६२.७० सूत उवाच॥ चाक्षुषस्य निसर्गन्तु समासाच्छ्रोतुमर्हथ । तस्यान्ववाये सम्भूतः पृथुर्वैन्यः प्रतापवान्
Sūta said: You should hear briefly of the creation of Cākṣuṣa; in his lineage, Pṛthu, son of Vena, was born, renowned for his prowess.
प्रजानां पतयश्चान्ये दक्षः प्राचेतसस्तथा । उत्तानपादं जग्राह पुत्रमत्रिः प्रजापतिः
Other lords of creatures were Dakṣa and Prācetasa; Atri, the lord of creatures, accepted Uttānapāda as his son.
दक्षकस्य तु पुत्रोऽस्य राजा ह्यासीत् प्रजापतेः । स्वायम्भुवेन मनुना दत्तोऽत्रेः कारणं प्रति
Daksha's son became king, indeed, of the progeny of Prajapati; by Svayambhu Manu, he was given to Atri for a certain purpose.
मन्वन्तरमथासाद्य भविष्यं चाक्षुषस्य ह । षष्ठं तदनुवक्ष्यामि उपोद्घातेन वै द्विजाः
When the future Manvantara of Cākṣuṣa arrives, I will recount the sixth in detail, O twice-born, with an introduction.
उत्तानपादाच्चतुरा सूनृता वित्तभाविनी । उत्पन्ना चाधिधर्मेण ध्रुवस्य जननी शुभा । धर्मस्य पत्न्यां लक्ष्म्यां वै उत्पन्ना सा शुचिस्मिता
From Uttānapāda four daughters were born: Sūnṛtā, Vittabhāvinī, and also Adhidharma, the auspicious mother of Dhruva; from Lakṣmī, wife of Dharma, was born Śucismitā, radiant with purity.
ध्रुवञ्च कीर्त्तिमन्तञ्च अयस्मन्तं वसुं तथा । उत्तानपादोऽजनयत् कन्ये द्वे च शुचिस्मिते । मनस्विनीं स्वराञ्चैव त्रयोः पुत्राः प्रकीर्त्तिताः
Uttānapāda begot Dhruva, Kīrttimanta, Ayasmanta, and Vasu, as well as two daughters, Śucismitā and Manasvinī; Svarā was also born, thus three sons are mentioned.
ध्रुवो वर्षसहस्राणि दश दिव्यानि वीर्यवान् । तपस्तेपे निराहारः प्रार्थयन् विपुलं यशः
Dhruva, powerful, practiced austerity for ten divine years without food, desiring great fame.
त्रेतायुगे तु प्रथमे पौत्रः स्वायम्भुवस्य सः । आत्मानं धारयन् योगात् प्रार्थयन् सुमहद्यशः
In the first Treta Yuga, the grandson of Svāyambhuva, sustaining himself through yoga, sought exceedingly great renown.
तस्मै ब्रह्मा ददौ प्रीतो ज्योतिषां स्थानमुत्तमम् । आभूतसंप्लवं हृद्यमस्तोदयविवर्जितम्
To him, Brahmā, pleased, granted the highest place among the stars, free from the rising and setting, delightful and beyond dissolution.
तस्यातिमात्रामृद्धिं च महिमानं निरीक्ष्य ह । दैत्यासुराणामाचार्यः श्लोकमप्युशना जगौ॥२.१.
Beholding his extraordinary prosperity and greatness, the teacher of the Daityas and Asuras, Uśanas, sang a verse.
६२.८० अहो स्य तपसो वीर्यमहो श्रुतमहो हुतम्। स्थिताः सप्तर्षयः कृत्वा यदेनमुपरि ध्रुवम् । ध्रुवे दिवं समासक्तमीश्वरः स दिवस्पतिः
Ah, the power of his austerity! Ah, his learning! Ah, his offerings! The seven sages, having made him steadfast above, established Dhruva in heaven, and the Lord became the master of the sky.
ध्रुवात्पुष्टिञ्च भव्यञ्च भूमिः सा सुषुवे नृपौ । स्वां छायामाह वै पुष्टिर्भव नारी तु तां विभुः
From Dhruva, Puṣṭi and Bhavya were born; the earth produced them, O king. Puṣṭi declared, 'Become my shadow,' and Bhava, the lord, made her his wife.
सत्याभिव्याहृते तस्य सद्यः स्त्री साभवत्तदा । दिव्यसंहन नाच्छाया दिव्याभरणभूषिता
When truth was spoken by him, that woman immediately appeared, with a divine form and shadow, adorned with celestial ornaments.
छायायां पुष्टिराधत्त पञ्च पुत्रानकल्मषान् । प्राचीनगर्भं वृषकं वृकञ्च वृकलं धृतिम्
In Chāyā, Puṣṭi bore five faultless sons: Prācīnagarbha, Vṛṣaka, Vṛka, Vṛkala, and Dhṛti.
पत्नी प्राचीनगर्भस्य भूवर्चा सुषुवे नृपम् । नाम्नोदारधियं पुत्रमिन्द्रो यः पूर्वजन्मनि
Bhūvarcā, wife of Prācīnagarbha, gave birth to a king, Udāradhiya by name, who was Indra in a previous birth.
संवत्सरसहस्रान्ते सकृदाहारमाहरत् । एवं मन्वन्तरं युक्तमिन्द्रत्वं प्राप्तवान्विभुः
At the end of a thousand years, he took food only once; thus, having fulfilled the Manvantara, the lord attained the position of Indra.
उदारधेः सुतं भद्राजनयत्सा दिवञ्जयम् । रिपुं रिपुञ्जयं जज्ञे वराङ्गी सा दिवञ्जयात्
Bhadrā gave birth to Divanjaya, son of Udāradhi; Varāṅgī, from Divanjaya, bore Ripu and Ripunjaya.
रिपोराधत्त बृहती चाक्षुषं सर्वतेजसम् । व्यजीजनत् पुष्करिण्यां वारुण्यां चाक्षुणो मनुम् । प्रजापतेरात्मजायामारण्यस्य महात्मनः
Bṛhatī, wife of Ripu, bore Cākṣuṣa, endowed with all brilliance; Puṣkariṇī and Vāruṇī gave birth to Cākṣuṣa Manu, son of Prajāpati and the great soul Araṇya.
मनोरजायन्त दशनद्वलायां शुभाः सुताः । कन्यायां वै महाभाग वैराजस्य प्रजापतेः
To Manu were born auspicious sons in Nadvalā; and to the blessed daughter of Vairāja Prajāpati.
ऊरुः पूरुः शतद्युम्नस्तपस्वी सत्यवाक् कविः । अग्निष्टुदतिरात्रश्च सुद्युम्नश्चेति ते नव । अभिमन्युश्च दशमो नद्वलायां मनोः सुताः ॥२.१.
Ūru, Pūru, Śatadyumna, Tapasvī, Satyavāk, Kavi, Agniṣṭuda, Atirātra, Sudyumna—these nine, and Abhimanyu as the tenth, were sons of Manu by Nadvalā.
६२.९० ऊरोरजनयत् पुत्रान् षडाग्नेयी महाप्रभान् । अङ्गं सुमनसं स्वातिं क्रतुमङ्गिरसं शिवम्
Āgneyī, of great splendor, gave birth to six sons from her thighs: Aṅga, Sumanasa, Svāti, Kratu, Aṅgirasa, and Śiva.
अङ्गात सुनीथापत्यं वै वेनमेकं व्यजायत । अपचारेण वेनस्य प्रकोपः सुमहानभूत्
From Aṅga was born a single son named Sunītha, and then Vena was born; due to Vena's misconduct, great anger arose.
प्रजार्थमृषयस्तस्य ममन्थुर्दक्षिणं करम् । वेनस्य पाणौ मथिते सम्बभूव महान्नृपः । वैन्यो नाम महीपालो यः पृथुः परिकीर्त्तितः
For the sake of the people, the sages churned Vena's right hand; when Vena's hand was churned, a great king emerged, named Vainya, who is renowned as Pṛthu.
स धन्वी कवची जातस्तेजसा प्रज्वलन्निव । पृथुर्वैन्यः सर्वलोकान् ररक्ष क्षत्रपूर्वजः
He was born with a bow and armor, blazing with energy; Pṛthu Vainya, descended from the Kṣatriyas, protected all the worlds.
तस्य स्तवार्थमुत्पन्नौ निपुणौ सूतमागधौ
For the purpose of his praise, the skilled Sūta and Māgadha were produced.
तेनेयं गौर्महाराज्ञा दुग्धा सस्यानि धीमता । प्रजानां वृत्तिकामानां देवैऋषिगणैः सह
By that wise great king, this earth was milked for grains, together with the gods and groups of sages, for the livelihood of the people.
पितृभिर्दानवैश्चैव गन्धर्वैरप्सरोगणैः । सर्वैः पुण्यजनैश्चैव वीरुद्भिः पर्वतैस्तथा
By the ancestors, the Dānavas, Gandharvas, groups of Apsarases, all virtuous beings, plants, and mountains as well.
तेषु तेषु तु पात्रेषु दुह्यमाना वसुन्धरा । प्रादाद्यथेप्सितं क्षीरं तेन लोकांस्त्वधारयत्
In each of those vessels, the earth was milked; she gave the desired milk, and by that, he sustained the worlds.
ऋषय ऊचुः॥ विस्तरेण पृथोर्जन्म कीर्त्तयस्व महा मते । यथा महात्मना दुग्धा पूर्वं तेन वसुन्धरा
The sages said: O great-minded one, narrate in detail the birth of Pṛthu, and how the earth was formerly milked by that great soul.
यथा देवैश्च नागैश्च यथा ब्रह्मर्षिभिः सह । यथा यक्षैः सगन्धर्वैरप्सरोभिर्यथा पुरा ॥२.१.
How it was done by the gods and Nāgas, by the Brahmarṣis together, by the Yakṣas, Gandharvas, Apsarases, and as it was done in ancient times.
