सशब्दे सभये वापि चैत्यवल्मीकसंचये। उदपाने तथा नद्यान्न बाधातः कदाचन ।। ११.
In a noisy place, or one filled with fear, among heaps of shrines or ant-hills, at a well, or by a river, there should never be practice due to disturbance.
क्षुधाविष्स्तथाऽप्रितो न च व्याकुलचेतनः। युञ्जीत परमं ध्यानं योगी ध्यानपरः सदा ।। ११.
One afflicted by hunger, or poisoned, or with an agitated mind, should not practice supreme meditation; the yogin should always be devoted to meditation.
एतान् दोषान् विनिश्चित्य प्रमादाद्यो युनक्ति वै। तस्य दोषाः प्रकुप्यन्ति शरीरे विघ्नकारकाः ।। ११.
Having considered these faults, if one practices carelessly, those faults become aggravated in his body, causing obstacles.
जडत्वं बधिरत्वं च मूकत्वं चाधिगच्छति। अन्धत्वं स्मृतिलोपश्च जरा रोगस्तथैव च ।। ११.
He attains dullness, deafness, and muteness; blindness, loss of memory, old age, and disease likewise.
तस्य दोषाः प्रकुप्यन्ति अज्ञानाद्यो युनक्ति वै। तस्माज्ज्ञानेन शुद्धेन योगी युञ्जेत्समाहितः ।। ११.
For him, the faults become aggravated if he practices out of ignorance; therefore, the yogin should practice with pure knowledge and concentration.
अप्रमत्तः सदा चैव न दोषान् प्राप्रुयात् व्कचित् । तेषां चिकित्सां वक्ष्यामि दोषाणां च यथाक्रमम्। यथा गच्छन्ति ते दोषाः प्राणायामसमुत्थिताः ।। ११.
One who is always attentive does not incur faults at any time. I will explain the treatment of these faults in order, as the faults arising from breath control occur.
स्निग्धां यवागूमत्युष्णां भुक्त्वां तत्रावधारयेत् । एतेन क्रमयोगेन वातगुल्मं प्रशाम्यति ।। ११.
Having eaten warm, unctuous barley gruel, one should remain there; by this method, the wind swelling is calmed.
गुदावर्त्तप्रतीकारमिदं कुर्य्याच्चिकित्सितम्। भुक्त्वा दधि यवागूर्वा वायुरूर्द्ध्वं ततो व्रजेत ।। ११.
This should be done as a remedy for intestinal obstruction; after eating curd or barley gruel, the wind then moves upward.
वायुग्रंथिं ततो भित्त्वा वायुदेशे प्रयोजयेत् । तथापि न विशेषः स्याद्धारणां मूर्ध्नि धारयेत् ।। ११.
Having pierced the knot of air, one should apply it in the region of air; yet, there is no special result—one should hold the retention at the crown.
युञ्जानस्य तनुं तस्य सत्तवस्थस्यैव देहिनः। गुदावर्त्तप्रतीघाते एतत् कुर्य्याच्चिकित्सितम् ।। ११.
For one practicing, whose body is in a sattvic state, if there is obstruction in the rectal passage, this should be treated accordingly.
सर्वगात्रप्रकम्पेन समारब्धस्य योगिनः । इमां चिकित्सां कुर्व्वीत तया संपद्यते सुखी ।। ११.
When a yogi begins with trembling of all limbs, he should perform this treatment; by it, he attains happiness.
मनसा यद्व्रतं किञ्चिद्विष्टम्भीकृत्य धारयेत्। उरोद्धाते उरःस्थानं कण्ठदेशे च धारयेत् ।। ११.
Whatever vow is undertaken mentally, one should hold it firmly; when the chest is raised, retain it in the chest region and also at the throat.
त्वचोऽवधाते तां वाचि बाधिर्ये श्रोत्रयोस्तथा। जिह्वास्थाने तृषार्त्तस्तु अग्रे स्नेहांश्च तन्तुभिः। फलं वै चिन्तयेद्योगी ततः संपद्यते सुखी ।। ११.
When the skin is raised, retain it in speech; in deafness, retain it in the ears; in thirst at the tongue, apply oil at the tip with threads; the yogi should contemplate the result, and thus attains happiness.
क्षये कुष्ठे सकीलासे धारयेत्सर्वसात्विकीम्। यस्मिन् यस्मिन् रजोदेशे तस्मिन् युक्तो विनिर्द्दिशेत् ।। ११.
In cases of wasting, leprosy, or scaly skin, one should retain all sattvic qualities; in whatever region is affected by rajas, apply the appropriate remedy.
योगोत्पन्नस्य विप्रस्य इदं कुर्याच्चिकित्सितम्। वंशकीलेन मूर्द्धानं धारयाणस्य ताडयेत्। मूर्ध्नि कीलं प्रतिष्ठाप्य काष्ठं काष्ठेन ताडयेत् ।। ११.
For a brahmin who has attained yoga, this treatment should be performed: strike the crown with a bamboo peg while holding it; place the peg on the crown and strike it with wood.
भयभीतस्य सा संज्ञा ततः प्रत्यागमिष्यति। अथ वा लुप्तसंज्ञस्य हस्ताभ्यां तत्र धारयेत् ।। ११.
For one frightened by fear, consciousness will return; or, for one who has lost consciousness, press there with the hands.
प्रतिलभ्य ततः संज्ञां धारणां मूर्ध्नि धारयेत्। स्रिग्धमल्पं च भुञ्जीत ततः संपद्यते सुखी ।। ११.
After regaining consciousness, retain the retention at the crown; eat a little oily food, and thus he attains happiness.
अमानुषेण सत्त्वेन यदा बुध्यति योगवित् । दिवं च पृथिवीञ्चैव वायुमग्निं च धारयेत् ।। ११.
When the knower of yoga awakens with superhuman strength, he should retain the sky, earth, air, and fire.
प्राणायामेन तत्सर्वं दह्यमानं वशीभवेत्। अथापि प्रविशेद्देहं ततस्तं प्रतिषेधयेत् ।। ११.
Through breath control, all that is burning becomes subject to his will; or, if he enters the body, then restrain it.
ततः संस्तभ्य योगेन धारयानस्य मूर्द्धानि। प्राणायामाग्निना दग्धं तत्सर्वं विलयं व्रजेत् ।। ११.
Then, by yoga, holding at the crown, all that is burned by the fire of breath control goes to dissolution.
कृष्णसर्पापराधं तु धारयेद्धृदयोदरे । महर्जनस्तपः सत्यं हृदि कृत्वा तु धारयेत् ।। ११.
One should retain the offense of the black serpent in the cavity of the heart; having placed the worlds of Mahar, Janas, Tapas, and Satya in the heart, retain them there.
विषस्य तु फलं पीत्वा विशल्यां धारयेत्ततः । सर्वतः सनगां पृथ्वीं कृत्वा मनसि धारयेत् ।। ११.
After drinking the fruit of poison, retain the antidote; having made the earth with mountains everywhere, hold it in the mind.
हृदि कृत्वा समुद्रांश्च तथा सर्वाश्च देवताः । सहस्रेण घटानाञ्च युक्तः स्नायीत योगवित् ।। ११.
Having placed the oceans and all the deities in the heart, the knower of yoga, joined with a thousand pots, should bathe.
उदके कण्ठमात्रे तु धारणां मूध्नि धारयेत्। प्रतिस्रोतोविषाविष्टो धारयेत् सर्वगात्रिकीम् ।। ११.
In water up to the throat, retain the retention at the crown; when affected by poison against the current, retain it throughout the whole body.
शीर्णोऽर्कपत्रपुटकैः पिबेद्वल्मीकमृत्तिकाम् । चिकित्सितविधिर्ह्येष विश्रुतो योगनिर्मितः ।। ११.
Having crushed with the coverings of arka leaves, one should drink the earth from an anthill; this is the renowned method of treatment established by yoga.
व्याख्यातस्तु समासेन योगदृष्टेन हेतुना। ब्रुवतो लक्षणं विद्धि विप्रस्य कथयेत् व्कचित् ।। ११.
Thus it has been explained in brief, with the reason seen by yoga; know the characteristics as spoken, and let the brahmin teach them at times.
अथापि कथयेन्मोहात्तद्विज्ञानं प्रलीयते। तस्मात् प्रवृत्तिर्य्योगस्य न वक्तव्या कथञ्चन ।। ११.
Even if one speaks of it out of delusion, that knowledge is lost; therefore, the practice of yoga should never be spoken of in any way.
सत्त्वं तथारोग्यमलोलुपत्वं वर्णप्रभा सुस्वरसौम्यता च। गन्धः शुभो मूत्रपुरीष मल्पं योगप्रवृत्तिः प्रथमा शरीरे ।। ११.
Purity, health, lack of greed, radiant complexion, pleasant voice and gentleness, auspicious fragrance, little urine and feces—these are the first signs of yoga's activity in the body.
आत्मानं पृथिवीञ्चैव ज्वलन्तीं यदि पश्यति। कृत्वान्यं विशते चैव विद्यात् सिद्धिमुपस्थिताम् । ११.
If one sees oneself and the earth as blazing, having performed the practice and entered another state, one should know that perfection has arrived.
अत ऊर्द्ध्वं प्रवक्ष्यामि उपसर्गा यथा तथा । प्रादुर्भवन्ति ये दोषा दृष्टतत्त्वस्य देहिनः ।। १२.
Now I will explain further, as they occur, the obstacles that arise for one who has perceived the truth.
