सत्यसन्धाः पराक्रान्ताः क्रूरा मायाविनश्च ते । महाबला अयज्वानो ह्यब्रह्मण्याश्च दानवाः । कीर्त्त्यमानान्मया सर्वान् प्राधान्येन निबोधत ।। ७.
The Dānavas were true to their word, valiant, fierce, and masters of illusion; mighty in strength, they performed no sacrifices and were not devoted to the Brāhmaṇas. Now, listen as I recount all their chief names in order.
द्विमूर्द्धा शङ्कुवर्णश्च तथा शङ्कुनिरामयः। शङ्कुकर्णो महाविश्वो गवेष्ठिर्दुन्दुभिस्तथा ।। ७.
Dvimūrdhā, Śaṅkuvarṇa, Śaṅkunirāmaya, Śaṅkukarṇa, Mahāviśva, Gaveṣṭhi, and Dundubhi—these are among them.
अजामुखोऽथ भगवान् शिलो वामनसस्तथा। मरीचिरक्षकश्चैव महागार्ग्योऽङ्गिरावृतः ।। ७.
Ajāmukha, the venerable Śila, Vāmanasa, Marīcirakṣaka, Mahāgārgya, and Aṅgirāvṛta are also named.
विक्षोभ्यश्च सुकेतुश्च सुवीर्यः सुहृदस्तथा। इन्द्रजिद्विश्वजिच्चैव तथासुर विमर्द्दनः ।। ७.
Vikṣobhya, Suketu, Suvīrya, Suhṛda, Indrajit, Viśvajit, Asura, and Vimardana are included as well.
एकचक्रः सुबाहुश्च तारकश्च महाबलः। वैश्वानरः पुलोमा च प्रवीणोऽथ महाशिराः ।। ७.
Ekacakra, Subāhu, Tāraka the mighty, Vaiśvānara, Pulomā, Pravīṇa, and Mahāśirā are also among them.
स्वर्भानुर्वृषपर्वा च मुण्डकश्च महासुरः। धृतराष्ट्रश्च सूर्यश्च चन्द्र इन्द्रश्च तापिनः ।। ७.
Svarbhānu, Vṛṣaparvan, Muṇḍaka the great Asura, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Sūrya, Candra, and Indra, the tormentors, are named.
सूक्ष्मश्चैव निचन्द्रश्च ऊर्णनाभो महागिरिः। असिलोमा सुकेशश्च सदश्च बलको दश ।। ७.
Sūkṣma, Nicandra, Ūrṇanābha, Mahāgiri, Asilomā, Sukeśa, Sada, and ten named Balaka.
तथा गगनमूर्द्धा च कुम्भनाभा महोदरः। प्रमोदाहश्च कुपथो हयग्रीवश्च वीर्यवान् ।। ७.
Gaganamūrdhā, Kumbhanābha, Mahodara, Pramodāha, Kupatha, and the mighty Hayagrīva are also included.
असुरश्च विरुपाक्षः सुपथोऽथ महासुरः। अजो हिरण्मयश्चैव शतमायुश्च शम्बरः ।। ७.
Asura, Virupākṣa, Supatha the great Asura, Aja, Hiraṇmaya, Śatamāyu, and Śambara are named.
शरभः शलभश्चैव सूर्याचन्द्रमसावुभौ। असुराणां सुरावेतौ सुराणां साम्प्रताविमौ ।। ७.
Śarabha, Śalabha, Sūrya and Candra—these two—are both renowned among the Asuras as adversaries of the gods, and now stand among the gods themselves.
इति पुत्रा दनोर्वंशाः प्रधानाः परिकीर्तिताः। तेषामपरिसङ्ख्येयं पुत्रपौत्राद्यनन्तकम् ।। ७.
Thus, the chief sons of Danu’s lineage have been named; their descendants—sons, grandsons, and so on—are countless and without end.
इत्येते त्वसुराः प्रोक्ता दैतेया दानवाश्च ये। स्वर्भानुस्तु स्मृतो दैत्यो ह्यनुभानुर्दनोः सुतः। इमे तु वंशानुगता दनोः पुत्रास्तु ये स्मृताः ।। ७.
Thus have the Asuras been described, those called Daiteyas and Dānavas. Svarbhānu is known as a Daitya, and Anubhānu is a son of Danu. These are the sons of Danu, remembered as belonging to her lineage.
एकाक्ष ऋषभोऽरिष्टः प्रबन्धनरकावपि। इन्द्रबाधनकेशी च मेरुः शम्बोऽथ धेनुकः ।। ७.
Ekākṣa, Ṛṣabha, Ariṣṭa, Prabandhana, Naraka, Indrabādhana, Keśī, Meru, Śambhu, and Dhenuka are also named.
गवेष्ठिश्च गवाक्षश्च तालकेतुश्च वीर्यवान्। एते मनुष्यधर्मास्तु दनोः पुत्रा मया स्मृताः ।। ७.
Gaveṣṭhi, Gavākṣa, Tālaketu the mighty—these are remembered by me as sons of Danu who possessed human qualities.
दैत्यदानवसंहर्षे जाता भीमपराक्रमाः। सिंहिकायामथोत्पन्ना विप्रचित्तिसुतास्त्विमे ।। ७.
Born in the rivalry between Daityas and Dānavas, these sons of Siṃhikā and the sons of Vipracitti were of terrible prowess.
सैंहिकेया इति ख्याताश्चतुर्द्दश महासुराः। शतगालश्च बलवान्न्यासः शाम्बस्तथैव च । ७.
These fourteen great Asuras, known as the Saiṃhikeyas, include Śatagāla the powerful, Nyāsa, and Śāmba as well.
अनुलोमः शुचिश्चैव वातापिश्च सितांशुकः। हरः कल्पः कालनाभो भौमश्च नरकस्तथा ।। ७.
Anuloma, Śuci, Vātāpi, Sitāṃśuka, Hara, Kalpa, Kālanābha, Bhauma, and Naraka are also among them.
राहुर्ज्यष्ठस्तु तेषां वै चन्द्रसूर्यप्रमर्दनः। इत्येते सिंहिकापुत्रा देवैरपि दुरासदाः ।। ७.
Among them, Rāhu is the eldest, the afflicter of the moon and sun; these sons of Siṃhikā are formidable even for the gods.
दारुणाभिजनाः क्रूराः सर्वे ब्रह्मद्विषश्च ते। दशान्यानि सहस्राणि सैंहिकेयो गणः स्मृतः ।। ७.
All those born of cruel lineage, fierce and haters of Brahman, are known as the ten thousand strong host of Saiṃhikeyas.
निहतो जामदग्न्येन भार्गवेण बलीयसा। स्वर्भानोस्तु प्रभा कन्या पुलोम्नोऽथ शची तथा ।। ७.
Slain by the powerful Bhārgava, son of Jamadagni, were they; and Svarbhānu's daughter was Prabhā, as also Puloman's daughter Śacī.
उपदानवी यमस्यापि शर्मिष्ठा वार्ष पर्वणी। पुलोमा कालिका चैव वैश्वानरसुते उभे ।। ७.
Upadānavī was Yama's wife, Śarmiṣṭhā was Vṛṣaparvan's daughter; Pulomā and Kālikā were both daughters of Vaiśvānara.
प्रभाया नहुषः पुत्रो जयन्तश्च शचीसुतः। पुरुंजज्ञेऽथ शर्मिष्ठा दुष्मन्तमुपदानवी ।। ७.
From Prabhā was born Nahuṣa's son, and from Śacī, Jayanta; then Śarmiṣṭhā bore Puru, and Upadānavī bore Duṣmanta.
वैश्वानरसुते ह्येते पुलोमा कालिका उभे । उभे ह्यपि तु ते कन्ये मारीचस्य परिग्रहे । ७.
Pulomā and Kālikā, both daughters of Vaiśvānara, became wives of Mārīca.
ताभ्यां पुत्रसहस्राणि षष्टिर्दानवपुङ्गवाः। चतुर्दश तथान्यानि हिरण्यपुरवासिनाम् ।। ७.
From them were born sixty thousand eminent Dānavas, and fourteen thousand others who dwelled in Hiraṇyapura.
पौलोमाः कालकेयाश्च दानवाः सुमहाबलाः। अवध्या दानवानां ते निहताः सव्यसाचिना ।। ७.
The Paulomas and Kālakeyas, Dānavas of immense might, were invulnerable among Dānavas, yet were slain by Savyasācin.
मयस्य जाता ये पुत्राः सर्वे वीरपराक्रमाः। मायावी दुन्दुभिश्चैव वृषश्च महिषस्तथा ।। ७.
All the sons born to Maya were heroes of great valor: Māyāvī, Dundubhi, Vṛṣa, and also Mahiṣa.
बालिको वज्रकर्णश्च कन्या मन्दोदरी तथा। दैत्यानां दानवानाञ्च सर्ग एष प्रकीर्त्तितः ।। ७.
Bālika, Vajrakarṇa, and the daughter Mandodarī; thus is recounted the creation of the Daityas and Dānavas.
दनायुषायाः पुत्रास्तु स्मृताः पञ्च महाबलाः। अरूरुर्बालिजम्भौ च विरक्षश्च विषस्तथा ।। ७.
The sons of Danāyuṣā are remembered as five mighty ones: Arūru, Bāli, Jambha, Virakṣa, and Viṣa.
अरुरो स्तनयः क्रूरो धुन्धुर्नाम महासुरः। निहतः कुवलाश्वेन उत्तङ्कवचनात् किल ।। ७.
Arūru's son was Stanaya, a fierce and great Asura named Dhundhu, who was slain by Kuvalāśva at the word of Uttaṅka.
बलेः पुत्रौ महावीर्यौ तेजसाप्रतिमावुभौ। कुम्भिलश्चक्रवर्मा च स कर्णः पूर्वजन्मनि ।। ७.
Bali had two sons of great might and unequalled brilliance: Kumbhila and Cakravarman; he was Karṇa in a former birth.
