तस्यैवसप्ततियुगं मन्वन्तरमिहोच्यते । लब्धा तु पुरुषः पत्नीं शतरूपामयोनिजाम् ।। १०.
His period of seventy yugas is here called a manvantara; having obtained Śatarūpā, the man without a mother, as his wife—
तया स रमते सार्द्धं तस्मात्सा रतिरुच्यते। प्रथमः संप्रयोगः स कल्पादौ समवर्त्तत ।। १०.
With her he enjoyed union, and thus it is called pleasure; that first union occurred at the beginning of the kalpa.
विराजमसृजत् ब्रह्मा सोऽभवत् पुरुषो विराट् । सम्राण्मानसरूपात्तु वै राजस्तु मनुः स्मृतः ।। १०.
Brahma created Virāj, and he became the cosmic man, Virāj; from the mind-born form of the sovereign, Manu the king is remembered.
स वैराजः प्रजासर्गः स सर्गे पुरुषो मनुः। वैराजात्पुरुषाद्वीराच्छतरूपा व्यजायत ।। १०.
That creation of beings from Virāj is the man called Manu in creation; from Virāj, from the man, from him, Śatarūpā was born.
प्रियव्रतोत्तानपादौ पुत्रौ पुत्रवतां वरौ । कन्ये द्वे च महाभागे याभ्यां जाताः प्रजास्त्विमाः ।। १०.
Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, two sons, foremost among those with sons; and two illustrious daughters, from whom these beings were born.
देवी नाम्ना तथाकूतिः प्रसूतिश्चैव ते शुभे। स्वायम्भुवः प्रसूतिन्तु दक्षाय व्यसृजत् प्रभुः ।। १०.
The goddess named Ākūti and also Prasūti, both auspicious; Svāyambhuva gave Prasūti to Dakṣa, the lord.
प्राणो दक्षस्तु विज्ञेयः सङ्कल्पो मनुरुच्यते। रुचेः प्रजापतेश्चैव आकूतिं प्रत्यपादयत् ।। १०.
Dakṣa is to be known as the vital breath, and Manu is called resolve; and the mind-born Ruci, the progenitor, accepted Ākūti.
आकूत्यां मिथुनं यज्ञे मानसस्य रुचेः शुभम्। यज्ञश्च दक्षिणा चैव यमकौ सम्बभूवतुः ।। १०.
From Ākūti, in the sacrifice, a pair was born to the mind-born Ruci, auspicious: Yajña and Dakṣiṇā, the twin children, came forth.
यज्ञस्य दक्षिणायाञ्च पुत्रा द्वादश जज्ञिरे। यामा इति समाखयाता देवाः स्वायम्भुवेऽन्तरे ।। १०.
From Yajña and Dakṣiṇā, twelve sons were born; they are called the Yāmas, the gods in the Svāyambhuva Manvantara.
यमस्य पुत्रा यज्ञस्य तस्माद्यामास्तु ते स्मृताः। अजिताश्चैव शूकाश्च गणौ द्वौ ब्रह्मणः स्मृतौ ।। १०.
The sons of Yama, of Yajña, are thus remembered as the Yāmas; and Ajitas and Śukas, two groups, are known as the hosts of Brahma.
यामाः पूर्वं परिक्रान्ता यतः संज्ञा दिवौकसः। स्वायम्भूवसुतायान्तु प्रसूत्यां लोकमातरः ।। १०.
The periods of time that had previously passed, from which the gods derive their reckoning, began with the birth of the daughters of Svāyambhuva, the mothers of the worlds.
तस्यां कन्याश्चतुर्विंशद्दक्षस्त्वजनयत् प्रभुः। सर्वास्ताश्च महाभागाः सर्वाः कमललोचनाः ।। १०.
The mighty Dakṣa begot twenty-four daughters from her; all of them were greatly fortunate and all had lotus-like eyes.
योगपत्न्यश्च ताः सर्वाः सर्वास्ता योगमातरः। श्रद्धा लक्ष्मी धॄतिस्तुष्टिः पुष्टिर्मेधा क्रिया तथा। बुद्धिर्ल्लज्जा वपुः शान्तिः सिद्धिः कीर्त्तिस्त्रयोदशी ।। १०.
All of them became wives in union, and all were mothers of yoga: Śraddhā, Lakṣmī, Dhṛti, Tuṣṭi, Puṣṭi, Medhā, Kriyā, Buddhi, Lajjā, Vapuḥ, Śānti, Siddhi, and Kīrti—these thirteen.
पत्न्यर्थे प्रतिजग्राह धर्मो दाक्षायणीः प्रभुः। द्वाराण्येतानि चैवास्य विहितानि स्वयम्भुवा ।। १०.
For the purpose of wives, Dharma, the lord, accepted the daughters of Dakṣa; and these were the prescribed means for him, established by Svayambhū.
ताभ्यः शिष्टा यवीयस्य एकादश सुलोचनाः। ख्यातिः सत्यथ संभूतिः स्मृतिः प्रीतिः क्षमा तथा ।। १०.
From the remaining, the younger eleven, all with beautiful eyes, were: Khyāti, Satya, Sambhūti, Smṛti, Prīti, and Kṣamā.
सन्नतिशचवानसूया च ऊर्ज्जा स्वाहा स्वधा तथा। तास्ततः प्रत्यपद्यन्त पुनरन्ये महर्षयः ।। १०.
Sannati, Śacī, Anasūyā, Ūrjjā, Svāhā, and Svadhā as well; these were then accepted by other great sages.
रुद्रो भृगुर्मरीचिश्च अङ्गिराः पुलहः क्रतुः । पुलस्त्योऽत्रिर्वसिष्ठश्च पितरोऽग्रिस्तथैव च ।। १०.
Rudra, Bhṛgu, Marīci, Aṅgirā, Pulaha, Kratu, Pulastya, Atri, Vasiṣṭha, the Pitṛs, and Agni likewise.
सतीं भवाय प्रायच्छत् ख्यातिञ्च भृगवे तथा। मरीचये च सम्भूतिं स्मृतिमाङ्गिरसे ददौ ।। १०.
Satī was given to Bhava, Khyāti to Bhṛgu, Sambhūti to Marīci, and Smṛti was given to Aṅgirā.
प्रीतिं चैव पुलस्त्याय क्षमां वै पुलहाय च। क्रतवे सन्नतिं नाम अनसूयान्तथात्रये ।। १०.
Prīti was given to Pulastya, Kṣamā to Pulaha, Sannati to Kratu, and Anasūyā to Atri.
ऊर्ज्जं ददौ वसिष्ठाय स्वाहां वै ह्यग्नये ददौ । स्वधां चैव पितृभ्यस्तु तास्वपत्यानि वक्ष्यते ।। १०.
Ūrjjā was given to Vasiṣṭha, Svāhā was given to Agni, and Svadhā to the Pitṛs; their offspring will be described.
एते सर्वे महाभागाः प्रज्ञाः स्वानुष्ठिताः स्थिताः। मन्वन्तरेषु सर्वेषु यावदाभूतसंप्लवम् ।। १०.
All these greatly fortunate and wise ones, established in their own duties, remained throughout all the Manvantaras until the cosmic dissolution.
श्रद्धा कामं विजज्ञे वै दर्पो लक्ष्मीसुतः स्मृतः। धृत्यास्तु नियमः पुत्रस्तुष्टयाः सन्तोष उच्यते ।। १०.
From Śraddhā was born Kāma; from Lakṣmī, Darpa is known as her son; from Dhṛti, Niyama was the son; from Tuṣṭi, Santoṣa is said to be born.
पुष्ट्या लाभः सुतश्चापि मेधापुत्रः श्रुतस्तथा। क्रियायास्तु नयः प्रोक्तो दण्डः समय एव च ।। १०.
From Puṣṭi, Lābha was the son; from Medhā, Śruta was the son; from Kriyā, Naya is declared, as well as Daṇḍa and Samaya.
बुद्धेर्वौधसुतश्चापि अप्रमादश्च तावुभौ । लज्जाया विनयः पुत्रो व्यवसायो वपुःसुतः ।। १०.
From Buddhi, Udhasuta and Apramāda were both sons; from Lajjā, Vinaya was the son; from Vapuḥ, Vyavasāya was the son.
क्षेमः शान्तिसुतश्चापि सुखं सिद्धेर्व्यजायत। यशः कीर्त्तेः सुतश्चापि इत्येते धर्मसूनवः ।। १०.
From Śānti, Kṣema was the son; from Siddhi, Sukha was born; from Kīrti, Yaśas was the son—these are the sons of Dharma.
कामस्य हर्षः पुत्रो वै देव्या रत्या व्यजायत। इत्येष वै सुखोदर्क्कः सर्गो धर्मस्य कीर्त्तितः ।। १०.
From Kāma, Harṣa was the son, born from the goddess Rati; thus, this creation of Dharma, which brings happiness, has been described.
जज्ञे हिंसा त्वधर्माद्धै निकृतिश्चानृतावुभौ । निकृत्यानृतयोर्जज्ञे भयं नरक एव च ।। १०.
From Adharma was born Hiṃsā, and from Nikṛti and Anṛta, both together, were born; from Nikṛti and Anṛta came Bhaya and Naraka.
माया च वेदना चापि मिथुनद्वयमेतयोः। भयाज्जज्ञेऽथ सा माया मृत्युं भूतापहारिणम् ।। १०.
From these two, Māyā and Vedanā, a pair, were born; from Bhaya, Māyā was born, who brings about death and the taking away of beings.
वेदनायास्ततश्चापि दुःखं जज्ञेऽथ रौरवात् । मृत्ययोर्व्याधिज्वरा शोकाः क्रोधोऽसूया च जज्ञिरे । दुःखान्तरा स्मृता ह्येते सर्वे चाधर्मलक्षणाः ।। १०.
From pain arose suffering, and then from Raurava came further anguish; from death came disease, fever, sorrow, anger, and envy. These are all remembered as forms of suffering, and all are marked by unrighteousness.
तेषां भार्याऽस्ति पुत्रो वा ते सर्वे निधनाः स्मृताः । इत्येष तामसः सर्गो जज्ञे धर्मनियामकः ।। १०.
Among them, a wife or a son may exist, but all are considered mortal. Thus, this creation of darkness was born, governed by the law of dharma.
