मत्तवेषाय किङ्किणीकाय वै नमः। नमो विकृतवेषाय क्रूरोग्रामर्षणाय च ।। २४.

Salutations to the one with a mad appearance, to the one adorned with tinkling bells; salutations to the one with a distorted form, to the fierce and terrifying.

अप्रमेयाय दीप्ताय दीप्तये निर्गुणाय च। नमः प्रियाय वादाय मुद्रामणिधराय च ।। २४.

To the immeasurable, the radiant, the source of radiance, the one beyond qualities—salutations; to the beloved, to the speaker, to the bearer of gesture and jewel—salutations.

नमस्तोकाय तनवे गुणैरप्रतिमाय च। नमो गणाय गुह्याय अगम्यागमनाय च ।। २४.

Salutations to the young, to the slender, to the one unequalled in virtues; salutations to the host, to the secret, to the one who comes and goes where none may go.

लोक धात्री त्वियं भूमिः पादौ सज्जनसेवितौ। सर्व्वेषां सिद्धयोगानामधिष्ठानन्तवोदरम् ।। २४.

You are the earth, the supporter of worlds; your feet are served by the virtuous; you are the foundation and the endless expanse for all accomplished yogins.

मध्येऽन्तरिक्षं विस्तीर्णन्तारागणविभूषितम्। तारापथ इवा भाति श्रीमान् हारस्तवोरसि ।। २४.

In the middle, the vast sky stretches out, adorned with hosts of stars; it shines like a path of stars, like a splendid necklace upon your chest.

दिशो दश भुजास्ते वै केयूराङ्गदभूषिताः। विस्तीर्णपरिणाहश्च नीलाम्बुदचयोपमः ।। २४.

Your ten arms are the directions, adorned with armlets and bracelets; their vast girth is like a mass of dark clouds.

कण्ठस्ते शोभते श्रीमान् हेमसूत्रविभूषितः । दंष्ट्राकरालदुर्द्धर्षमनौपम्यं मुखं तव ।। २४.

Your neck shines, splendid, adorned with a golden thread; your face, with protruding fangs, is unassailable and incomparable.

पझमालाकृतोष्णीषं शीर्षण्यं शोभते कथम्। दीप्तिः सूर्ये वपुश्चन्द्रे स्थैर्ये भूर्ह्यनिलो बले ।। २४.

How splendid is your head, adorned with a garland of skulls as a crown! Your brilliance is in the sun, your form in the moon, your steadiness in the earth, your strength in the wind.

तैक्ष्ण्यमग्नौ प्रभा चन्द्रे खे शब्दः शैत्यमप्सु च। अक्षरोत्तमनिष्पन्दान् गुणानेतान्विदुर्बुधाः ।। २४.

Sharpness in fire, radiance in the moon, sound in the sky, coolness in water—wise ones know these qualities as the highest, unmoving, imperishable.

जपो जप्यो महायोगी महादेवो महेश्वरः। पुरेशयो गुहावासी खेचरो रजनीचरः ।। २४.

He is the recitation, the object of recitation, the great yogi, the great god, the supreme lord; lord of the city, dweller in the cave, mover in the sky, wanderer of the night.

तपोनिधिर्गुहगुरुर्नन्दनो नन्दिवर्द्धनः। हयशीर्षो धराधाता विधाता भूतिवाहनः ।। २४.

The storehouse of austerity, the secret teacher, the delight-bringer, the increaser of joy; horse-headed, supporter of the earth, creator, bearer of prosperity.

बोद्धव्यो बोधनो नेता धूर्वहो दुष्प्रकम्पकः। बृहद्रथो भीमकर्मा बृहत्कीर्तिर्धनञ्जयः ।। २४.

To be known, the awakener, the leader, the upholder of the pole, unshakable; of great chariot, of terrible deeds, of great fame, conqueror of wealth.

घण्टाप्रियो ध्वजीछत्री पताकाध्वजिनीपतिः। कवची पट्टिशी शङ्खी पाशहस्तः परश्वभृत् ।। २४.

Fond of bells, bearing a banner and parasol, lord of armies with banners and standards; armored, bearing a spear, conch-holder, holding a noose, wielding an axe.

अगमस्त्वनघः शूरो देवराजारिमर्दनः। त्वां प्रसाद्य पुराऽस्माभिर्द्विषन्तो निहता युधि ।। २४.

You are inaccessible, sinless, heroic, crusher of the enemies of the king of gods; having pleased you in former times, our enemies were slain by us in battle.

अग्निस्त्वं चार्णवान् सर्वान् पिभन्नैव न तृप्यसे। क्रोधागारः प्रसन्नात्मा कामहा कामदः प्रियः ।। २४.

You are fire, and though you drink up all the oceans, you are never satisfied; you are the abode of anger, yet your nature is serene; you are the destroyer of desire, the giver of desires, and beloved.

ब्रह्मण्यो ब्रह्मचारी च गोघ्नस्त्वं शिष्टपूजितः। वेदानामव्ययः कोशस्त्वया यज्ञः प्रकल्पितः ।। २४.

You are devoted to Brahman and a celibate; though you slay cattle, you are honored by the virtuous; you are the imperishable treasury of the Vedas, and by you the sacrifice is established.

हव्यञ्च वेदं वहति वेदोक्तं हव्यवाहनः। प्रीते त्वयि महादेव वयं प्रीता भवामहे ।। २४.

You carry the oblation and the Veda, as prescribed in the Vedas, O carrier of offerings; when you are pleased, O great god, we too become pleased.

भवानीशो नादिमान् धामराशिर्ब्रह्मम लोकानान्त्वं कर्त्ता त्वादिसर्गः। साङ्ख्याः प्रकृतिभ्यः परमं त्वां विदित्वा क्षीणध्यानास्ते न मृत्युं विशन्ति ।। २४.

You are the Lord of Bhavānī, the beginningless one, the mass of radiance, the Brahman, the creator of worlds; those who know you as the supreme beyond the principles, their meditation exhausted, do not enter death.

योगेन त्वान्ध्यानिनो नित्ययुक्ताः ज्ञात्वा भोगान् सन्त्यजन्ते पुनस्तान् । येऽन्ये मर्त्त्यास्त्वां प्रपन्ना विशुद्धास्ते कर्मभिर्दिव्यभोगान् भजन्ते ।। २४.

Those who are ever engaged in meditation know you through yoga and renounce enjoyments again and again; other mortals who take refuge in you, purified by their actions, partake in divine enjoyments.

अप्रमेयस्य तत्त्वस्य यथा विझः स्वशक्तितः। कीर्तितं तव माहात्म्यमपारं परमात्मनः। शिवो नो भव सर्वत्र योऽसि सोऽसि नमोऽस्तु ते ।। २४.

As far as it is possible for one’s own power to grasp the truth of the immeasurable reality, so has your boundless greatness, O supreme self, been praised; may you, who are Shiva everywhere, be gracious to us—salutations to you.

संपिबन्निव तौ दृष्ट्वा मधुपिङ्गायतेक्षणः । प्रहृष्टवदनोऽत्यर्थमभवच्च स्वकीर्त्तनात् ।। २५.

Seeing those two, whose eyes were tinged like honey and copper, he became exceedingly joyful, as if drinking them in, and was delighted by their praise.

उमापतिर्विरूपाक्षो दक्षयज्ञविनाशनः। पिनाकी खण्डपरशुर्भूतप्रान्तस्त्रिलोचनः ।। २५.

The consort of Umā, the three-eyed one, destroyer of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, bearer of the bow Pināka, wielder of the broken axe, lord of spirits, stood there.

ततः स भगवान् देवः श्रुत्वा वाक्यामृतं तयोः। जानन्नपि महाभागः प्रीतपूर्वमथाब्रवीत् ।। २५.

Then that blessed god, having heard their nectar-like words, though already knowing, spoke with great affection.

कौ भवन्तौ महात्मानौ परस्परहितैषिणौ। समेतावम्बुजाभाक्षौ तस्मिन् घोरे जलप्लवे ।। २५.

Who are you two great souls, lotus-eyed and intent on each other’s welfare, who have come together in this dreadful flood of waters?

तावूचतूर्महात्मानौ सन्निरीक्ष्य परस्परम्। भगवन् किञ्च तथ्येन विज्ञातेन त्वया विभो। कुत्र वा सुखमानन्त्यमिच्छाचारमृते त्वया ।। २५.

Those two great souls, having looked at each other, replied: ‘O Lord, whatever is truly known by you, O mighty one, where is there happiness or endlessness apart from your will?’

उवाच भगवान् देवो मधुरश्लक्ष्णया गिरा। भो भो हिरण्यगर्भ त्वां त्वां च कृष्ण वदाम्यहम् ।। २५.

The blessed god spoke with sweet and gentle words: ‘O Hiraṇyagarbha, O Kṛṣṇa, I address you both.’

प्रीतोऽहमनया भक्त्या शाश्वताक्षरयुक्तया। भवन्तौ माननीयौ वै मम ह्यर्हतरावुभौ। युवाभ्यां किं ददाम्यद्य वराणां वरमुत्तमम् ।। २५.

I am pleased by this devotion, joined with the eternal and imperishable; you both are truly worthy of honor from me. What supreme boon shall I grant you today?

तेनैवमुक्ते वचने ब्रह्माणं विष्णुरब्रवीत् । ब्रूहि ब्रूहि महाभाग वरो यस्ते विवक्षितः ।। २५.

When these words were spoken, Viṣṇu said to Brahmā: ‘Speak, speak, O greatly fortunate one, what boon do you desire?’
