News destroys the mind, impelled by the inner self; for one whose intellect is overcome by distraction, all knowledge is destroyed.
Covering with the mind a white cloth or a blanket, then one should quickly contemplate the supreme Brahman.
Therefore, the wise should completely abandon the faults and obstacles of the self, if he desires perfection for himself.
Sages, divine gandharvas, yakshas, serpents, and great demons—when joined with obstacles, they revolve again and again.
Therefore, the yogin should always be disciplined, moderate in food, self-controlled; thus, lying down in a very subtle state, he should fix his concentration at the crown of the head.
Then, for the yogin who is united with yoga and has conquered sleep, obstacles called 'prāṇa' arise again at the end.
He should hold the entire earth, then immediately water, then fire, and for all, ether and mind as well.
Then, the ascetic should diligently hold the supreme intellect; seeing again and again the marks of the intellect, he should let them go.
For one holding the earth, a subtle earth arises; for one holding water, subtle waters indeed appear; cool essences arise, subtle and resembling nectar.
For one holding fire, subtle fire arises; he perceives himself as fire and sees that state.
He perceives himself as air, as a circle of wind, O Lord; for one holding ether, subtle space arises.
He sees a subtle circle, and a sound arises for him; he always perceives himself as subtle air arising.
Likewise, for one holding the mind, subtle mind arises; by mind he enters into all beings, and when he unites intellect with intellect, then, knowing, he becomes intelligent.
He who knows these seven subtle elements, being wise and learned in yoga, abandons them and attains the supreme by intellect.
In whatever element one is joined, marked by mastery over elements, there alone he remains attached, and by that he is dissolved.
Therefore, knowing the subtle elements as mutually connected, he who abandons them by intellect, O twice-born, attains the supreme.
Great souls, seers with divine vision, are seen to be attached to subtle states; those are considered faults in them. Therefore, no certainty should ever be made regarding the subtle states here; from mastery arises attachment, and dispassion is said to be Brahman.
Knowing the seven subtle elements and the sixfold form of the great Lord, and understanding the chief principle, one attains the supreme Brahman.
Omniscience, satisfaction, beginningless knowledge, independence, eternal unfailing power, and infinite power—these are said by the knowers of the law to be the six limbs of the great Lord.
He who is always endowed with Brahman, disciplined, is freed from obstacles; for the yogin who has conquered the obstacles of breath and pleasure, there is one concentration outside the body, fulfilling all desires.
When the disciplined twice-born enters wherever he directs his mind, he enters the elements or even shakes the three worlds.
By this, he enters a body, and having left a body, again here; for the yogas, the gateway of the mind and the sun should be indicated.
Because of actions such as taking and the like, he is called Āditya. In this way, the yogī, detached and free from subtle qualities, having transcended nature, is honored in the world of Rudra.
That lord, having attained the qualities of sovereignty and divinity, having become Brahman, withdraws from all the abodes of the gods, everywhere.
With the portion of a piśāca, he attains the piśācas; with the portion of a rākṣasa, the rākṣasas; with the portion of a gandharva, the gandharvas; with the portion of Kubera, those born of Kubera.
He attains Indra by the abode of Indra, Soma by the abode of Soma, and likewise Prajāpati by the abode of Prajāpati.
In the same way, he addresses the lord in the Brāhma abode with the Brāhma portion. Attached there, he becomes intoxicated, and from that, everything proceeds.
Always intent on Brahman, disciplined, he abandons these abodes. Not becoming attached to the abodes, the twice-born becomes all-pervading.
Now, I will explain in detail the qualities of sovereignty, by which, through a special yoga, one transcends all worlds.
There, the eightfold sovereignty of yogīs is described. Listen as I explain all of them in order.
