Now listen concerning the Rathantara Sāman, its names at the end of the kalpa, and the origin of its mantras.
The nineteenth kalpa is to be known as Śṛtalohita; therein, the supreme meditation is performed by Brahmā.
A youth arose, radiant like fire, wearing a white turban, white garland, clad in white garments, bearing a crest, endowed with great brilliance.
His face was formidable, exceedingly fierce, terrifying, white and red; his form was blazing, with a vast mouth, shining with white brilliance.
Seeing him, the illustrious Brahmā, the all-faced, beheld the youth, the sustainer of worlds, the universal form, the great lord.
Brahmā, the grandsire of the worlds, reverently saluted the ancient divine person, the soul of all, the lord of yogis, the god of gods.
Placing the great god, the supreme self, the lord, in his heart, Brahmā then contemplated Sadyojāta; knowing him, the delighted lord of the world released a smile.
Then, at his side, appeared white sages, radiant with Brahman, great souls adorned with white garlands and ointments.
Sunanda, Nandaka, Śacava, Viśvananda, and Nandana—these great souls were his disciples, by whom Brahmā was surrounded.
Before him, the great sage named Śveta, shining with white hue, was born, endowed with great brilliance; from him, the man was born.
There, all those sages, seeing Sadyojāta, the great lord, and those twice-born who perceive the lord of the universe, are devoted to prāṇāyāma and steadfast in Brahman.
All of them, freed from sin, pure, radiant with Brahman, transcend the world of Brahmā and attain the world of Brahman.
Next, the thirtieth kalpa is proclaimed as Rakta; there, the youth of great brilliance assumed a red form.
For Brahmā, desiring a son and meditating, a youth of great brilliance appeared, with a red body, wearing red garlands and garments, with red eyes, full of splendor.
Seeing the great god, the youth clad in red, having attained supreme meditation, he understood the lord of the universe.
Brahmā, the revered one, saluted him, and then contemplated Vāmadeva, who is of the nature of Brahman.
Thus, Mahādeva, meditated upon by Brahmā, the supreme lord, with a mind filled with joy, spoke to the grandsire.
Because you, O grandsire, desiring a son, have seen me here with supreme devotion through the yoga of meditation, O noble one.
Therefore, by attaining supreme meditation, O great ascetic, you shall know me, the mighty Lord, the supporter of the worlds, in every age. Having spoken thus, Śarva then let out a loud, roaring laugh.
Then, from that great soul, four boys of great spirit were born; they shone forth, pure in understanding.
Free from passion, unmarried, without sorrow, creators of the universe, devoted to Brahman, equal to Brahman, heroic and resolute.
All were clad in red garments, adorned with red garlands and unguents, their bodies smeared with red ashes, with red mouths and red eyes.
Then, at the end of a thousand years, those devoted to Brahman, steadfast, and great-souled, praised that supreme, divine Brahman.
For the sake of granting favor to the worlds and out of desire for the welfare of their disciples, those Brāhmaṇas themselves taught the entire dharma, and then again entered the great, eternal Rudra.
And other excellent twice-born who worship the left-sided Lord, those devoted to him, who take refuge in Mahādeva,
All of them, freed from sin, pure, and radiant with the splendor of Brahman, will go to the world of Rudra, which is difficult to return from.
The thirty-first kalpa is known as Pītavāsā, in which Brahmā, of great splendor, took on a yellow hue.
As Brahmā, the supreme lord, was meditating with the desire for a son, a radiant boy appeared, clothed in yellow garments.
His limbs were anointed with yellow fragrance, he wore yellow garlands, was youthful, had a yellow sacred thread, a yellow turban, and mighty arms.
Seeing him absorbed in meditation, Brahmā, the lord of the worlds, mentally bowed to the supreme Lord, the supporter of the worlds.
